Before using a screen-mirroring app, update and lock your Android phone, verify the app’s publisher, and review every permission or special-access request before approving it. Then check the Privacy dashboard after setup. Calling an app “local” does not, by itself, establish where it sends or stores screen data.
1. Update and lock your phone
Install available updates
Open your phone’s Settings and look for Security & privacy to review security alerts and system updates. Install available Android and security updates before setting up the app. On Android 13 and later, security and privacy settings are generally grouped together; older versions may show separate Security and Privacy menus. Manufacturers can change names and locations, so use Settings search if the path differs.
Confirm a screen lock is active
Set a PIN, password, or other screen lock if you do not already have one. The Security & privacy area can also surface information about your device lock, account security, permissions, and Play Protect.
2. Verify the app before installing it
Check the source and publisher
Find the app through its developer’s official site or a trusted app store. Check that the publisher name matches the developer you intended to install from, and that the app’s stated purpose fits the mirroring feature you need. Do not follow unexpected install links or instructions from a text, email, or caller.

Google Play Protect checks apps on Google Play before download and periodically scans installed apps, including apps from other sources. It can warn about, disable, or remove harmful apps, so leave scanning on. It is a protective layer, not a guarantee that an app is safe or an independent review of its privacy practices.
Respond cautiously to verification warnings
As of the Android Help guidance accessed October 4, 2026, developer verification began applying in September 2026 to downloads from participating stores on certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. The listed stores include Google Play, Samsung Galaxy Store, and other regional stores. A global rollout across all installation sources is planned for 2027. Whether a requirement applies depends on your country, whether your device is certified, and the installation source. If your phone blocks an install or displays a developer-verification warning, verify the publisher and contact the developer rather than reflexively bypassing the safeguard.

3. Evaluate permissions and special access
Match each request to the feature
Read each permission prompt and ask whether access is necessary for the feature you are using. Decline requests that are unrelated or unexplained. A mirroring app may need some access to perform its stated function, but the app’s name or purpose alone does not explain every permission.
Treat Accessibility and restricted settings as sensitive
Accessibility access can let an app read screen content and interact with apps on your behalf. Other special access—such as notification access or permission to display over other apps—also merits a clear explanation from the developer. Do not enable restricted settings or Accessibility access just because an installation guide tells you to. Google Android Help advises: “We don’t recommend that you allow restricted settings unless you trust the app developer.” Enable such access only when you trust the developer and understand why the app needs it.

4. Check what the app accesses after setup
Review the Privacy dashboard
Open Settings and search for Privacy dashboard to review which apps used permissions and when. Google’s cited Android guidance describes an activity window of the last 24 hours on Android 12 and the last 7 days on Android 13; availability and menu paths vary by device and version.
Remove access you no longer need
If the dashboard or permission settings show access you do not expect, investigate it and change the app’s permissions. Revoke access that is no longer needed for the feature. If you cannot establish why a permission is being used, stop using the app until you can verify its purpose with the developer.

5. Check the app’s privacy and connection details
No connection method or data-handling behavior can be established for an unnamed mirroring app. Before using one, consult its documentation and privacy disclosures for answers to these questions:
- Connection path: Does it use local Wi-Fi, USB, or a vendor relay or cloud service?
- Capture and retention: Does it record or cache screen data? If so, where is it stored, for how long, and how is it deleted?
- Sharing: Does the app transmit screen data to a service or share it with another party?
- Access: What is the reason for each permission or special-access setting, especially Accessibility?
- Publisher and updates: Who publishes the app, where is it distributed, and is there a current verification warning?
- Protected content: Does the app explain when some screens will not appear in the mirror?
Google Play policy requires apps distributed through Google Play to respect another app’s FLAG_SECURE restriction. That flag is intended to prevent sensitive app content from appearing in screenshots or on non-secure displays, so protected screens may not mirror. This behavior is a content-protection limit, not evidence by itself that mirroring is malfunctioning.

6. Consider Advanced Protection only if it fits your needs
Android Advanced Protection is optional and is not required for screen mirroring. It requires a screen lock and may require a reboot. Listed protections include Play Protect enforcement, blocking installs and updates from unknown sources, restricting Accessibility to verified tools, and USB protection while the screen is locked. Availability and details depend on the device and Android version.
Understand the inactivity reboot
When Advanced Protection’s Inactivity Reboot feature is available and enabled, it restarts a phone that has remained locked for 72 hours. Afterward, user data is unreadable until the phone is freshly unlocked. This is a feature-specific behavior, not a default setting on every Android phone.
