Yes—Apple documents ProRes RAW recording on iPhone 17 Pro or later, using Final Cut Camera and external storage. It is not a ProRes RAW switch in the built-in Camera app. The requirements that matter are the iPhone model, an external drive and a fast enough USB-C connection; the resulting files also need substantial storage and an editor that supports ProRes RAW.
Which iPhones can record ProRes RAW?
Apple’s current Final Cut Camera guide says: “With iPhone 17 Pro or later and an external storage device, you can record Apple ProRes RAW, which retains all the image data from the camera sensor and lets you adjust camera settings in post-production without losing quality.” Apple’s current iPhone camera guide specifically names iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro models for ProRes RAW recording.
That means the supported threshold is iPhone 17 Pro or later—not every iPhone that can record ordinary ProRes. ProRes and ProRes RAW are distinct recording formats, and Apple’s general About Apple ProRes on iPhone article covers ordinary ProRes support rather than establishing RAW support for earlier models. Its model list does not include iPhone 18, so use the current camera and Final Cut Camera guides for the latest RAW compatibility information.
What do you need to record it?
- A supported phone: iPhone 17 Pro or later, as specified in Apple’s Final Cut Camera guide.
- Final Cut Camera: this is Apple’s documented recording workflow. Apple says some third-party apps can record ProRes RAW, but the guide does not establish which specific third-party apps support which iPhone models.
- External storage: ProRes RAW recording requires an external storage device. For the external SSD workflow, Apple specifies an exFAT-formatted drive.
- A suitable USB-C data cable: the RAW-recording steps call for a cable with a minimum speed of 6 Gbit/s. Separately, Apple’s broader external-storage guidance specifies USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbit/s) or better for ProRes RAW or ProRes 4K at 120 fps. Follow the requirement for your chosen recording mode; a charging-only cable is not enough.
Apple does not validate particular SSD models in the guide. Check that a drive’s connection speed and power behavior suit your intended recording mode, and format it as required before relying on it for a shoot.

How to set up ProRes RAW in Final Cut Camera
- Connect the exFAT-formatted external storage device to the iPhone with a USB-C cable that meets the speed requirement for your recording mode.
- Open Final Cut Camera and open the recording details.
- Choose an Apple ProRes RAW codec option. Final Cut Camera selects related settings automatically.
- Check the selected resolution and frame rate, then confirm that the external drive has enough free space for the planned recording.
ProRes RAW or ProRes RAW HQ?
Final Cut Camera offers both Apple ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ. Apple describes RAW as useful when you want flexibility to adjust white balance, exposure, sharpness and other image characteristics in post-production. RAW HQ has a higher bit rate and image quality than RAW, so it requires more storage.

These are Apple Support estimates in the Final Cut Camera guide; the guide’s publication date is not shown, and the figures apply to the specified full-sensor 30 fps setting, not every resolution or frame rate. Plan for additional room beyond the estimated recording size so the drive is not filled mid-take.

How resolution and frame rate affect the choice
Apple’s guide gives a default Open Gate frame size of 4224 × 3024, with recording rates up to 60 fps. It also describes a 17:9 format at 4224 × 2240 that can allow up to 120 fps with certain lenses. Available frame rates depend on the selected resolution and lens, so do not assume every mode is available in every combination.
Higher frame rates and RAW HQ can make storage planning more demanding. Before a long recording, choose the format and frame rate that suit the edit, then check free space and connection requirements for that specific mode.

Can you edit or transfer the footage?
ProRes RAW editing depends on the target editor supporting that specific format; support for ordinary ProRes alone does not establish ProRes RAW compatibility. Apple’s general ProRes article lists Photos, iMovie, Final Cut Pro for iPad and Final Cut Pro for Mac for ProRes files, and warns that apps without ProRes support may transcode files to H.264. That general list is not an exhaustive ProRes RAW compatibility matrix, so confirm RAW support with the editor’s current documentation before building a workflow around it.
Apple’s ProRes RAW technical document describes post-decompression processing such as white balance, demosaicing, color conversion and exposure adjustment, and documents a plug-in path for camera-specific processing. The document is dated May 2023; it explains format handling, not current iPhone model compatibility.

When is ProRes RAW worth using?
Choose it when the project benefits from the extra flexibility of RAW adjustments and you can accommodate external storage, large files and a compatible editing application. For casual clips or a workflow where compact files and convenience matter more, the setup and storage overhead may outweigh that flexibility.
