There is no single check that proves a crypto presale is legitimate. Before sending money, independently verify the project’s identity and token contract, read what the offering actually promises, and check whether the people and claims can be substantiated. Guaranteed returns, pressure to act quickly, unsolicited pitches, or unclear terms are reasons to stop—not proof by themselves, but serious warning signs.

Use this verification sequence before sending funds

  1. Ignore the countdown. Pause if a promoter says a bonus is expiring, the sale is almost full, or you must act immediately. Urgency and unsolicited pitches are recognized warning signs; a deadline does not replace due diligence. The CFTC’s digital asset fraud guidance describes these tactics.
  2. Find the project independently. Reach the project’s site using a domain you can verify independently or a bookmark you already trust. Do not rely on a link, QR code, or contact details supplied only by the promoter; spoofed pages can imitate genuine projects.
  3. Match the chain and contract address. Compare the address on the independently located project site with the address shown by an explorer for the relevant blockchain. Names, tickers, logos, and social profiles are not unique identifiers. Ethereum.org’s guide to identifying scam tokens recommends checking the contract address.
  4. Read the offering terms. Find out what rights the token carries, what it is intended to do, how tokens are distributed, what sale conditions apply, and how proceeds will be used. Check whether the documents explain risks, fees, and any stated way to recover funds. Do not assume rights or protections that are not written down. The CFTC token advisory says these details should be clear in the business plan, white paper, or development plan.
  5. Verify the responsible people and entities. Check names, roles, company claims, partners, and any licensing or registration claims against independent records and relevant regulators. For US securities-related questions, consult current SEC information and the appropriate state regulator. Registration may matter to legal questions, but it is not a guarantee against fraud.
  6. Assess on-chain information as evidence, not a verdict. Contract history, holder distribution, and liquidity can help describe what is visible on a blockchain. They cannot establish that promoters’ off-chain claims are true, that management is honest, or that investors will receive what was promised.
  7. Walk away if material questions remain unanswered. If you cannot independently confirm important claims or understand the terms, do not send funds. A polished presentation does not make an unclear offer safer.

Red flags and what they mean

  • Guaranteed high returns or “no risk” claims: The SEC and CFTC warn that all investments carry risk and identify guaranteed or risk-free returns as fraud warning signs. Their 2019 investor alert used “20-50%” as an example of a promised return in a warning about fraudulent digital-asset trading websites; it is not a measured rate, safe threshold, or typical outcome. See the SEC and CFTC investor alert.
  • Pressure to act now: A countdown, expiring bonus, or claim that there is no time to research is a reason to pause. Urgency can be used to discourage independent checks.
  • Unsolicited messages or social-media pitches: A direct message, group-chat consensus, popular account, or screenshot of gains is not verification. The SEC also outlines ways fraudsters may lure people into crypto-asset securities scams in its investor alert, published May 29, 2024 and last reviewed September 19, 2024.
  • Confusing or jargon-heavy explanations: You should be able to explain what is being sold, what rights come with the token, and what the project says it will do with the proceeds. If the explanation is evasive or inconsistent, do not fill in the gaps with assumptions.
  • Unverifiable names or registration claims: Check the individuals and organizations independently. A claimed registration or affiliation should be confirmed through the relevant source, not accepted from a promoter’s screenshot or website.
  • A further payment to unlock returns or recover funds: Do not pay a purported tax, release fee, or advance charge based solely on a promoter’s demand. The CFTC identifies additional payment demands as a fraud pattern.

What a contract address and liquidity check can—and cannot—tell you

A contract address identifies a particular token on a particular blockchain, helping distinguish it from another token with a similar name. Check both the address and the chain. A matching address supports the conclusion that you have found the same on-chain token, but it does not authenticate claims about the team, reserves, partnerships, audits, future utility, or use of proceeds.

A liquidity pool can show that trading is possible under current conditions. It does not prove that the pool will remain liquid, that a presale was fair, or that the project is honest. Ethereum.org notes that there is no authoritative source that establishes token legitimacy across decentralized networks. Treat liquidity as one clue, not a certification.

Can a white paper, audit, or registration prove a presale is safe?

No. A white paper can explain the proposed token and offering, but its existence does not validate its claims. Read it for specific rights, sale terms, risks, and use of proceeds, then compare those statements with independent evidence. An audit may concern particular technical issues, but the information here does not establish that an audit proves a project’s honesty or investment safety. Likewise, registration status may be relevant to legal questions but is not a safety certification.

Whether a token is a security depends on the facts and circumstances. The CFTC advisory discusses that conditional analysis and advises buyers to ask whether an offering is registered with the SEC. That guidance does not classify every token or determine the law for every jurisdiction. For a specific offer, check current regulator records and seek qualified legal advice where appropriate.

Compare projects by evidence, not by a single score

There is no approved universal score for presales. Compare the evidence across these areas; a strong showing in one does not cancel a serious failure in another.

What to compare Evidence to look for What a gap means
People and entities Named individuals, roles, companies, partners, and claims that can be independently checked. You cannot reliably establish who is responsible or substantiate the claimed affiliations.
Token identity The contract address and blockchain match between the independently found project site and the relevant explorer. A matching name or logo alone does not tell you which token you are dealing with.
Rights and function Plain-language terms describing what the token does and what rights, if any, it carries. Do not infer benefits, ownership, or protections that the terms do not state.
Sale terms and use of proceeds Clear distribution and sale conditions, stated use of funds, risks, and any described recovery route. You lack essential information for understanding what is being offered and how funds may be used.
Claims and registrations Material claims and registration statements that can be checked against independent records or relevant regulators. The claim remains unverified; a promoter’s assertion is not confirmation.
Sales tactics Time to review the offer without guaranteed returns, pressure, or unsolicited approaches. Return promises and urgency are warning signs that warrant extra caution.
On-chain activity Address, contract history, holder distribution, or liquidity interpreted within its limits. These observations do not prove honest management, truthful off-chain claims, or future market conditions.

If you have already sent funds

  1. Stop using links, phone numbers, or contact channels supplied by the promoter.
  2. Preserve messages, account details, and transaction information, including relevant wallet addresses and transaction identifiers.
  3. Contact the exchange, platform, or wallet provider through contact details you verify independently, where relevant.
  4. Report suspected fraud to the appropriate regulator or law-enforcement authority. The CFTC’s digital asset fraud guidance describes reporting routes and warns about follow-on payment demands.
  5. Do not send another payment to release supposed gains or recover principal. Recovery of cryptocurrency sent to a scammer may be difficult.

What enforcement examples do—and do not—show

On May 20, 2025, the SEC announced charges against Unicoin and executives. The SEC’s announcement said its complaint alleged the offering raised more than $100 million from thousands of investors, and alleged that executives made fictitious promises about backing tokens with real-world assets. Those are allegations in a charging announcement, not a general measure of presale fraud or, by themselves, a final adjudicated finding. See the SEC’s May 20, 2025 release.
