In a common approach, an AI compares candidate responses, those comparisons train a preference model, and reinforcement learning optimizes the policy against that model. RLAIF describes where feedback comes from—not one fixed training recipe. A documented direct-RLAIF variant instead uses language-model-generated rewards during reinforcement learning without training a separate reward model.
What is RLAIF?
RLAIF stands for reinforcement learning from AI feedback. Rather than relying exclusively on people to compare model outputs, the method uses an AI evaluator to provide feedback that can shape a model’s behavior. The evaluator may judge which of two responses better follows a task, rubric, or written principles.
Anthropic’s December 2022 description of its method states: “We then train with RL using the preference model as the reward signal, i.e. we use ‘RL from AI Feedback’ (RLAIF).” Anthropic’s summary of Constitutional AI uses the term for the reinforcement-learning phase that uses an AI-derived preference model as its reward signal.
How does reinforcement learning from AI feedback work?
A typical preference-model pipeline turns AI judgments into training data before using reinforcement learning. The exact evaluator, instructions, data mixture, and policy-optimization method can vary.

- Provide prompts and candidate responses. The system generates responses to prompts that reflect the behavior being trained.
- Ask an AI evaluator to judge them. The evaluator compares responses, often under a written rubric or principles, and produces preference labels.
- Train a preference or reward model. The comparisons provide examples for a model that estimates which responses are preferable.
- Optimize the policy. Reinforcement learning trains the target model to earn higher reward according to that learned model.
This is a common design, not a requirement that defines every RLAIF implementation. Feedback may be mixed with human labels, and a variant may skip the separate preference-model step.
Is Constitutional AI the same as RLAIF?
No. Constitutional AI (CAI) is a broader, principles-guided training recipe; RLAIF is a description of using AI-produced feedback. CAI’s RL phase is an example of RLAIF, but the terms are not interchangeable.

Constitutional AI’s two stages
- Supervised stage: A model critiques and revises responses according to written principles. The revised responses are then used for supervised fine-tuning.
- Reinforcement-learning stage: A model compares responses according to principles. The resulting preferences train a preference model, which supplies the reward signal for RL.
The original Constitutional AI experiments did not eliminate all human input: helpfulness labels remained human-provided while AI feedback replaced human harmlessness comparisons. The principles-guided recipe is one way to structure AI feedback, not a requirement for RLAIF generally. See the Constitutional AI paper for methodological details.
How is RLAIF different from RLHF?
The central distinction is the source of feedback: RLHF uses human feedback, while RLAIF uses AI-generated feedback. That shorthand does not determine the rest of the training pipeline. A meaningful comparison should specify how feedback is collected and represented, whether a separate reward model is trained, where humans contribute elsewhere, how the policy is optimized, and which tasks and evaluations are involved.

These are broad distinctions, not a guarantee that any two systems labeled RLAIF and RLHF differ only in who labels examples. To interpret a result, check the evaluator, instructions, data, optimization method, benchmark, and evaluation population.
Does RLAIF need a reward model?
No. The common approach trains a preference model from AI comparisons and then uses it as the reward signal. Lee et al. (2024) also describe direct-RLAIF, which uses rewards from an off-the-shelf language model during RL rather than training a separate reward model. In their experiments, direct-RLAIF outperformed canonical RLAIF; that result is specific to the paper’s tested setups, not a universal ranking of methods. See Lee et al.’s ICML 2024 paper.

What does published evidence say about RLAIF’s performance?
Lee et al. (2024) report that RLAIF achieved performance comparable to RLHF in their experiments on summarization, helpful dialogue generation, and harmless dialogue generation. They also report that RLAIF beat a supervised fine-tuning baseline when the AI labeler was the same size as the policy or came from the same initial checkpoint.
These findings show that AI feedback can be effective in the settings studied; they do not establish that every RLAIF system matches RLHF or that AI feedback is universally better. Performance claims should stay attached to the particular models, tasks, and evaluation used in each study.

What are RLAIF’s benefits and limitations?
Potential benefit: less human preference labeling
AI evaluators can generate feedback without collecting a human preference label for every comparison, which may help scale feedback generation. But people still shape the objective through task definitions, feedback prompts, principles or rubrics, model selection, and evaluation. In the Constitutional AI experiments, human feedback also remained part of helpfulness training.
Limitation: AI judgments can be wrong
An AI evaluator’s preference is not ground truth. In the Constitutional AI paper, the authors report that critiques were sometimes reasonable but often inaccurate or overstated. They also describe calibration problems with confident multiple-choice judgments and, in one experimental setup, clamping probabilities to a 40–60 percent range to improve robustness. That is a paper-specific response to an observed issue, not a general prescription for every evaluator.
Evaluate the trained behavior, not just the feedback pipeline
A model can optimize the reward it was given without reliably meeting the intended objective. Assess the resulting behavior independently, and report the evaluation tasks and evaluators so readers can understand what a claimed improvement covers.
