For a Kindle, send an EPUB through Amazon’s Send to Kindle service; don’t assume a raw EPUB copied over USB will open. For a Kobo, copy a non-protected EPUB to the e-reader over USB. The routes differ because Amazon processes EPUBs through its sending service, while Kobo’s documented computer method imports non-protected files directly.
Send an EPUB to a Kindle with Send to Kindle
Amazon lists EPUB as a supported input for Send to Kindle. You can upload the file on the web or email it to your Kindle’s Send to Kindle address. Amazon says the service sends documents to the Kindle library and devices or apps at no additional cost; file processing does not guarantee identical formatting on every screen.
Upload the EPUB on the web
- Open Amazon’s Send to Kindle page and sign in to the Amazon account associated with your Kindle.
- Select the EPUB file to upload. Amazon’s current help page lists a maximum of 200 MB per web-uploaded document.
- Turn on Add to your library if you want the document available in the library for linked Kindle devices and apps, rather than only sent to a selected device.
- Submit the file. Connect the Kindle to the internet so it can receive the document; availability across devices may depend on delivery and synchronization.
Email the EPUB to your Kindle
- Find the Send to Kindle email address for the Kindle or app in your Amazon account’s device settings.
- In Manage Your Content and Devices, add the email address you will send from to the Approved Personal Document Email List.
- Attach the EPUB to an email addressed to the Send to Kindle address. Amazon’s current email help page lists up to 25 attachments and a total message size of 50 MB.
- Make sure the Kindle has an internet connection, then check its library for the delivered document.
Amazon’s email instructions also describe ZIP attachments for sending larger sets of files; the service opens and converts the contents. The listed email size limit applies to the total message, not to each attachment.
Put a non-protected EPUB on a Kobo over USB
Kobo’s computer-transfer instructions cover non-protected EPUB and PDF files. This import stays on the Kobo used for the transfer; it does not add the book to other Kobo e-readers or apps.

- Turn on the Kobo e-reader and connect it to your computer with a USB cable. Kobo recommends the included cable and a direct connection when possible.
- When the Computer detected prompt appears on the e-reader, tap Connect.
- On the computer, open the KOBOeReader drive.
- Drag the EPUB file into the drive.
- Eject the KOBOeReader drive from the computer before unplugging the cable.
- On the Kobo, open My Books and look for the imported title while the device processes the file.
Kobo also identifies Google Drive and Dropbox as alternative ways to load non-protected files. The setup and availability can vary, so follow the relevant current Kobo help guidance rather than assuming every model supports the same cloud route.
Choose the transfer route that matches your file

Why a transferred EPUB may not open or appear
Check for DRM or other protection first
DRM-protected files may not work with these direct-transfer steps. Kobo explicitly limits its computer method to non-protected EPUBs and PDFs. Its guide links to separate instructions for protected content, so do not treat an ordinary USB copy as a way to bypass protection.

Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing policy, effective January 20, 2026, allows verified purchasers to download EPUB and PDF files only for books confirmed to be DRM-free. DRM-protected books cannot be moved to non-Kindle devices through that download route, and the policy does not apply to Kindle Unlimited or other borrowed books. A Kindle purchase is not automatically an exportable EPUB.
If a Kindle email does not arrive
- Confirm that the address you sent from is on the Approved Personal Document Email List.
- Check that the EPUB is attached, and that the email meets Amazon’s listed attachment and total-size limits.
- Verify that the Kindle has internet access and is registered to the Amazon account associated with the Send to Kindle address.
- For a direct upload instead, confirm the file is within the web-upload limit and use the Send to Kindle page.
If the Kobo does not appear on your computer
- Look for the Kobo’s Computer detected prompt and tap Connect; the device must enter its computer-connection mode.
- Connect directly to the computer rather than through a USB-C hub. Kobo notes that some hubs may not detect the e-reader.
- Try the included cable first. If replacing it, use a cable that supports data transfer and matches the Kobo’s port; a charging-only cable will not transfer files.
- After copying, eject the drive properly, disconnect, and check My Books for the import.
Kindle USB transfer is not the same as sending an EPUB
Amazon documents USB storage transfer, but its instructions differ by operating system and Kindle model. On Windows, a connected Kindle appears as an external drive in File Explorer. On Mac, Kindle Scribe and Kindle models released in 2024 require a separate app for USB transfer: Amazon’s instructions use Send to Kindle for Mac and its USB File Manager, where files or folders can be dragged into the Kindle Documents folder. Amazon says older Kindle models released before 2024, except Scribe, do not need that separate app for Mac transfer.

Because Amazon specifically identifies EPUB as an input for Send to Kindle, that service is the dependable EPUB route. The general USB-transfer instructions do not say that every model can read an unprocessed EPUB copied directly to the device.

Amazon’s manual delivery instructions are for books in your Amazon account and registered Kindle devices; they are not a method for importing an arbitrary EPUB. If you are moving a purchased book to Kobo, the relevant Amazon option is conditional: under the policy effective January 20, 2026, a verified purchaser can download EPUB or PDF only when the book is confirmed DRM-free. If an EPUB is available and non-protected, use Kobo’s USB import steps above.
