To make a CSS bouncing arrow, animate its transform: translateY() value with @keyframes, then use prefers-reduced-motion to turn off decorative movement for visitors who request less motion. The example below links the arrow to page content, so its purpose remains available without animation.
Build a bouncing arrow
Add an arrow that points to the section the reader should reach. This example links to an element with the ID details:

The animation shorthand sets the keyframe name, duration, easing, repetition, and direction: here, the arrow travels between the two positions once per second, repeats indefinitely, and reverses on alternate iterations. The inline-block display makes the text glyph transformable; transforms do not affect ordinary non-replaced inline content. See MDN’s animation property reference and guide to using CSS animations.
Adjust the bounce or pause it
Change the two translateY() values to make the movement smaller or larger, and adjust the duration to control its pace. A shorter duration makes each pass quicker; a longer one makes it slower. The timing function controls how the movement accelerates and decelerates. Choose values that suit the page rather than treating the example’s settings as a required formula.

To pause the animation in response to a control, set animation-play-state: paused on the animated element. Set it back to running to resume. MDN documents this property in its animation reference.
Respect reduced-motion preferences
The media query in the example checks whether the visitor’s operating-system or browser preference asks for reduced motion. The relevant value is reduce, not none. For a decorative, continuously bouncing arrow, animation: none removes the movement while leaving the link usable. Do not make motion the only way to communicate an instruction. Keep the destination clear through visible text, the surrounding layout, or the link’s accessible name. Reduced-motion preferences are a reason to minimize non-essential movement, not to blindly remove animations that convey essential information.

Fix common problems
- The arrow does not move: Check that the element’s animation name matches the name after
@keyframes, and that the keyframes change a property the element can animate, such astransform. - The text arrow will not transform: Apply the animation to a wrapper with
display: inline-block, as in the example. - Reduced motion does not stop it: Confirm the media query is present and that a later or more specific matching rule is not overriding it. CSS source order and specificity determine which matching rule wins.
- Another effect disrupts the bounce: Avoid applying separate animations that both set
transformon the same element unless you account for how those animations interact; one animation can override another on the same property.
