The company’s news index dates its announcement to February 10, 2003, while a later Green Hills article says the product’s first FAA DO-178B Level A certification was in 2002. Those are distinct dates and vendor-reported claims; the available sources do not establish the specific software configuration or provide an FAA approval artifact for the S-92 installation.
What was announced, and when?
Green Hills Software’s historical news index lists an announcement titled “FAA Certifies INTEGRITY RTOS for DO-178B, Level A Use In Sikorsky S-92 Helicopter” on February 10, 2003. The title places the claim in the context of the S-92 aircraft program, rather than establishing a universal approval for the INTEGRITY RTOS product family. Green Hills Software’s historical INTEGRITY-178 news index
In a separate article published March 31, 2009, Green Hills says the first FAA DO-178B Level A certification was in 2002. That retrospective date does not replace the 2003 date of the S-92 announcement: one is the vendor’s stated first-certification year, the other is the date its index assigns to the S-92 headline. Does “FAA certified” mean the RTOS was approved for every aircraft?
No. Read the claim as historical and program-specific. FAA aircraft certification concerns approval of airborne products and the software and electronic hardware used in airborne systems and equipment. A software assurance basis within an aircraft program is not the same as a blanket FAA certificate covering every release, configuration, or possible application of an RTOS. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The sources establish the S-92 headline and Green Hills’ account of the first certification year. They do not independently show the underlying FAA approval artifact or identify the exact INTEGRITY software version, configuration, or approval scope for the S-92 installation. Accordingly, the headline supports a historical claim in that aircraft-program context, not a configuration-level conclusion for other projects.
What does DO-178B Level A mean for an RTOS?
DO-178B is guidance for airborne software assurance, and Level A is its highest software level. In practical terms, a claim involving an RTOS at Level A concerns the assurance evidence and development processes associated with the software in its intended airborne application; it should not be read as a consumer-style product rating or as proof that every use of the RTOS is automatically acceptable.

The FAA’s 2002 report on commercial off-the-shelf RTOSs says DO-178B was recognized as an acceptable means of compliance in the context of Advisory Circular AC 20-115B. The report is research material, and the FAA expressly cautions that its research reports do not represent official policy or guidance. FAA, DOT/FAA/AR-02/118
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does the historical claim fit current FAA guidance?
The FAA’s current “Software & Airborne Electronic Hardware” page lists AC 20-115D, which addresses airborne software assurance using EUROCAE ED-12 and RTCA DO-178 revisions. This current listing provides context for present-day projects; it does not retroactively change what Green Hills said about the S-92-era DO-178B claim. A project should follow the applicable certification basis and authority guidance for that project, rather than assume an older revision governs today. FAA: Software & Airborne Electronic Hardware
