An ODI (One-Day International) gives each team up to 50 overs to bat; a T20 International (T20I) gives each team up to 20. Both normally have one innings per side, but T20 is shorter, with the ICC saying a T20I usually takes about three hours. Bowling limits and fielding-restriction phases also differ.
What do ODI and T20 mean?
ODI stands for One-Day International, and T20 means Twenty20. In international cricket, the format is called a T20 International, or T20I. The ICC’s overview of cricket’s formats describes both as limited-overs formats: each side bats in one innings, subject to the format’s overs limit.
ODI vs. T20I: the main differences
| Feature | ODI | T20I |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | One-Day International | Twenty20 International |
| Innings | One per side | One per side |
| Maximum overs per side | 50 | 20 |
| Maximum overs for one bowler in a full innings | 10 | 4 |
| Fielding restrictions | Three phases across the innings | Six-over powerplay, then non-powerplay overs |
| Typical match span | Scheduled as a one-day match; actual finish time varies | The ICC says a match usually takes about three hours |
The overs and bowling limits in this table are from the ICC men’s standard playing conditions effective July 2025: ICC format overview, Men’s ODI conditions and Men’s T20I conditions. The duration is the ICC’s general description, not a guaranteed finish time.
Why does T20 feel faster?
A T20I gives each batting side 20 overs rather than an ODI’s 50. As a result, each over makes up a larger share of the innings, leaving less time to build a score gradually. That tends to encourage earlier attacking play and quicker scoring decisions. An ODI offers more overs in which to pace an innings. These are tendencies created by the format limits, not rules requiring a particular batting strategy.

Fielding restrictions add another difference in rhythm. Under standard uninterrupted men’s conditions, an ODI divides its restrictions into three phases: no more than two fielders may be outside the restriction area in overs 1–10, four in overs 11–40, and five in overs 41–50. In a men’s T20I, no more than two may be outside during the six-over powerplay; up to five may be outside in the remaining overs. These restrictions shape where fielders can be placed, but they do not dictate how a batter must play.
What happens if the match is interrupted?
Rain or another interruption can reduce the overs available, so a shortened ODI or T20I may not use the full 50- or 20-over limit. The playing conditions provide arrangements for reduced-over matches. Under the cited men’s T20I conditions, a match normally needs at least five overs bowled to the team batting second to constitute a match, unless a result has already been reached. The applicable competition rules and playing conditions govern the details.

Which format should a new viewer choose?
- Choose T20I if you want the shorter format: the ICC says it usually takes about three hours, and the 20-over limit makes the innings more compressed.
- Choose ODI if you want a longer contest, with up to 50 overs per side and more room for a team to pace its innings.
The exact playing-condition examples above are from standard men’s international rules. The ICC lists separate men’s and women’s playing-condition documents, and conditions can vary by competition or change over time. Consult the relevant ICC playing-conditions document for a specific match.
