Choose a portable sump pump by matching its delivered flow at your home’s actual lift and discharge setup to the water it must handle—not by its headline maximum gallons-per-hour rating. Before buying, measure the vertical rise and pipe run, check that the pump fits the sump, confirm power and backup arrangements, and make sure the discharge will drain safely away from the foundation.
What size sump pump do you need?
There is no responsible universal gallons-per-hour (GPH) answer for an unspecified home. The right capacity depends on how much water enters the sump, how high and far the pump must move it, and the resistance created by pipe length, diameter, and fittings. FEMA’s residential retrofit guidance identifies pump capacity, head (vertical lift), and electrical power as selection factors; its floodproofing guidance also accounts for piping friction and switch type. See FEMA P-259 residential retrofit guidance and FEMA P-936 floodproofing guidance.
Start with the job: routine seepage control and emergency water removal are different demands. If you cannot estimate the inflow or the installation is complex, have a licensed plumbing professional assess the site rather than choosing a pump from a generic sizing chart.

Measure the installation before comparing pumps
Record the conditions the pump will actually face. These measurements let you compare a manufacturer’s flow data with your installation rather than relying on a maximum rating that may apply only at a lower lift or under other conditions.

- Vertical lift: Measure the height from the pump’s location in the sump to the point where water exits the discharge line. This is the pump head the system must overcome.
- Discharge route: Note pipe or hose diameter, approximate length, fittings, bends, and the final outlet location. Friction from the route reduces delivered flow.
- Sump dimensions: Measure the pit’s inside diameter and depth, and allow room for the pump and its float switch to move without obstruction.
- Water source and severity: Identify whether the issue is recurring seepage, a rising water table, or water entering during a flood. These situations do not imply the same flow requirement.
- Power and backup: Check available electrical supply and plan how the system will operate if utility power fails.
Compare flow at the required lift, not the maximum GPH
Look for the manufacturer’s flow-at-lift table or curve and compare output at the vertical rise you measured. Then account for the actual discharge piping and fittings, which add resistance. A published maximum GPH figure on its own does not establish that the pump will deliver that flow in your home. Pentair’s Flotec FPCC5030 product specifications illustrate why the lift-specific data matters.
For that model only, Pentair lists maximum flow of 4,200 GPH for the primary pump and 2,700 GPH for the backup pump. At a 10-foot lift, the listed figures are 3,000 GPH primary and 1,260 GPH backup. These are manufacturer specifications for the FPCC5030, not a sizing recommendation for another home or pump.

Choose a pump type and switch that suit the sump
Portable sump pumps are commonly submersible or pedestal designs. FEMA’s residential retrofit guidance prefers submersible pumps because they continue operating if floodwater rises above the pump. Treat this as general guidance, not proof that any portable model is appropriate for every sump or flood condition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the exact pump’s dimensions, placement instructions, and float-switch clearance. FEMA’s floodproofing guidance discusses diaphragm, vertical-action float, tethered-float, and electronic free-float switches. It emphasizes understanding switch reliability and strengths; the guidance does not establish one switch type as universally best.

Check physical fit, outlet, and electrical requirements
Confirm the pump will sit securely in the pit and that its float can travel freely through the operating range. Match the pump’s discharge connection to the existing pipe or a compatible adapter or hose, and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Do not assume a specification from one model is a general minimum: for example, Pentair lists the Flotec FPCC5030 as requiring a 14-inch minimum sump diameter and 18-inch minimum depth, with a 1½-inch discharge. Those dimensions apply to that model alone.
Verify the electrical requirements and whether the existing circuit is suitable. The Government of Canada recommends a licensed plumbing professional to assess whether a sump pump is appropriate and install it; a licensed electrician may be needed for a dedicated circuit. Its guidance is available at Government of Canada: sump pumps.

Plan for power outages and pump failure
A pump that depends on household electricity may stop during an outage—the moment a storm may make it most needed. NFIP recommends a working sump pump and water alarm, and a battery-operated backup pump in case power goes out. The guidance appears in NFIP / FloodSmart floodproofing guidance.

Route discharge water away from the foundation
The discharge outlet matters as much as the pump: water that drains back toward the house can undermine the purpose of pumping. The Government of Canada advises directing discharge at least 1.5 m (5 ft.) from the foundation if possible, toward an area with good drainage. A discharge hose can extend a short pipe where appropriate, but check that its connection fits the pump and that the route does not create a drainage, freezing, or local-code problem. Follow local rules and site conditions when choosing the outlet.
Know what a sump pump cannot guarantee
A sump pump is one part of a water-management plan, not a promise of whole-home flood protection. FEMA notes that a sump system may be overwhelmed by high water tables. Flooding can also exceed a pump’s capacity or interrupt its power. Use the pump for the task and conditions its manufacturer specifies, and consider professional assessment if water is entering faster than the system can remove it.
