The word “opaque” needs a qualification: a strongly scattering material may look opaque while allowing a small amount of light through, but a material that blocks all transmitted light cannot produce transmitted speckle behind it.
How scattered light creates speckle
As light enters a disordered material, it can scatter from particles, rough surfaces, or other variations in the material. Some of the scattered light travels along different routes before reaching the same point. Because laser light is coherent, those waves can maintain a stable phase relationship long enough to interfere.
Where the waves arrive in step, they reinforce one another and create a bright grain. Where their phases oppose, they partly or largely cancel and create a dark grain. Many such regions together form the speckle pattern. The scattering provides the different routes; interference among the scattered waves makes the pattern.
An APS Physics synopsis describes the cause this way: “The ‘speckle’ of a laser hitting a surface arises because the coherent light simultaneously takes different paths that reinforce or cancel each other at different places.” Speckle is therefore an interference effect, not a special mark or pigment made by the material.

What “opaque” means for transmitted speckle
In everyday use, “opaque” often describes a material that transmits too little light to see through clearly. Strongly scattering materials can fit that description while still letting a small fraction of light emerge. If that fraction is coherent and detectable, it can form transmitted speckle.
For example, an ESPCI Paris / PSL University account describes an experiment using a partially transparent slab of glycerol with suspended titanium-dioxide particles. An APS synopsis likewise describes a strongly scattering random assembly that reflects almost all incident light while transmitting a small fraction.

That does not mean all opaque materials transmit light. A perfectly blocking material has no transmitted beam to make a pattern behind it; speckle could instead be observed in reflected or otherwise detected scattered light. The apparent contradiction disappears once “opaque” is distinguished from “blocks every photon.”
Why speckle changes with the sample and setup
A speckle pattern is not a fixed signature that looks identical under every viewing condition. Changing the illumination or observation geometry can shift the pattern or alter its grain-by-grain detail.

Illumination angle and diffuser thickness
For a thick diffuser, an Optica study models the material as multiple diffuser layers. As the input angle changes, the pattern can shift as a whole and, beyond that shift, its details begin to decorrelate. The study relates the separation between layers to the angular change needed for decorrelation in the far zone.
A separate Optica study of rough-surface and bulk diffusers finds that input-angle dependence is relatively unimportant near normal incidence but can matter more at larger angles. It reports significant pattern-detail effects for a single plane wave at angles of at least 30 degrees in its studied conditions. That value describes the study, not a universal threshold for every material or instrument.

Wavelength, aperture, and viewing geometry
The apparent grain size depends on the optical system as well as the sample. Relevant factors include wavelength, the illuminated area, the aperture, propagation distance, and whether an imaging system forms the observed pattern. A Caltech thesis on speckle notes that spatial autocorrelation depends on the limiting aperture and that wavelength behavior depends on diffuser roughness. There is no single speckle size that applies to all setups.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can speckle be reduced?
In projection, imaging, and sensing systems, speckle can be reduced by changing the illumination or by making the diffuser behave differently over time. The appropriate approach depends on the application and system constraints; the following reported approaches are not universal fixes.

Make the diffuser change dynamically
Oxford University Innovation describes an electrically driven liquid-crystal device that creates internal motion to blur laser light and reduce speckle, without mechanically shaking a solid diffuser. When assessing this type of approach, relevant considerations include electrical drive, integration needs, whether moving parts are acceptable, and the optical system in which it will be used. The page invites potential commercialization partners; it does not establish a consumer product listing.
Combine multiple illumination tones
An Optica research abstract reports smoothing speckle using multiple narrow spectral lines. Its demonstration used six lines spread over 1500 Å. Those figures describe that study’s setup, not a guaranteed result for another system. Spectral requirements and compatibility with the imaging objective matter when considering this method.
What to use for a simple demonstration
A diffuser plate or sheet can serve as a scattering element in a laser-speckle demonstration. Studies of transmitted speckle from thin and thick diffusers show why that category is relevant, including the Optica work on thick diffusers and the Optica analysis of rough-surface and bulk diffusers. A diffuser is a demonstration aid, not a requirement for understanding the phenomenon.
