Choose an agent framework only after confirming that an agent is useful for the support task. For a fixed, well-defined operation, an ordinary function or controlled workflow may be simpler. For conversational, open-ended work that needs tool use or coordinated decisions, compare frameworks on orchestration, state and recovery, safety controls, integrations, operational ownership, and evaluation. Then test the leading options on the same representative support cases; the available sources do not establish a neutral, controlled winner for customer support.
First decide whether the workflow needs an agent
Start with the job, not a framework feature list. Microsoft’s guidance is direct: “If you can write a function to handle the task, do that instead of using an AI agent.” Its overview distinguishes agents, which can handle open-ended or conversational work and use tools autonomously, from workflows that execute defined steps with more explicit control. A deterministic operation such as looking up an order by a supplied order number may not need an agent; a conversation that must clarify a customer’s intent, consult several sources, and decide whether to escalate may be a better candidate. These are examples, not claims that any one architecture is always correct. Microsoft Agent Framework overview
For a plausible agent task, write down the decisions it must make, the tools it may call, the points where a person must intervene, and what counts as a successful resolution. If the task is mostly known steps, compare a normal function or explicit workflow with an agent before adopting one.
Compare frameworks against the support work you actually do
Use the same questions for every candidate. A framework’s feature list does not by itself show whether it fits your application’s control, data, and support requirements.

| Evaluation area | Questions to answer | What to test |
|---|---|---|
| Task and orchestration | Are cases open-ended, or do they follow known steps? Do you need branching, loops, delegation, or predictable transitions? | Build one representative case both as a plain function or workflow and as an agent. Compare completion and how much control the application retains. Microsoft recommends workflows for defined processes and a regular function when it is sufficient. Source |
| State and recovery | What persists across turns or delays? Who owns storage and cleanup? Can a run pause for approval and resume? | Interrupt a case, delay approval, then resume it. Check that the right context and run state survive. Microsoft documents session-based state and long-running human-in-the-loop workflows; OpenAI describes runtime choices with different state ownership. Microsoft · OpenAI |
| Safety and side effects | Which tools can cancel orders, issue refunds, change accounts, or disclose personal information? Where are authorization, validation, and approval enforced? | Confirm that a sensitive action pauses before execution, that rejection prevents the action, and that approval resumes the intended run. Check controls at each side-effecting tool, not only at the agent level. OpenAI guardrails and human review |
| Integrations and portability | Does the framework support the required model providers, tools, MCP servers, and application runtime? What integration code must your team own? | Map the dependencies your workflow needs and implement at least one real integration. Microsoft lists multiple provider and tool integrations; OpenAI distinguishes a managed Agents API, an application-run SDK, and the more direct Responses API. Microsoft · OpenAI |
| Evaluation and diagnosis | Can you inspect tool calls and handoffs, detect policy failures, and compare changes on repeatable cases? | Save representative cases, inspect end-to-end traces, grade them against explicit criteria, and rerun the set after a change. OpenAI documents trace grading and repeatable dataset evaluation. OpenAI agent evaluations |
| Operational ownership | Who runs orchestration, stores state, manages approvals, and governs third-party data flows? | Draw the path of customer data and tool execution, including provider boundaries. Microsoft advises builders to test quality, reliability, security, and safety and to review what flows to third parties. Microsoft |
Run a fair, support-specific trial
A small, carefully chosen case set is more useful than a broad feature checklist. Use permitted data and include cases that expose both ordinary behavior and failure boundaries:
- A routine information request that should be resolved without changing customer or account state.
- An ambiguous request where the system should ask a clarifying question or escalate rather than guess.
- A case that requires a handoff to a human, including the context the human needs to continue.
- A sensitive action, such as a refund or order cancellation, that must wait for authorized human approval.
For each run, record whether the system resolved the issue correctly, selected the right tool and arguments, escalated when appropriate, followed policy, and recovered correctly after interruption. Include latency and cost only if your team measures them under the same conditions for each candidate; no support-workflow benchmark in the sources establishes comparative values.
- Freeze the test setup. Keep the model, prompt, tool definitions, permissions, and case data fixed while comparing framework choices. Record any unavoidable differences rather than treating them as framework results.
- Run the same cases through each design. Include the plain function or explicit workflow where practical, not just competing agent frameworks.
- Inspect traces, not only final answers. Look for incorrect tool selection, unsupported claims, missed escalation, unsafe arguments, and lost context at handoff.
- Test approval and recovery deliberately. Verify that a sensitive tool has not executed before approval, and that resuming or rejecting the action leads to the expected outcome.
- Repeat after changes. Use a saved dataset and explicit grading criteria to detect regressions after prompt, tool, model, or framework changes. OpenAI documents trace grading and repeatable evaluation runs. OpenAI agent evaluations
This is a practical evaluation method synthesized from official evaluation and approval guidance, not a published benchmark protocol. It helps teams compare their own workload; it does not support a universal performance ranking.

Microsoft’s overview describes agents that use tools and MCP servers, provider integrations including Microsoft Foundry, Anthropic, Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, and Ollama, and functional or graph-based workflows. It also documents session-based state, middleware, telemetry, and human-in-the-loop scenarios. That makes it a candidate to examine when a team wants both agent patterns and explicit workflow options. Microsoft says its Go framework is in public preview on the overview page accessed for this article; confirm current status before depending on it. The documentation also assigns application builders responsibility for testing, suitable safety mitigations, and management of third-party data and permissions. Microsoft Agent Framework overview
OpenAI Agents SDK and runtime options
OpenAI presents three routes for building agentic applications: a managed Agents API, an Agents SDK that runs in the application, and the Responses API for more direct model integration. Its documentation compares where these options run, integration effort, state ownership, and tool execution. The SDK leaves the application in control of deployment, storage, approvals, and runtime integration, so it may suit teams that want to own those boundaries. Compare the relevant runtime model with your deployment and state requirements rather than assuming that the options have identical hosting or operational responsibilities. LangGraph
LangGraph is described in LangChain’s 2026 framework landscape article as an agent runtime for complex agents that require precision. LangChain’s own overview is the primary documentation to consult for its concepts and implementation details. The landscape article is vendor-authored and describes a qualitative review of documentation, repositories, and community feedback, not a controlled comparison of frameworks on support workloads. Treat it as one perspective for shortlist building, not independent evidence that LangGraph—or any other option—will perform best for your cases. Set approval boundaries around customer-impacting actions
Separate actions the agent may take automatically from those that must stop for review. OpenAI’s guidance describes automatic input, output, and tool guardrails as distinct from human review before sensitive side effects. In its SDK pattern, a tool configured to require approval interrupts the run rather than executing; the application receives resumable state, approves or rejects the action, and resumes the run. The application still needs to implement its policies and tool-level checks. OpenAI guardrails and human review
For support systems, treat refunds, cancellations, account changes, and disclosure of personal data as risk classes to assess. They are examples, not a claim that a framework supplies complete business policy. Put authorization and argument validation close to every side-effecting tool, keep an audit record, define what happens on failure, and ensure a human can take over. In a multi-agent workflow, do not assume an agent-level check automatically protects every tool call.

What the available comparisons can and cannot establish
The cited materials document framework capabilities and vendor guidance, but do not provide a neutral, controlled head-to-head test of these frameworks on customer-support workflows. LangChain’s 2026 landscape comparison is qualitative and vendor-authored. No independently sourced support-performance statistic or benchmark is established here, so there is no defensible universal winner to name.
Implementation details also change. Before committing, confirm current language support, integration status, licensing, and service terms in the relevant primary documentation. The cited materials do not establish comparable prices, and this guide does not infer them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an LLM agent framework, and how is it different from an AI model?
A model generates responses or makes decisions from input. An agent framework supplies application-level building blocks for coordinating model calls with tools, state, workflow control, and related runtime behavior. The model and framework are separate parts of a system.

Does an agent framework enforce my company’s refund or privacy policy automatically?
No. Framework controls can support approvals and checks, but the application owner must define and implement authorization, validation, audit, data-boundary, and escalation policies at the relevant tools and workflows.
Is a vendor’s framework comparison enough to choose one for customer support?
No. Vendor documentation can describe capabilities, but the cited comparisons do not establish a neutral, controlled support-workflow winner. Use the same representative cases and evaluation criteria for the designs you shortlist.
