Cadence would provide design tools and expand support for HP computing platforms; HP would use Cadence tools in its research and development groups and serve as a platform partner. The announcement described plans and expected benefits, not measured results.
What did Cadence and HP agree to do?
The companies announced the alliance on July 10, 2000, in San Jose and Palo Alto, California. The EE Times report carrying the announcement was published July 17, 2000. Their stated business purpose was to combine their research and development capabilities to jointly develop, market, and sell EDA solutions for customers worldwide.
The partnership was reciprocal: Cadence was the EDA software provider and would extend platform support, while HP was both a computing-platform partner and a planned major internal user of Cadence tools. The announcement said the companies expected their work to address increasing engineering demands, but did not report subsequent outcomes.
What each company planned to contribute
Cadence: tools, platform support, and infrastructure
- Cadence said it would adopt HP-UX as a preferred product-development and support operating system.
- It planned to support HP-UX on Intel’s 64-bit IA-64 architecture, which the report describes as jointly developed by HP and Intel.
- Cadence planned to increase its use of HP workstations and servers for verification and quality assurance.
- It planned engineering support to make applications available for alpha, beta, and first-customer shipments on HP-UX and HP Precision Architecture (PA)-RISC platforms at the same time as first availability on other UNIX platforms.
HP: platform partnership and internal adoption
- HP selected Cadence as a preferred EDA tools provider for its R&D groups, with particular emphasis on Cadence SP&R.
- HP planned to expand use of SP&R and other Cadence design tools across its R&D organizations worldwide, for work on computing, printing, and digital-imaging products.
What were SP&R, HP-UX, and IA-64?
In the announcement, SP&R means synthesis/place-and-route technology: tools used in the electronic-design process to synthesize a design and arrange and route its components. It was the specific Cadence tool area singled out in HP’s selection, alongside other Cadence design tools.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
HP-UX was HP’s UNIX operating system. IA-64 was Intel’s 64-bit architecture, described in the report as jointly developed with HP. The announcement connected these by saying Cadence would support the HP-UX environment on IA-64. It separately named HP-UX and HP PA-RISC platforms in its plan for simultaneous application availability; these are distinct platform references, not interchangeable names.
What the announcement does—and does not—establish
The EE Times account records company plans and executive expectations. It does not verify that every planned deployment or release-support commitment was later completed, nor does it provide commercial terms, named workstation or server models, or release dates beyond the stated simultaneous-availability plan.

Executives presented the alliance as a response to engineering needs. HP president and CEO Carly Fiorina said, “Cadence and HP will work together to optimize solutions that meet the increasing engineering demands for greater performance and next-generation architectures.” Cadence president and CEO Ray Bingham said, “Customer satisfaction is what drives us also to go beyond products and create new business models and partnerships.” HP Computing Systems president Duane Zitzner said HP would more broadly proliferate Cadence technology in support of HP computing, printing, and digital-imaging products. These statements explain the companies’ rationale; the report supplies no attributable statistics or measured results demonstrating improved performance, quality, or time-to-market.
