If you want more than a basic read-later queue, Readwise Reader is the best-supported alternative to consider: it handles articles and other formats, offers highlighting and annotation, and has documented ways to import some Instapaper content. It is not a universal winner, though. The right choice depends on your devices, offline habits, need to preserve an existing library, and willingness to pay.
Which Instapaper alternative fits your reading workflow?
Start with how you actually save and read. A straightforward article queue has different needs from a library that includes newsletters, PDFs, videos, and annotated research. The shortlist commonly includes Readwise Reader, Matter, Raindrop.io, Wallabag, and GoodLinks, but current official details for those competitors are not established here well enough for a reliable feature-by-feature ranking. Treat them as options to investigate, not as a verified order of best to worst.

Readwise’s official product overview describes Reader as a reading and annotation tool for web articles, newsletters, EPUBs, PDFs, videos, tweets, and other formats. That breadth makes it a plausible fit if your reading pile extends beyond webpages. It also connects reading with highlights and annotations, so it may suit readers who want to revisit and work with what they save rather than simply clear an inbox.
That broader workflow may be unnecessary if you only want a small queue of articles to read later. Before switching, decide whether extra formats and annotation tools solve a real problem for you or simply add features you will not use.

How does Readwise Reader work offline?
Reader supports offline use, but availability depends on content being cached before you lose connectivity. Readwise’s offline guidance says to open the web app before going offline; on mobile, open the app so document text can be cached. Do not assume that every item in your account will be available offline automatically.
What does Readwise Reader cost?
Readwise currently lists a 30-day trial, followed by $9.99 per month when billed annually or $12.99 per month when billed monthly for Readwise including Reader. These are different billing commitments, not interchangeable monthly prices. Confirm the terms on the official pricing page before subscribing, since subscription prices and trials can change.

Can you move an Instapaper library to Readwise Reader?
Readwise documents a direct Instapaper connection, but its help article notes both mapping rules and possible import limits. Its Instapaper import instructions say archived items map to Reader’s Archive, the ten most recently saved unarchived items map to Inbox, and the remaining unarchived items map to Later.
The same documentation warns that some private Instapaper content cannot be imported. It also describes a possible Instapaper API export bug that can limit an export to 500 items. If the direct route leaves items out, Readwise recommends downloading an Instapaper CSV and uploading it instead. After importing, check a sample of older and newer entries, archived and unarchived items, and anything especially important; the documented routes do not justify assuming every item and its metadata will transfer intact.

What if your library is in Matter or Raindrop.io?
Readwise documents separate import routes for these services, with specific limitations. Those instructions describe what Readwise Reader accepts; they do not establish equivalent migration behavior in other apps.
Matter
The documented Matter import uses email. Readwise says this import does not currently preserve tags or document locations. If either is important to your organization, account for that loss before moving the library. See the Matter import instructions.

Raindrop.io
Readwise’s documented route is to export Raindrop.io bookmarks to CSV and upload the file. The CSV must have a URL column; a title column is optional. The instructions do not establish that all Raindrop metadata will be preserved. See the Raindrop.io import instructions.
