Short answer: You cannot determine encryption from an app’s name, its use of Wi-Fi, or packets that look unreadable. First identify the exact app and connection path, then check what the vendor says about video, audio, pairing, controls, and any relay. A packet capture can help verify which traffic flows, but opaque traffic alone does not prove encryption.
First identify what “Steam Frame mirroring” means
Steam Frame is Valve’s standalone VR headset, designed primarily to stream a Steam library from a PC. Valve’s product page describes its wireless connectivity, including a dedicated wireless adapter, dual radios, and Multi-Link Streaming. Those features describe connectivity and performance, not whether the stream is encrypted.
Steam Remote Play is Valve’s streaming technology, and Valve says Steam Link hardware and its streaming app use Remote Play. But “mirroring app” could also mean a separate third-party app. The answer can vary by app, version, operating system, host and client, and whether the connection stays on the local network or uses a relay. Do not assume that a statement about one of these products or features applies to another.
Before checking security, record:
- The app’s exact name and version.
- The headset, host device, and their operating systems.
- Whether you are using Steam Link/Remote Play or another app.
- Whether the session is local-only or can use a remote relay.
Check what the app’s documentation actually protects
Look for an official security or protocol statement, not just words such as “secure,” “private,” or “encrypted.” Find out whether it covers each part of the connection:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Pairing and the initial exchange of credentials or keys.
- Video and audio once mirroring begins.
- Control and input traffic.
- Connections through a relay, if the app supports one.
A useful statement should explain how the headset and host authenticate each other and how keys are established. It should also make clear whether traffic is protected against tampering as well as interception. Encryption claims that omit the media stream, a connection mode, or authentication details do not establish that every part of a mirroring session is protected.
What Valve’s published pages establish—and what they don’t
Valve’s Steam Frame overview and its product page describe the headset and wireless streaming features, but do not specify that the Steam Frame media stream is encrypted.

Valve’s Steam Link support page lists ports used by Remote Play, including UDP 27031 and 27036, TCP 27036 and 27037, and additional UDP ports for VR streaming. Valve’s Remote Play page describes real-time video encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol. Neither port numbers nor that protocol description confirm encryption of the audiovisual stream.
Keep a separate feature in its proper scope: Valve explicitly says that local network game-file transfers are compressed but not encrypted on its Steam Local Network Game Transfers page. That statement concerns file transfers, not automatically the audio/video traffic sent by Remote Play.

Use a packet capture as evidence, not as a verdict
A capture can show which devices communicate and when. It cannot, by itself, prove that a flow is encrypted just because the payload is not readable. Compression, a proprietary binary format, or other encoding can also make traffic look opaque. Likewise, a port number or the use of TCP or UDP does not reveal whether the application-layer data is cryptographically protected.
- Capture pairing. Start before pairing the headset and host so you can identify traffic associated with setup.
- Capture an idle period. Observe what continues to communicate when no mirror session is active.
- Capture a live session. Start mirroring and record the flows that appear or change.
- Identify endpoints and flows. Note source and destination devices, ports, and whether each flow uses TCP or UDP. Where available, correlate the traffic with app logs or process-level network information.
- Compare observations with documentation. Check whether the identified flows match the app’s stated protocol and whether the documentation says those specific flows are protected.
A lock icon, a TLS connection used for sign-in, or an unreadable packet capture is not proof that the separate video/audio flow is encrypted. If the privacy decision is important, prefer source-code review or a reproducible protocol analysis over visual inspection alone.

How to report what you found
Keep documentation claims distinct from observations and stronger technical verification. For example:
- Documentation: “The vendor says the video stream is encrypted,” followed by the exact app version and the modes the statement covers.
- Capture: “The observed capture is consistent with the documented traffic pattern.” This describes what you saw, not a cryptographic proof.
- Unverified: “I could not verify whether the media stream is encrypted.” This is the accurate result when documentation and available analysis do not establish it.
For Steam Remote Play specifically, the cited Valve pages provide port and protocol information but do not confirm whether the media stream is encrypted. That makes the stream’s encryption status unverified from those pages; it does not prove that the stream is unencrypted. No comparative test of competing Steam Frame mirroring apps is established here.
