Wavefront shaping is the broad practice of controlling light to change how it propagates or focuses. Adaptive optics estimates optical aberrations and applies a correction; time reversal records light after it travels through a medium and sends a reversed or phase-conjugated field back to retrace that path. The terms describe related approaches, not three mutually exclusive technologies.

What does each term mean?

Wavefront shaping

Wavefront shaping means deliberately controlling the spatial—and sometimes temporal or spectral—structure of an optical field. Depending on the goal, a system may use that control to counter distortion, focus light through scattering material, improve a detected signal, or make constructive use of scattering. It is an umbrella term for a range of control methods, rather than one specific device or algorithm. The 2020 review of wavefront-shaping concepts for optical coherence tomography (OCT) describes adaptive optics, time reversal and phase conjugation, iterative shaping, and transfer-matrix methods as distinct principles within this broader landscape (2020 OCT review).

Adaptive optics

Adaptive optics (AO) estimates or measures aberrations—unwanted distortions in an optical wavefront—and applies a compensating change to an optical element. A deformable mirror is one implementation: controlled changes to its surface add a correction to the wavefront. AO is used in fields including astronomy, microscopy, OCT, and ophthalmic imaging. In eye imaging, for example, it addresses aberrations introduced by the eye’s optical elements to improve images of retinal structures (review of adaptive optics in ophthalmology).

Time reversal and phase conjugation

Time reversal begins with a field that has passed through a medium and been recorded. Re-emitting a time-reversed field, or sending back its phase-conjugated counterpart, can reverse propagation through the sample under suitable conditions. The light can then refocus toward the location of its original source. Optical phase conjugation is one way to implement this principle; it is not another name for all wavefront shaping (2023 review of wavefront shaping in scattering media).

How the approaches differ

Aspect Wavefront shaping Adaptive optics Time reversal / phase conjugation
Scope Broad family of methods for controlling an optical field Correction-oriented approach within active wavefront control Reversal and refocusing approach within wavefront control
What guides control Depends on the method: an aberration estimate, feedback signal, or input-output field mapping Estimated or measured aberration A field recorded after propagation through the medium, including phase information in implementations that capture it
How control is applied The input field is set or optimized for a target A compensating correction is applied, often with a deformable mirror A time-reversed or phase-conjugated field is sent back through the medium
Typical goal Control propagation, focus light, or improve imaging in complex media Restore optical performance degraded by aberration Retrace propagation and refocus toward the original source

The distinctions are about emphasis: what information is used to derive control and what the system does with it. A wavefront-shaping optimizer, for instance, could find a correction that is applied by hardware associated with adaptive optics. Literature and implementations do not always draw the boundaries identically, so it is more accurate to describe the method used than to treat the labels as exclusive categories (2020 OCT review; 2023 scattering-media review).

Why medium stability matters

Scattering in biological tissue can limit imaging penetration and resolution. Controlling the incident field can help manage scattered light for signal enhancement or imaging, but the usefulness of a measured correction depends on the sample remaining sufficiently stable during measurement and use. The 2020 OCT review notes that scattering is deterministic at timescales over which a turbid medium can be considered static. If the medium changes, the relationship between the input field and the resulting light can change too, reducing the usefulness of a previously measured control pattern (2020 OCT review).

How to choose a comparison for a real system

There is no supported universal winner among these approaches. Their practical suitability depends on the specific optical setup, medium, and goal. Relevant questions include:

  • Is the main problem an aberration that can be estimated, or a complex scattering relationship that must be measured or explored through feedback?
  • Will the medium stay stable long enough to measure and apply a useful correction?
  • How many optical modes can the system control, and how quickly can it measure and update that control?
  • What wavelength and geometry does the setup use?
  • Is the desired result aberration correction, focusing at a target, or improved imaging?

Wavefront shaping methods are being studied for OCT, focusing and imaging through scattering media, and multimode-fiber endoscopy. These are research application areas, not evidence that any one method is universally superior or ready for every clinical use. Reviews discuss practical challenges alongside these applications, and do not establish a directly comparable performance benchmark across all three approaches (2020 OCT review; 2023 scattering-media review).
