Measure speckle correlations by recording scattered-light intensity over time and calculating its normalized autocorrelation, g2(τ). The decay shows how quickly the speckle pattern changes, but translating that change into material motion requires a model suited to the scattering regime, sample, detector, and measurement geometry.
What a speckle-correlation measurement tells you
Coherent light scattered by a material forms a granular intensity pattern called speckle. Motion inside the sample—or motion of the sample itself—changes that pattern. A detector records intensity fluctuations, and an intensity autocorrelation compares the signal with a time-shifted copy of itself.
For intensity I(t), the normalized intensity autocorrelation is commonly written:
g2(τ) = ⟨I(t)I(t + τ)⟩ / ⟨I(t)⟩²
Here, τ is the time delay and the brackets denote averaging over valid pairs of samples. At short delays, the intensities tend to remain correlated; as the speckle changes, g2(τ) decays toward its baseline. The decay rate is a measure of decorrelation, not by itself a universal speed or material property.

How to measure g2(τ)
- Choose the illumination and geometry. Illuminate the sample with coherent light, then collect scattered light in a defined transmission or backscattering arrangement. Record the source and detector positions and the collection geometry; they influence the light paths and the correlation curve.
- Record intensity fluctuations. Use a detector channel to acquire a time series, or use a camera to record many speckles at once. Select a detector and sampling interval capable of resolving the expected changes. For camera measurements, avoid combining several speckles within one pixel if you need independent spatial samples.
- Calculate the normalized autocorrelation. Compute the intensity products at each delay and average across valid sample pairs, then normalize by the squared mean intensity. Photon-counting measurements can calculate the correlation from counts; the cited multispeckle study describes such an implementation and curve fitting (Biomedical Optics Express study, 2020).
- Check whether the Siegert relation applies. Under appropriate field-statistics assumptions, intensity and field correlations are related by g2(τ) = 1 + β|g1(τ)|². The factor β depends on coherence and detection geometry. Do not assume this relation automatically: non-Gaussian field statistics can invalidate it.
- Fit a model justified by the experiment. Choose a dynamic or correlation-transport model consistent with the sample motion and scattering regime. Interpret the fitted timescale alongside the optical properties and source-detector geometry, not in isolation.
Choose a detector and sampling strategy
Single-channel time averaging
A single detector channel records intensity over time and estimates the correlation from temporal samples. This approach depends on having enough valid samples and on the averaging being appropriate for the sample. Whether time averaging is defensible depends on stationarity and ergodicity: a changing sample or nonrepresentative time window can make the estimate misleading.
Camera-based multispeckle sampling
A camera records multiple spatial intensity traces, allowing correlations to be estimated across speckles as well as over time. The speckles should be sampled independently rather than blurred together within pixels. In one SPAD-camera diffuse correlation spectroscopy implementation, speckle diameter was calibrated as d = λz/D, where λ is wavelength, z is the fiber-to-camera distance, and D is the fiber-core diameter. The study adjusted speckle diameter to pixel size to improve independent sampling and correlation signal-to-noise; this is an example design choice, not a universal specification (study details).

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Match acquisition to the timescale
Set the temporal bin or frame interval short enough to resolve the expected decorrelation, while respecting detector bandwidth and count-rate limits. Acquire long enough to stabilize the estimate. More detected photons and longer integration can improve signal-to-noise in the cited setup, but instrument limits and sample stability still matter. For example, the 2020 study used 10 µs camera-frame exposure in its rotating-diffuser measurement; that is an experiment-specific setting, not a recommended exposure for every sample.
A practical setup typically includes a coherent source, sample holder, collection optics or fiber, a detector suited to the timescale, and an autocorrelator or software for analysis. A SPAD camera is one possible specialist option for time-resolved multispeckle or photon-counting measurements, but suitability depends on required bandwidth, count rate, pixel sampling, and budget.

Interpret the decay in its scattering and motion context
Strong multiple scattering: diffusing-wave spectroscopy
In strongly multiple-scattering materials, diffusing-wave spectroscopy (DWS) uses intensity autocorrelations together with a diffusive description of light transport to probe sample dynamics. The source-detector arrangement and geometry influence the paths through the sample and therefore the timescale being probed. As Pine, Weitz, Chaikin, and Herbolzheimer put it, “The dependence on geometry provides an important experimental control over the time scale probed” (Physical Review Letters, 1988). Work on multiple scattering in correlated random media further develops the theoretical context (Physical Review B, 1989).
Do not treat a curve shape or time as universal
The measured curve depends on motion, optical properties, geometry, and the validity of the selected model. A 2020 multispeckle study reported a ballistic-motion, Gaussian-like fit for a rotating diffuser and a diffusive-motion, exponential-like fit for a liquid phantom. In that experiment, the fitted decorrelation times were 557 µs for the rotating diffuser and 197 µs for the liquid phantom. These are outcomes of those specific samples and conditions, not reference values for other materials.

Check the assumptions before comparing samples
- Motion: Decide whether ballistic, diffusive, mixed, or non-Gaussian dynamics are plausible. A convenient fit is not evidence that its physical assumptions hold.
- Scattering and geometry: State whether the measurement is in transmission or backscatter and describe the source-detector arrangement and relevant path-length assumptions.
- Signal and sampling: Consider photon count, detector noise and bandwidth, coherence factor β, pixel-to-speckle matching, and repeat-to-repeat uncertainty.
- Averaging: Explain whether the estimate uses time averaging from one channel, spatial averaging across camera speckles, or both, and why that averaging is appropriate.
Temporal sampling and speckle-ensemble approaches have distinct trade-offs; a unified treatment discusses their relationship (Applied Physics Letters Photonics, Caltech PDF).

For a reproducible result, report the source wavelength and illumination, transmission or backscattering geometry, sample and detector arrangement, detector type and bandwidth, temporal binning or exposure, acquisition duration, and how the correlation was averaged and normalized. Also state whether you used the Siegert relation, the fitted functional form and physical model, the fitted decorrelation time, and uncertainty or repeatability.
