For a disposable local Kubernetes cluster, use kind. To exercise a Kubernetes Service with spec.type: LoadBalancer on kind, add Cloud Provider KIND; kind alone does not provision that load balancer. If you only need a convenient host port, use kind’s extraPortMappings instead. Those approaches expose traffic differently, so choose based on what you need to test.
Choose how traffic should reach your local service
Kubernetes defines the LoadBalancer Service type, but an implementation or provider must provision or emulate the external load balancer. In a cloud environment, the provider determines how traffic is balanced. A local cluster needs its own corresponding mechanism; setting type: LoadBalancer by itself is not enough. See the Kubernetes Service documentation.
| Approach | Use it when | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| kind with Cloud Provider KIND | You want to test a LoadBalancer Service on kind. | A separate host process provisions load-balancer containers for Services. |
kind with extraPortMappings |
You need simple host access to a service, such as from a browser or local client. | Forwards a host port to a kind node; it does not implement the LoadBalancer controller contract. |
Minikube with minikube tunnel |
Your cluster is Minikube and you want to access a LoadBalancer Service. | Creates a host route to the service CIDR while the tunnel process runs. |
| MetalLB | You want to learn bare-metal-style IP allocation and announcement. | Allocates addresses from a configured pool and announces them on the network. |
The steps below use kind and Cloud Provider KIND, a practical match when local development requires a real LoadBalancer Service workflow. For a port-forwarding-only setup, skip to kind host port mappings.
Create a kind cluster
Check prerequisites
Install kind, kubectl, and a running container runtime. The kind Quick Start lists Docker, Podman, and nerdctl autodetection, and notes that Podman and nerdctl commonly run rootless and may need extra setup. Its stable-release reference at the time checked was v0.33.0; consult the Quick Start for current installation and release details. If you need a particular Kubernetes version, select a release-specific kind node image as described there.

Create and inspect the cluster
-
Create a cluster named
devand wait up to 60 seconds for it to be ready:kind create cluster --name dev --wait 60s -
Check the cluster connection and confirm the node is ready:
kubectl cluster-info --context kind-dev kubectl get nodes
kind creates container-backed Kubernetes nodes and writes kubeconfig information for kubectl. A cluster named dev is addressed with the kind-dev context. The --wait value is a timeout, not a guarantee that creation will succeed if prerequisites or runtime access are missing.
Run Cloud Provider KIND for LoadBalancer Services
Cloud Provider KIND runs on the host separately from the cluster. It needs permission to open system ports and access the container runtime, and it creates separate load-balancer containers for Services. The official kind LoadBalancer guide documents installation using Go or a released binary. Its example command is:

go install sigs.k8s.io/cloud-provider-kind@latest
@latest is a moving target. For repeatable team setup, follow the release instructions and pin a released version rather than relying on a changing latest version. Start the provider according to those instructions and leave it running while you use LoadBalancer Services.
Deploy and verify a LoadBalancer Service
The kind-maintained LoadBalancer example deploys two agnhost echo pods behind one Service. The Service listens on port 5678 and sends traffic to pod port 8080. Use the official example YAML rather than rebuilding the sample from scratch.
-
Apply the example manifest:
kubectl apply -f https://kind.sigs.k8s.io/examples/loadbalancer/usage.yaml -
Check the Service and its events:
kubectl get svc kubectl describe svc foo-service -
Read the provisioned address and send several requests:
LB_IP=$(kubectl get svc/foo-service -o=jsonpath='{.status.loadBalancer.ingress[0].ip}') curl "$LB_IP:5678"
Kubernetes publishes provisioned load-balancer information in the Service status. The two echo backends make repeated requests useful for checking that traffic reaches the Service’s pods; the example is not a performance test.

Use a locally built application image
To run an image built on your machine, load it into the kind cluster with kind load docker-image, as described in the kind Quick Start. Use a specific image tag and configure the workload’s pull policy appropriately. If an image tag is omitted or set to :latest, Kubernetes defaults the pull policy to Always, which can make the node try to pull an image instead of using the copy loaded locally.
Alternative: forward a host port with kind
If your goal is simply to reach an app from the host, configure extraPortMappings in the kind cluster configuration before creating the cluster. This forwards a host port to a kind node and is a cross-platform option that kind specifically recommends for Docker Desktop. It is port forwarding, not a LoadBalancer implementation. See kind configuration.
For a NodePort Service, the kind node’s mapped containerPort must match the Service’s nodePort. Choose this route when host connectivity matters more than testing load-balancer provisioning or status behavior.
Alternative: use Minikube’s tunnel
With Minikube, run minikube tunnel in a separate terminal while testing a LoadBalancer Service. It creates a host route to the service CIDR; the process must remain running. Without the tunnel, a Service’s external IP remains pending. The tunnel changes host routes, so network permissions and platform behavior can matter.

When the command is interrupted, routes are cleaned up. If Minikube shuts down abruptly and leaves an orphaned route, its access handbook documents minikube tunnel --cleanup.
Alternative: learn address allocation with MetalLB
MetalLB is useful when the learning goal is a bare-metal-style address allocation and announcement workflow, rather than kind’s provider-backed load-balancer containers. Installing MetalLB alone leaves its controller and speaker idle. Configure an IPAddressPool with addresses suitable for the network and clients in your setup, then configure an announcement method. For Layer 2, pair the pool with an L2Advertisement; MetalLB answers ARP requests on the local network. Start with the project’s installation and configuration documentation.
In Layer 2 mode, externalTrafficPolicy changes source-IP handling and backend eligibility. With Cluster, traffic can reach all Service pods through kube-proxy, but the original source IP is obscured. With Local, the source IP is preserved by limiting forwarding to local pods, which can leave some replicas without traffic. MetalLB explains the behavior in its usage guide.
