STMicroelectronics’ STM32N6 is the microcontroller family behind the NPU-equipped launch: announced on December 10, 2024, it adds the company’s Neural-ART Accelerator for running machine-learning inference on embedded devices. ST says the accelerator reaches up to 600 GOPS, but that is a vendor-reported peak—not a guarantee that a particular model will run at that speed or fit every STM32N6 configuration.
What is the STM32N6?
The STM32N6 is a general-purpose microcontroller series and, at its announcement, the first STM32 product family to include ST’s proprietary Neural-ART Accelerator NPU. Its purpose is to let embedded products perform machine-learning inference locally, rather than relying on a remote server for every task. ST positions the family for cost- and power-conscious consumer and industrial devices.
Although ST announced the series in December 2024, it said the parts had been available to selected customers since October 2023 and were then ready for high-volume offering. That announcement date is not the date the devices first became available to any customer. STMicroelectronics’ announcement describes the launch and its claims.
What does Neural-ART do?
Neural-ART is an on-chip neural processing unit designed to accelerate machine-learning inference. ST describes an accelerator with nearly 300 configurable multiply-accumulate units and a peak performance of up to 600 giga operations per second (GOPS). The figure is ST’s reported maximum; it is not an independent benchmark or a promise of performance for every model, workload, or part number.

ST also said the accelerator delivers 600 times the machine-learning performance of a high-end STM32 MCU at that time. That is the company’s comparison in its 2024 release, not a general comparison with all microcontrollers or an independently verified benchmark.
Workloads ST has in mind
ST identifies computer vision, audio processing, and sound analysis as target applications. In practice, whether an application fits depends on the chosen model, device configuration, software support, and the system’s performance and memory needs. The headline GOPS figure alone does not establish those details.

What else is in the STM32N6?
The NPU is only one part of the platform. ST’s launch release specifies an 800 MHz Arm Cortex-M55 CPU, 4.2 MB of RAM, two 64-bit AXI interfaces, and an image signal processor (ISP). ST reports a score of 3,360 CoreMark for the processor; this is the company’s reported score, not an independent measurement. ST also described the RAM amount as the largest then found on an STM32.
The release says the series includes a device version without the Neural-ART accelerator for applications that need other STM32N6 capabilities but not the advanced AI block. These are family-level launch details: check the datasheet for the exact part number before relying on a specification or assuming a feature is present in a specific device.

How can developers evaluate it?
ST says the STM32N6 is supported by its Edge AI Suite and names TensorFlow Lite, Keras, and ONNX among the model formats that users can bring into the workflow. It also describes a growing model zoo. Support and model coverage can change, so check current toolchain documentation and compatibility for the model and exact device you plan to use.
Choose a development board for the prototype
ST’s hardware catalog lists the STM32N6570-DK, a flagship STM32N6 development board described with a 5-megapixel camera expansion board and STLINK v3, MIPI, USB 2.0, Ethernet, audio, and SD card interfaces. The catalog also lists an STM32N6-based Nucleo board for more affordable prototyping. Compare the boards against the needs of your prototype, including imaging hardware, interfaces, memory and connectivity, and the cost of the overall setup. Is this the same as ST’s Stellar P3E?
No. ST announced the automotive Stellar P3E on February 10, 2026; it is a separate automotive microcontroller that also uses Neural-ART acceleration. It should not be confused with the general-purpose STM32N6 family or its December 2024 announcement. ST’s Stellar P3E announcement covers that distinct product.
