To find a Java object’s size, inspect it on the JVM that runs your application: use Java Object Layout (JOL) to report one instance’s layout, then use profiling or a heap dump to understand how objects contribute to real memory use. A source-level field count cannot give a reliable universal byte size because headers, reference representation, field layout, and alignment depend on the runtime.
First decide which kind of size you need
“Object size” can mean three different things. Name the one you measure so the result is useful and comparable.
| Measure | What it includes | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Shallow instance size | One instance’s header, fields, and padding, as laid out by the target VM. | Understanding the memory layout of a particular class instance. |
| Reachable footprint | The instance and the objects reachable from it. | Estimating the object graph retained through a particular instance. |
| Heap-wide or class-wide profile | Counts and aggregate sizes across a workload or heap dump. | Finding which classes or allocation sites matter in the application. |
These numbers answer different questions. A shallow size is not the total memory retained by an object graph, and neither alone describes how much a class contributes across a running workload.
What determines a Java object’s size?
A useful first estimate accounts for the object header, instance fields, references, and alignment padding. The JVM’s layout rules determine how those parts fit together; field count alone is not enough, and a reference should not be assumed to have a particular width without checking the active VM configuration.

- Valued Carpenter Pencil Set: You will get 2 pcs solid carpenter pencils with 26 piece 2.8 mm refills, 1 replaceable sharpener, 1 plastic storage box.The complete carpenter pencils combination allows you to finish your work faster and more easily
- Deep Hole Marker Pencil: The deep-hole construction pencils adopts 45mm elongated tip design, which is more convenient to mark in the small hole or in other tight areas that other carpenter markers cannot reach
- Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
For example, two classes with similar fields can have different instance sizes because their headers, field offsets, or padding differ. Inheritance and reference fields make inspecting actual offsets especially valuable. A hand calculation can explain the contributors, but treat it as an estimate until you verify it on the target runtime.
Inspect a class layout with JOL
OpenJDK describes Java Object Layout (JOL) as “the tiny toolbox to analyze object layout in JVMs.” Its internals mode inspects a class layout in the running VM and reports information such as header details, field offsets, field sizes, and alignment gaps. The output is tied to the JVM on which you run it, which is why it is more useful than a portable byte-count formula.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
JOL documents both a command-line executable JAR and library use. When using it as a library, its documentation recommends agent manifest attributes. Consult the JOL project documentation for the available modes and setup details.
- Run JOL using the same JDK, architecture, and relevant VM options as the application you want to understand.
- Inspect the target class with
internalsto see its live layout and reported instance size. - Record the VM mode, object alignment, and compressed-reference settings alongside the result.
- If you need the instance plus its reachable objects, use JOL’s
footprintmode instead of treating the shallow instance size as the full graph.
For important memory decisions, measure under the exact target configuration: changing the runtime or its options can change layout.

Use profiling to find what matters in a workload
Layout inspection tells you how one instance is represented; it does not tell you whether that class is a major source of memory use in production. Profiling provides workload context, including allocation information that can help identify which classes or code locations are producing objects.
Oracle’s Java diagnostic-tools documentation describes Java Flight Recorder (JFR) and Java Mission Control (JMC) as paths for examining allocation behavior. Use those tools to investigate allocation patterns, then inspect relevant code when the profile points to particular objects or sites. A workload profile complements JOL; it does not make a layout measurement portable to another JVM configuration.

Use a heap dump for aggregate questions
When the question concerns the composition of a captured heap rather than one live instance, JOL documents heap-dump analysis, including statistics, duplicate detection, string analysis, and estimates for different VM modes. Its heapdump-estimates mode can project what a dump’s footprint might look like under alternative VM modes.
That projection is an estimate from dump data, not an inspection of the live layout under the alternative configuration. It can help compare possibilities, but verify consequential conclusions against the runtime you intend to use.

Account for HotSpot configuration and Java version
Object-size claims depend on runtime details. In the Oracle Java SE 27 java command reference, compressed object pointers are described as enabled by default on the documented HotSpot configuration. They represent references as 32-bit offsets and have a default range of 32 GB; the reference also documents an object-alignment option that can allow compressed pointers with larger heaps. These are HotSpot details, not guarantees for every JVM or release, so check the flags and documentation for the Java version you actually run.
The same Java SE 27 reference states: “Using compact object headers reduces memory footprint in the Java heap by 4 bytes per object (on average) and often improves performance.” Treat that as Oracle’s documented average for the feature, not a fixed subtraction that applies to every object or every JDK.
The available documentation here is centered on HotSpot and JOL. It does not establish a single layout formula across all JVM implementations, garbage collectors, architectures, and releases. For a non-HotSpot runtime, consult that implementation’s documentation and measure the runtime directly.
