PS Remote Play streams a game running on your PS5 or PS4 to another supported device; a PS5 emulator attempts to run PlayStation 5 software on a computer. Remote Play therefore requires a console and a suitable network connection. Emulation does not stream from your console, but whether it works depends on the particular game, emulator build and computer.
How the two options differ
| Question | PS Remote Play | PS5 emulation |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the game run? | On a PS5 or PS4 console; the console streams it to your device. | On a computer through emulator software. |
| What do you need? | A PS5 or PS4, a supported destination device, the free Remote Play app and a compatible game. PlayStation Portal requires a PS5. | A computer and an emulator build that supports the specific game; compatibility is changing. |
| What can limit play? | Network quality, device and game compatibility, and the console setup. | Per-game compatibility and the emulator build. A game booting does not mean it is playable. |
| What is established about network needs? | PlayStation requires broadband of at least 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. | The cited sources do not establish a universal network requirement for emulation. |
Can you play PS5 games on a phone or PC without a PS5?
Not through Remote Play. PlayStation requires a PS5 or PS4 console to run the game, while your phone, tablet or computer acts as the screen and control device. A PlayStation Portal is specifically for streaming from a PS5 and is not compatible with PS4. See PlayStation Remote Play and PlayStation Portal compatibility for current device and setup details.
Emulation is a separate possibility: it aims to execute console software on a computer rather than receive a stream from a console. But it is not a dependable way to play any PS5 game you choose. Check the current compatibility information for the exact game and emulator build before relying on it.
What Remote Play requires
- A console: A PS5 or PS4 is required. Enable Remote Play on the console; using it while the console is in rest mode also requires the relevant network-related rest-mode settings.
- A compatible destination: PlayStation lists compatible computers, phones, tablets, supported Android TV devices, other PlayStation consoles and Portal. Support depends on the device and its software.
- A network connection: PlayStation says broadband of at least 5 Mbps is required and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are published requirements and guidance, not a guarantee of stream quality; network conditions can affect the experience.
- A supported game and controls: A compatible game and the free Remote Play app are required. PlayStation lists DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4 among controller options; mobile devices can also use touch controls. Controller support varies by device.
Some games are excluded, including titles that require a VR headset or extra peripherals beyond the listed controllers, and games that must be streamed through a PS Plus Premium membership. Check the specific game rather than assuming every title in a library will work. Mobile data use counts against your allowance. The current restrictions and supported devices are listed on PlayStation’s Remote Play page.

What PS5 emulation can do today
The KytyPS5 project describes its emulator as actively developed for Windows and Linux, with experimental macOS support. Its project status says it can boot 2D games and a selection of 3D games, and cautions that behavior can change significantly between builds. These are the project’s own status claims, not independent testing. The project’s repository is the place to check current information.
Booting is not the same as being playable
- Booting: The emulator starts or loads the game.
- Reaching in-game: The game gets as far as gameplay, but may still have major issues or fail later.
- Fully playable: A stronger claim that requires evidence about how far the game can be played and how reliably it runs.
GamesRadar reported in September 2026 that a developer update counted 12 of 55 tested games as reaching in-game, with six described as fully playable at 60 FPS. This is a dated report about that developer’s tested set—not a representative compatibility rate, a promise of full-game completion, or a performance guarantee for a particular PC or title. See the GamesRadar report for its account of the update.

Which option should you choose?
- You own a PS5 or PS4 and want to play on another screen: Remote Play is the direct option, provided your destination device and game are supported and your network is suitable.
- You want to use PlayStation Portal: It streams from a PS5; it does not replace one and does not work with PS4.
- You do not own a console: Remote Play will not meet that need. Emulation is not a guaranteed substitute; check whether your exact game is currently playable on a current emulator build and your computer.
- You care about one specific game: Verify that title’s current compatibility, not just whether an emulator can boot some games. For Remote Play, check PlayStation’s device and game restrictions.
