Protecting your privacy with an AI wearable starts with finding out what it collects, where that data is processed, and what happens to it afterward. Review the device and app settings before enabling optional features, limit unnecessary permissions, check retention and deletion controls, and make recording clear to people nearby. The details vary by product, so do not assume one brand’s controls or privacy practices apply to another.

Start by mapping what the wearable can collect

AI wearables can combine several data sources, but a particular device may use only some of them. Depending on the product and features you enable, these can include images or audio from a camera or microphone, voice inputs, location, biometrics, or information associated with an account. A feature being described as “AI” does not tell you by itself what data it needs or where processing happens.

Before setup, read the current device privacy notice and companion-app settings. For each feature you plan to use, look for what it collects, whether processing takes place on the wearable or in a cloud service, whether a third party is involved, and whether the feature can be used without optional collection or sharing. The Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner’s guidance on wearables highlights the distinction between local processing and data sent to a manufacturer’s or another provider’s cloud.

Limit collection through permissions and feature choices

Grant only the access needed for the functions you actually want. Check permissions in both the wearable’s settings and its companion app; depending on your phone and software version, permission names and menus may differ. Revisit them after adding features or updating the app.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Refuse or revoke access that is not necessary for the functions you use. The Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner advises: “Unnecessary access should always be refused or revoked in the settings.”
  • Turn off optional AI, voice, recognition, or sharing features if you are not comfortable with their data use. Then check the product documentation to confirm what the setting stops; switching off a feature may not disable unrelated collection or account processing.
  • Check whether voice activation or other always-ready functions can be disabled, and what happens to voice inputs after a request is processed.
  • Keep the wearable and its companion app up to date. The Swiss authority identifies long-term security updates and prompt remediation of vulnerabilities as important manufacturer practices.

Find out what leaves the device and how long it stays

Local processing and cloud processing have different privacy implications. A feature that works on-device may not need the same data transfer as one that relies on a vendor’s cloud or an outside service. Ask what information leaves the wearable, where it is sent, who can access it, and which terms apply. Do not infer that all functions on a single device are processed in the same place.

Look for clear answers about retention, account access, and deletion. Check whether the service offers a way to download your data, how to delete recordings or transcripts, and whether deletion applies to the device, the app, the account, or cloud-held copies. The FTC’s materials on voice-data practices describe concerns about retention, deletion, and access to sensitive recordings; its guidance recommends minimizing data and deleting it when there is no longer a legitimate need. A deletion control’s effect depends on the service, so read its explanation rather than assuming that removing an item from one screen removes every copy.

Give biometrics and recognition features extra scrutiny

Biometric information can be especially sensitive. If a wearable offers biometric measurement or recognition, check what it processes, whether the feature is optional, where the resulting information is stored, and whether you can delete it. The FTC has warned that biometric technologies can raise privacy and security concerns as well as risks of bias and discrimination. Samuel Levine, then Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said in the agency’s May 2023 announcement: “In recent years, biometric surveillance has grown more sophisticated and pervasive, posing new threats to privacy and civil rights.”

Do not treat a feature label as a complete explanation of its data use. If documentation does not explain what is captured or how to disable or remove it, consider leaving the feature off.

Make recording visible and considerate

Smart glasses and other wearable cameras or microphones can capture people who did not choose to use the device. Treat bystander privacy as part of your own setup and use: check how the device signals recording, do not cover or defeat its indicators, and tell people when recording is happening where appropriate. Avoid recording in sensitive settings, and check local rules before recording or sharing another person’s image or voice.

Meta’s responsible-innovation FAQ describes one product-specific example: it says the Meta AI app lets users set preferences for captures, voice, notifications, and information shared with Meta. Meta also says photos and videos remain on the glasses until the user moves them to a phone using the app, and that taking photos or recording video activates notification and capture LEDs. Those statements describe Meta’s AI glasses, not a standard shared by all wearables; check the current product documentation for the device you use.

Indicator lights can help people notice capture, but they do not by themselves settle whether recording is appropriate. In its 2024 report on 2023 activity, Ireland’s Data Protection Commission said its historical engagement with Meta about Ray-Ban smart glasses included a recommendation to increase the external-facing privacy LED; the report says the LED size was more than doubled. That historical design detail is not proof that every current model has the same indicator or that an indicator alone resolves bystander privacy concerns.

Apply the rules that fit your location and use

Privacy requirements depend on where you are, what you record, and how you use or share the data. The European Data Protection Board identifies personal data as central to technologies including AI, facial recognition, connected vehicles, and the Internet of Things, and treats privacy by design and by default as relevant considerations. That is useful context, not a substitute for checking the law that applies to your situation.

Rules can be specific to a jurisdiction and type of recording. For example, the Philippines National Privacy Commission announced Circular No. 2025-01 for personal data collected using body-worn cameras and similar recording devices. Its announcement says the circular took effect on 10 June 2025 and addresses matters including lawful processing, security, storage, access controls, retention, notices, and people who record or publish others. It does not establish the rules that apply in other countries.

Do not assume that HIPAA automatically covers a consumer wearable or its companion service. FTC guidance on mobile health apps discusses HIPAA and the FTC Health Breach Notification Rule in relation to covered businesses and health apps; whether a particular wearable service is covered depends on the entity and service involved.

A privacy check before you use a feature

  1. Read the current privacy notice and app settings for the device and feature.
  2. Identify the permissions the feature needs, then deny or revoke access you do not need.
  3. Check whether processing is on-device, cloud-based, or handled by another provider.
  4. Review voice, AI, recognition, capture, and sharing controls; leave optional features disabled if their data use is unacceptable to you.
  5. Find the retention, download, and deletion controls, and check what deletion actually removes.
  6. Learn how recording is signaled, keep indicators unobstructed, and consider the people and setting before capturing or sharing.
  7. Keep the wearable and companion app current, and check local rules for the recording or sharing you intend to do.
