The best way to play a trilogy on PS5 depends on the three specific games, your console model, and your region: buy compatible digital editions, use PS4 discs on a PS5 with a disc drive, or subscribe only if all three titles are currently in your local PlayStation Plus catalog. Check each game separately; an unnamed trilogy cannot be assumed to have a PS5 edition, physical bundle, upgrade, or catalog listing.
First, check all three games
Most PS4 games work on PS5, but compatibility is not universal. Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5; some titles are exceptions, and compatible games can still show errors or behave unexpectedly. Check the status of each trilogy entry in Sony’s PS5 backward compatibility guide.

For each game, confirm its PS4 or PS5 edition, disc and digital availability, included content, any PS5 upgrade terms, and—if considering a subscription—its current listing in your region and eligible plan. Catalog membership, upgrade offers, and product availability can change.

| Option | What you need | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Digital purchase | A PlayStation Store license for a compatible edition | Check whether each game is PS4, PS5, or cross-generation, and whether an upgrade or bundle costs extra. |
| PS4 game discs | A PS5 console with a disc drive and the compatible disc | The disc must remain inserted each time you play. A PS4 disc cannot be used on a PS5 Digital Edition without a drive. |
| PS4 discs with an add-on drive | A compatible PS5 Digital Edition slim or PS5 Pro, plus Sony’s add-on drive | The drive is not compatible with every Digital Edition model; check the model group and setup requirements. |
| PlayStation Plus catalog | An eligible plan and all three games currently available in your market | Catalog games can leave the service; access depends on plan, region, and current availability. |
| PS4-to-PS5 upgrade | An eligible game and its publisher’s upgrade offer | Offers vary by game and may be paid or limited. Disc owners need a drive-equipped PS5 and the disc. |
Choose digital purchases for a simple library
Sony says PS4 and cross-generation games bought through PlayStation Store appear in the buyer’s library on PS4 and PS5. A PS4 digital game can be downloaded to PS5 if it is compatible. Before buying, check which edition the listing includes and whether the trilogy is sold as a bundle; a bundle’s contents and upgrade rights are title-specific.

Digital is a straightforward choice if you want the games tied to your account rather than managing discs. It does not mean every PS4 purchase automatically becomes a PS5 edition: verify whether a PS5 version is included or offered separately. Sony’s PS4 game upgrade guide explains the general process, but the price and eligibility are set for each title.
Use PS4 discs only with a drive-equipped PS5
A compatible PS4 disc can be played on a PS5 that has a disc drive. A game may need an update, and Sony says the disc must be inserted each time you play. Sony’s compatibility guidance covers the general rules and exceptions.

If your PS5 is a Digital Edition
PS4 game discs do not work on a PS5 Digital Edition as sold without a drive. Sony sells an add-on disc drive for PS5 Digital Edition slim console model groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100, and for PS5 Pro. Its US product page says an internet connection is required to pair the drive during setup. Confirm your console’s exact model before buying or recommending it; the add-on does not fit every Digital Edition. See Sony’s disc-drive product page.

Some PS4 games offer an upgrade to a digital PS5 version; the offer may be free or paid, and availability can be limited. For a disc-based PS4 copy, Sony requires a PS5 with a disc drive: insert the game disc to redeem or use the offer, and keep it inserted to play the upgraded version. Confirm the publisher’s terms for each trilogy entry rather than assuming one game’s offer applies to the others. See Sony’s upgrade instructions.

PlayStation Plus is a practical route only if your region’s current catalog includes all three games on a plan you can use. Sony’s guide describes downloadable catalog games for Extra and Premium/Deluxe on PS5, while streaming options vary by plan and market. Catalog titles can leave the service, so check each game in the current local catalog before subscribing. The PlayStation Plus guide was published on May 23, 2022; it explains service mechanics, not current catalog inventory or pricing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the decision with a per-game checklist
- Identify the edition: Is the game sold for PS4, PS5, or both? Is a bundle available, and what does it include?
- Check your console: If you plan to use discs, confirm that your PS5 has a disc drive or that your exact model supports Sony’s add-on drive.
- Verify compatibility: For a PS4 edition, check Sony’s compatibility guidance for that title.
- Inspect upgrade terms: Confirm whether a PS5 upgrade exists, its price and eligibility, and whether a disc must stay inserted.
- Check the catalog: Search all three titles in your region’s current PlayStation Plus catalog and confirm the required tier.
- Compare total cost and access: Weigh the cost of buying the editions you want against a subscription, and decide whether physical copies or ongoing access matter more to you.
These checks distinguish a purchased digital license, disc-based access, and temporary catalog access. Because the trilogy and region are unspecified, there is no evidence-based way to rank one route as best for every reader.
