Yes—if your oscilloscope supports saving to the specific kind of GPIB storage device the emulator presents. A GPIB connector alone does not guarantee disk-save capability or compatibility. Check the scope manual for its supported external-drive protocols, then match that protocol to the emulator’s firmware. With HPDisk, the scope sees a legacy HP disk drive; the emulator stores disk images on an SD card, and you may need a separate utility to read files inside those images.

What a GPIB disk emulator does

GPIB, also called HP-IB, is the connection used by many older test instruments and peripherals. A disk emulator uses that bus to present itself to an instrument as a storage device. The scope can then use its own storage commands or front-panel save functions, while the emulator records the data on modern removable media.

HPDisk is one example. Its project documentation describes an emulator that presents an HP disk-drive interface and stores disk images as files on a FAT32-formatted SD card. The scope is not necessarily writing ordinary files directly onto the card: the saved data can be inside a disk image that needs suitable software to inspect or extract. See the HPDisk project documentation for its firmware, configuration, and image details.

Check whether your scope and emulator speak the same protocol

The key compatibility question is not simply whether both devices have GPIB connectors. The scope’s firmware must support saving to an external disk, and the emulator must implement the storage protocol and drive behavior the scope expects. HPDisk documents support for the Amigo and SS/80 protocol families in its current firmware description; it distinguishes Amigo from the later CS/80 family. HP units vary: some support Amigo, some CS/80, and some both. These are protocol families, not a universal GPIB disk standard that every scope implements.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

HPDisk documentation gives 9121D-style Amigo and 9122D-style SS/80 drives as examples, and also describes a 9134D hard-disk example. Those examples illustrate possible drive interfaces, but do not establish compatibility with any particular oscilloscope. Start with the exact scope make and model and its manual’s external-storage section.

How to check compatibility and prepare a save

  1. Find the scope’s exact model and manual. Look for external disk, storage, or save/load instructions. Confirm that the instrument can save to a GPIB-attached disk and note any supported drive models or protocol family.
  2. Match the protocol to the emulator firmware. Verify that the emulator supports the protocol required by the scope; do not infer compatibility from the connector or from another instrument’s success.
  3. Set up the emulator for the host. Check its drive configuration and GPIB address, format the SD card as required, and confirm the expected disk-image format. HPDisk documents configuration files on the card and FAT32 storage. Its documentation describes a 4 GB image-file limit under its stated FATFs configuration; that is an implementation limit for HPDisk, not a general GPIB storage limit.
  4. Make a small test save before relying on the setup. Use the scope’s own save procedure, then inspect the resulting image with an appropriate utility. HPDisk names Linux LIF utilities and HPDir for examining saved contents. Some legacy image formats may need conversion before they can be accessed with a chosen tool.

Getting files back out of the disk image

Plan for two layers: the SD card holds the emulator’s image file, and the scope’s saved data may be stored within that image using a legacy disk format such as LIF. Copying the image to a computer does not necessarily make the scope’s individual files immediately visible in a normal file browser. Use an appropriate image and filesystem utility to inspect or extract them, and check whether conversion is needed for the particular format. The HPDisk documentation points to Linux LIF utilities and HPDir as options for inspecting contents.

Disk emulation is different from computer-controlled waveform transfer

If your goal is to send waveform data directly from the scope to a computer, you may be looking for a controller-and-software workflow rather than an emulated disk. NI-488.2 is software for NI GPIB controllers and embedded controllers with GPIB ports, as described in the NI-488.2 User Manual, updated February 21, 2023. That controller software is not itself a disk-drive emulator, and its documentation does not establish that a particular scope supports disk saving over GPIB. Choose based on whether you need the scope’s front-panel save/load behavior or direct computer-controlled transfer.

Why other GPIB storage projects may not substitute

AR488_Store is a separate GPIB storage-emulator project. Its repository identifies Tektronix 4924 tape-drive emulation as its currently supported device and lists its commands and build requirements. A tape-drive emulator and a disk-drive emulator are not interchangeable just because both use GPIB and removable storage; the host must expect the peripheral type and command set the project provides. See the AR488_Store repository for its stated support.
