No—Steam Frame can run supported games on the headset without a gaming PC. A computer is needed only if you want to stream games from it to the headset. Which route makes sense depends on whether the specific games you want are supported for standalone play.
How Steam Frame plays games
Valve describes Steam Frame as a PC running SteamOS with standalone capabilities, as well as a headset designed for high-quality game streaming from a PC. In standalone mode, the game runs on the headset. In streaming mode, the computer runs the game and sends it to the headset.
Steamworks Development stated on June 4, 2026, that games can run entirely on Steam Frame without it being connected to anything. That means a gaming PC is not a universal requirement; it is part of the streaming setup, not standalone play. Steamworks Development’s announcement explains the standalone capability.
Can Steam Frame play games without a PC?
Yes, provided the game supports Steam Frame standalone play. Do not assume that a game in your Steam library will run on the headset just because it is available on Steam or works with SteamVR.

Valve’s Steam Frame Standalone Verified designation is intended to indicate how well a game works out of the box on the headset without a connected PC. Its criteria include performance at default graphics settings, readable text and interface elements, and usable controls. Check the game’s current standalone status rather than relying on general Steam compatibility; the list can change. Valve describes the device and verification approach on the Steam Frame product page and in its Steamworks announcement.
When do you need a gaming PC?
You need a gaming PC if your plan is to have the computer render a game and stream it to Steam Frame. This route is relevant when you want to play a PC game through the headset rather than run it locally. The game runs on the computer; the headset receives the streamed image and input.

Valve says the box includes a plug-and-play 6 GHz wireless adapter for a dedicated connection between the headset and PC. You do not need to buy a separate streaming adapter just to create that link. Streaming quality can still depend on the network and surrounding environment; Valve’s product description is not an independent test of real-world performance. The product page also describes foveated streaming and claims it typically offers “over a 10x improvement in image quality and effective bandwidth.” That figure is Valve’s claim, not an independently measured result.
Do SteamVR’s PC requirements apply to standalone play?
No. The PC requirements on Steam’s SteamVR listing describe the computer-based SteamVR route; they are not requirements for running a supported game directly on Steam Frame. The listing specifies PC requirements for using SteamVR, including a Windows computer and hardware such as a processor, memory, graphics card, and network connection. If you are choosing between the modes, start with the exact games you expect to play. A standalone listing answers whether the game is intended to work directly on the headset; a SteamVR PC requirement answers a different question about running VR from a computer.

Valve lists a Snapdragon 8 Series processor, 16 GB of RAM, SteamOS, and 256 GB or 1 TB storage options, with microSD expansion. These are manufacturer specifications; they do not establish that every Steam game will run standalone or predict independent real-world performance.
