Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf a website’s chat widget is missing, blank, or stuck loading, first work out whether the problem affects one visitor, one browser, or the whole site. Then check the deployed widget snippet, browser console and Network panel, content-security and network rules, consent settings, and page-specific code. These checks help distinguish a script that never loads from a widget that loads but is hidden or cannot connect.
Start by narrowing down where the failure occurs
Before changing code or privacy settings, compare the affected experience across visitors, pages, and browsers. This helps identify whether the likely cause is in a visitor’s browser, a particular page, or the site-wide deployment.
| What you observe | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| One visitor is affected; others can open chat | That visitor’s browser profile, extensions, cookies, storage, and network restrictions. |
| Chat fails on one page but works elsewhere | That page’s embed, template, scripts, styles, consent behavior, or page-specific settings. |
| Chat fails across pages or for many visitors | The deployed snippet, recent site changes, vendor configuration, CSP, firewall, or managed network policy. |
| The vendor script loads, but no usable widget appears | Suppression or access rules, consent and storage, connection failures, and conflicts with page code. |
Record the affected page URL, browser and version, operating system, approximate time the problem began, and whether a deployment, consent-banner, tag-manager, CSP, or browser-extension change happened around then.
Confirm the widget and its deployment
Identify the exact product and widget generation
A vendor may offer more than one chat product or widget generation, with different installation snippets and settings. Identify the provider and the precise widget installed before following setup instructions. For example, Zendesk distinguishes Chat-only, Web Widget (Classic), and newer Web Widget configurations; their snippets and configuration steps are not interchangeable. See Zendesk’s Chat installation guidance and its guide to identifying the widget.

- Open the affected page and confirm that the correct vendor snippet is present in the delivered page source or through the site’s tag manager.
- Confirm that the vendor’s deployment is enabled and that the latest page or tag-manager change has been published. Reload the published page after updating it.
- If your page calls the widget’s JavaScript API, make sure that code runs after the vendor’s loader snippet. Zendesk specifically cautions that scripts using the
zEAPI should follow its snippet. - Follow the placement instructions for the installed product. Zendesk says its Chat embed can be placed in the page head or at the end of the body, but this is product-specific advice, not a universal placement rule.
Zendesk’s documentation also advises avoiding scripts that block the browser from continuing to render the page while they load. A delayed or blocking script can affect page rendering; use the installed provider’s instructions rather than moving snippets blindly.

Use browser developer tools to find the failure
Reproduce the issue while watching the browser’s Console and Network panels. In many browsers, developer tools open with F12 or through the browser’s Inspect or Developer Tools menu. Reload the page with the tools open, then note the first relevant error and the request associated with it.
- JavaScript exception: Note whether it names the widget or the host page. An error in page code can interrupt widget initialization even when the vendor script is present.
- Missing, blocked, or failed script request: Record the request host and status or browser block reason. This points toward deployment, CSP, network filtering, or a failed resource.
- Content Security Policy (CSP) violation: Record the violated directive, such as
script-srcorconnect-src, and the requested host shown in the message. - Connection or WebSocket failure: The widget may have started loading but failed to establish the connection it needs.
- Successful script load but no visible widget: Investigate hiding or suppression rules, access settings, consent and storage, and page CSS or JavaScript conflicts.
Intercom recommends reproducing the problem and checking the console for CSP violations. Its required domains vary by feature and region, and live chat may use a separate WebSocket host. Use Intercom’s current CSP guidance only for Intercom installations; its hosts are not a generic allowlist for other chat providers.
Check CSP, firewall, and managed network rules
A restrictive security policy can block a widget’s script, connection, images, or other resources. If the browser reports a blocked resource, compare that exact host and directive with the installed provider’s current security instructions. Make the smallest required change at the layer that owns the rule: the site’s response headers, a proxy, firewall, or managed platform.

- Have the site administrator or security team update only the required policy. Intercom recommends auditing in report-only mode and making changes incrementally.
- Reload and reproduce the problem to see whether the original block is resolved or another resource is now identified.
Do not paste one vendor’s hostnames into another provider’s policy, and do not weaken the site’s entire security policy to make chat appear. A corporate firewall or managed browser may be controlled by an administrator; a visitor should not try to bypass those protections.
Review consent, storage, and widget access rules
Consent and browser storage
A consent integration may intentionally prevent chat from starting until the visitor grants the relevant permission. Check that the site’s consent manager and the vendor’s widget are configured to work together; do not ask visitors to disable privacy protections as a workaround.
Behavior depends on the product and configuration. Zendesk documents that refusing cookie permission makes Chat unavailable in its classic widget. Its messaging widget relies on cookies plus local and session storage, and is hidden when all storage is disallowed. Those details apply to Zendesk’s documented widgets, not necessarily to another provider.

Domain, visitor, and suppression settings
For Zendesk Chat, check whether Chat is enabled and review allowed domains, blocked countries, visitor authentication, and any applicable hide or suppression settings. These can make chat unavailable for particular pages or visitors. Other providers may use different names and rules, so inspect the settings for the product actually installed. Zendesk describes relevant configuration in its widget identification and configuration guidance and installation guidance.

Separate browser problems from page-code conflicts
Compare browsers and profiles
- Try the page in another supported browser or a private window.
- If that changes the result, test a clean browser profile with extensions disabled, where permitted.
- Clear site data only when appropriate: doing so can sign the visitor out or reset site preferences.
Extensions, cookies, cached files, browser differences, and network settings can affect website interfaces. Salesforce’s browser troubleshooting guidance discusses these as causes of missing Lightning UI and recommends comparison-based triage; because that article is about Lightning rather than chat widgets, confirm any suspected cause using the affected chat page’s own console and Network evidence.
Test for conflicts on the host page
If the widget works on other pages but fails on a particular template, test the embed on a minimal page or isolate it from the theme’s JavaScript and CSS. This can reveal whether page code or styling prevents initialization or hides the widget. Salesforce recommends an iframe-hosted standalone page as an isolation option for its Embedded Service on external websites. Use that approach only if the installed provider supports it; it is not a general fix for all chat widgets.

Escalate with evidence, not just a screenshot
If the problem persists, send the site administrator or provider support a concise record of what failed and where:
- Affected page URL and the exact chat product or widget generation.
- Browser, version, operating system, and whether the issue affects other pages, browsers, or visitors.
- Approximate time of failure and timezone, plus relevant recent site, consent, tag-manager, or policy changes.
- Console error text and the failed request’s host, status, or block reason.
- What changed when you tested another browser or a private window.
Before sharing screenshots or a HAR network capture, redact session identifiers, authentication tokens, customer messages, and personal information. Ask the site administrator to handle code, CSP, firewall, and consent changes; visitors generally cannot safely change those site settings.

Why does a chat widget load for some visitors but not others?
Different browser profiles, extensions, storage permissions, authentication, allowed-domain rules, or network policies can produce different results. Compare the affected visitor’s browser with a second browser or profile, then check the page’s console and Network panel.

Should I disable my ad blocker or privacy settings?
Do not treat disabling privacy protections as the fix. A clean profile or private-window comparison can help identify a browser-specific cause, while the site owner should check its consent integration and the provider’s documented storage requirements.
Can I copy a chat provider’s CSP domains from another website?
No. Required hosts vary by provider, feature, and sometimes region. Use the installed provider’s current instructions and the exact blocked host and directive shown in the browser.
What information should I give support?
Provide the affected URL, widget generation, browser and operating system, timestamp and timezone, scope of the failure, console errors, and failed request details. Remove tokens, session identifiers, personal data, and customer messages from any attachments.
