Start by restarting the tablet, installing any available Android and app updates, and checking its internal storage. Google says an Android device can start having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free; that is a troubleshooting benchmark, not a guarantee that freeing space will speed up every tablet. If the slowdown remains, use safe mode to check whether a downloaded app is involved before considering a factory reset.

1. Restart the tablet and identify what feels slow

Restart first, then use the tablet normally and check whether the problem improves. Google recommends restarting after each troubleshooting step so you can tell whether that change helped. Menu names and restart methods vary by manufacturer; if the instructions below do not match your tablet, consult its maker’s support page.

Notice whether the whole tablet is sluggish—such as when opening settings or switching apps—or whether only webpages and streaming are slow. If the problem is limited to internet activities, check the Wi-Fi connection and network settings rather than treating it as general device lag. Google’s slow-device troubleshooting guide includes connection checks for this case.

2. Install available system and app updates

Check for an Android update

Open Settings and look for System and Software update. On some tablets, About tablet is an intermediate menu. Labels and paths vary by device. Install an update if one is offered, then restart and check performance again. Older tablets may have no newer system update available.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Update apps from Google Play

Open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, choose Manage apps & devices, and review available app updates. App updates may fix problems, but they are not a promise of faster performance.

3. Check internal storage and free space if needed

In Settings, look for Storage to see how much internal space is available. Google’s Android Help says a device can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free. Treat that as a general troubleshooting threshold, not a performance guarantee for every model. Google’s guidance explains the threshold and related steps.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

If space is nearly full, review large downloads, offline media, and apps you no longer use. Remove only items you are comfortable losing or can restore. Check the available space and the original slowdown again afterward.

Would a microSD card help?

Only if your tablet supports a card and low internal storage is contributing to the problem. Moving photos, videos, or other files off internal storage may help in that specific situation, but a card does not increase the tablet’s processor speed or RAM. Check the exact model’s specifications and support instructions before buying or inserting a card.

Android’s portable storage mode can hold files such as photos and videos, but does not allow apps to be installed on the card. Internal (also called adoptable) storage can hold files and apps, but the card cannot then be transferred between devices. Formatting a card permanently deletes its data, so back it up first. See Google’s instructions for using an SD card before choosing a mode.

4. Use safe mode to check whether a downloaded app is responsible

Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps. If the tablet is noticeably more responsive in safe mode, Google says a downloaded app is likely causing the problem. The way to enter safe mode varies by manufacturer, so use the tablet maker’s instructions if you need help finding the correct method.

  1. Restart into safe mode using the instructions for your tablet model.
  2. Check whether the same slowdown still occurs while downloaded apps are disabled.
  3. Restart normally. If safe mode improved performance, remove recently downloaded apps one at a time.
  4. After each removal, restart and check again. This can help identify the app associated with the change; reinstall it if you decide you still need it.

Google’s slow-device guide describes safe mode as a way to isolate downloaded apps and recommends checking after removing them.

5. Understand the trade-off in Battery Saver

Battery Saver is designed to extend battery life, not serve as a universal speed setting. Depending on the device and apps, it may limit or stop background activity, which can delay notifications, network connections, or other app functions, and may reduce visual effects. If an app seems delayed while Battery Saver is on, compare its behavior with the setting off. Also avoid letting the tablet overheat: Google notes that a hot device’s battery drains faster. Google’s Battery Saver guidance describes its effects.

6. Escalate only after the reversible steps

If restarting, updates, storage cleanup, and the app check do not resolve the slowdown, contact the tablet manufacturer for model-specific guidance. Generic Android instructions cannot account for every menu, hardware configuration, or support option. Tablets with limited memory can also be more prone to slow app starts, unresponsive apps, and crashes; software changes cannot necessarily overcome a device’s hardware limits. Android Developers’ memory guidance explains these constraints.

Factory reset is a last resort

A factory reset removes device data and installed apps, including their associated data. Back up anything you need before resetting, and make sure you can restore or sign in to important accounts afterward. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model. Because this is disruptive, do it only after the less disruptive checks and with a backup in place. Google’s troubleshooting guide covers reset as an escalation step.

Why quick-fix apps and hidden settings are not the next step

A “RAM booster,” cleaner, or task-killer app is not an established fix in the official guidance cited here. Avoid routine tweaks such as changing Developer Options, disabling system apps, rooting, or installing custom firmware: they can create new problems and are not necessary for the troubleshooting sequence above.
