A PDF that looks fine on screen is not automatically ready for printing: trim size, margins, bleed, image quality, and binding all affect the result.
Choose where and how the book will be printed
Decide whether you need a file for digital sharing, a home-printed booklet, or a print-on-demand book. The destination determines page dimensions, margins, color and file requirements. For a print service, choose its binding and trim size—the finished page width and height—before designing the pages. If artwork will reach the cut edge, confirm whether the service requires bleed.
Specifications differ between providers. Amazon KDP’s rules below are one concrete example, not universal print standards. Check the live requirements and download the template for your chosen product before laying out the book.
Review the story and illustrations before layout
AI-generated text and images still need editorial review. Read the story for age suitability, consistency, spelling, punctuation, and page-turn flow. Inspect each illustration for character mismatches, stray text, artifacts, or details that may be unclear at the size they will appear in print. Keep the text and image files editable until the layout is settled.

Print export cannot restore detail missing from a low-resolution source image. Judge each illustration at its actual placed size, and replace or revise images that look soft or unclear. Canva likewise notes that poor-quality source images can remain blurry in a print export: Canva’s guidance on blurry downloaded designs.
Lay out pages with trim, safe areas, and bleed in mind
Create a page canvas using the chosen trim dimensions and arrange the words and artwork one page at a time. Keep text, logos, and essential details inside the safe area so they are not lost to trimming or binding. If a background or illustration is meant to run to the edge, extend it into the bleed area; do not enlarge every page edge by guesswork. KDP example: trim size and bleed
KDP defines trim size as the finished page dimensions and says 6 × 9 inches is the most common U.S. book size; other sizes are available. For a full-bleed interior, KDP specifies 0.125 inches (3.2 mm) beyond trim at the top, bottom, and outside edge. Its example for a 6 × 9-inch book uses a PDF page size of 6.125 × 9.25 inches. The inside or gutter edge is treated differently, so use the selected KDP layout or template rather than adding bleed blindly on all sides. See KDP’s trim size, bleed, and margin specifications.
KDP example: minimum margins
KDP’s published minimum outside margins are 0.25 inches for a no-bleed interior and 0.375 inches for a bleed interior. Its minimum gutter margin depends on page count:

These are KDP requirements, not a substitute for checking another printer’s rules. KDP also says all covers require bleed, while an interior can be set up with or without it.
Export a print-oriented PDF
In Canva, the documented download route is Share → Download → PDF Print. Canva describes PDF Print as a 300 dpi export and lists options for bleed, crop marks, and color profile. Select crop marks and bleed only when the destination requires them, and use the print provider’s specifications rather than assuming the editor’s defaults are correct. Canva warns that printed colors may differ from screen colors; its download file type guide describes PDF Print and its options.

Export controls can vary by application, account, or plan. For KDP, an interior with bleed must be submitted as PDF. KDP accepts PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, HTML, and TXT for an interior without bleed, and says it converts those files to PDF before printing. Its manuscript guidance says files larger than 650 MB fail conversion. See KDP’s manuscript file requirements.

- Page order, orientation, and total page count.
- Text legibility, font rendering, and clipping near page edges or the gutter.
- Image sharpness at the size shown on the page.
- Whether edge-to-edge artwork reaches into bleed without placing essential content there.
If printing through KDP, upload the file and inspect it in Print Previewer. When the preview identifies a formatting problem, KDP advises correcting the original document, generating a new PDF, and uploading the revision; see KDP’s formatting-issue guidance. A small home print can help you assess a draft’s readability and page turns, but it does not replace the provider’s preview or preflight check.
Decide whether you also need a digital edition
A print interior has fixed physical dimensions and may include bleed and binding allowances. A digital reading version can benefit from different pagination, navigation, and accessibility choices. If the book will be read both on screens and in print, consider making separate layouts rather than treating the print PDF as the ideal format for both.
