Then identify whether the lens is a full-frame FE lens or an APS-C E lens, and check Sony’s model-specific compatibility information for crop behavior and feature limits. Sony supports using both lens formats across E-mount APS-C and full-frame bodies, but the recorded image area and available functions can differ.
Start by checking the mount
The mount determines whether the lens is designed to attach directly to the camera. Sony E-mount lenses are designed for E-mount bodies; Sony says use with other camera types is not supported or guaranteed. Sony A-mount is a different system, so an A-mount lens is not a direct E-mount match. For an A-mount lens and E-mount body, check Sony’s A-mount and E-mount compatibility information for the exact camera, lens, and LA-EA-series adapter combination.
Identify whether the lens is FE or E
Sony’s naming guide uses FE for full-frame E-mount lenses and E for APS-C E-mount lenses. The names refer to the image format the lens is designed to cover; both are E-mount lenses. Sony’s examples include the FE 24-70 mm F2.8 GM (SEL2470GM) and E 35 mm F1.8 OSS (SEL35F18).
What happens when lens and sensor formats differ?
| Lens and camera combination | What to expect | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FE lens on an APS-C E-mount camera | The camera crops to the APS-C sensor area, using the center of the full-frame image circle. The field of view is tighter than it would be on a full-frame body at the same focal length. | Check the camera’s specifications and Sony’s lens compatibility information for any model-specific feature limitations. |
| APS-C E lens on a full-frame E-mount camera | The camera can record an APS-C/Super 35 mm area. If the camera records the full-frame area instead, image quality may suffer. | Confirm the APS-C/Super 35 mm or APS-C Size Capture setting, and whether the photo or video mode you want allows it. |
| FE lens on a full-frame E-mount camera | The lens format matches the full-frame sensor format. | Check Sony’s model-specific compatibility information for autofocus and other functions. |
| APS-C E lens on an APS-C E-mount camera | The lens format matches the APS-C sensor format. | Check Sony’s model-specific compatibility information for autofocus and other functions. |
Sony’s guidance describes the APS-C/full-frame formats as interchangeable, but that does not mean every camera feature behaves identically with every lens and body. Its compatibility material notes that settings and functions can depend on the particular combination.

Check the full-frame camera’s crop setting
If you plan to use an APS-C E lens on a full-frame body, find the relevant crop or recording-area option in the help guide for your exact camera. Sony lists different menu paths across model families, so there is no single path that applies to every Sony body. Verify that the setting is enabled or set as desired, and that the shooting configuration you intend to use permits it.
Verify function support for the exact models
A lens that mounts on the camera is not proof that every function is supported. Before relying on autofocus or another camera feature, consult Sony’s lens compatibility information and the help guide for the exact body. Sony’s broad format guidance is useful for screening combinations; its model-specific materials are the place to confirm feature behavior.

A quick compatibility check
- Find the camera’s exact model number on the body or in its menu. Use Sony’s specifications or help guide to confirm that it is an E-mount model.
- Read the lens name and model number. In Sony’s naming convention, FE indicates a full-frame E-mount lens and E indicates an APS-C E-mount lens.
- Match the formats to the sensor. Expect an FE lens on APS-C to use the smaller sensor area; expect an APS-C lens on full-frame to require APS-C/Super 35 mm crop recording for the intended image area.
- Check the camera setting and shooting mode if using an APS-C lens on a full-frame body. Follow the menu path in that model’s help guide rather than relying on a path for another camera generation.
- Check function support in Sony’s compatibility information for the exact camera and lens if autofocus or another specific feature matters.
- For an A-mount lens, check the adapter matrix for the exact A-mount lens, E-mount body, and LA-EA adapter. Do not assume direct mounting.
Choosing between FE and APS-C E lenses
Neither format is universally better. Compare the mount support, the sensor area the lens covers, the resulting field of view or crop, the image area and resolution you want on a full-frame body, and support for the camera functions you need. The lens label identifies its format, but your camera model and intended shooting mode determine how that combination behaves.
