Then check whether the computer’s BIOS or UEFI can see the drive. If firmware cannot detect it, investigate the hardware or firmware; if it can, check Clonezilla Live’s version and the storage-controller support for your specific computer.
First identify which drive is missing
Clonezilla’s device-image workflow uses two distinct roles:
- Source or target disk: the physical disk being cloned, imaged, or restored to.
- Image repository: the storage location from which Clonezilla reads an image or to which it saves one.
Choosing a repository will not make a missing source or target disk appear. If the absent device is the image repository, reconnect it and select it through the repository workflow. Clonezilla’s general usage documentation also lists network repository options such as SSH, NFS, and Samba when those are appropriate for your setup: General Clonezilla Live usage.
Check whether BIOS or UEFI detects the drive
Restart the computer and open its BIOS or UEFI setup; the key and menu names vary by manufacturer. Look for storage, drive, or NVMe information and check whether the drive is listed. Firmware visibility is the most useful first dividing line because Clonezilla cannot detect a device that the machine itself does not expose.

If the drive is not listed in firmware
Start with the drive, connection, slot, or firmware configuration rather than Clonezilla menus. On a desktop, for example, a loose data or power cable is one possible issue. For any physical inspection, follow the computer or drive manufacturer’s instructions; the safe steps depend on the model. If the drive is still absent, consult the manufacturer or a qualified repair service.
If the drive is listed in firmware
Continue with Clonezilla Live and its storage-controller path. Firmware detection does not guarantee that a live Linux environment supports every controller configuration, but it does make a simple “drive is disconnected” explanation less likely.

Update and verify Clonezilla Live
Use a current Clonezilla Live image as a diagnostic baseline. The project’s stable downloads listing showed Live 3.3.3-37 when checked on October 4, 2026. The project’s stable changelog says that the July 24, 2026 release used Linux kernel 7.1.4-1 and fixed “no size no file system detected for bare disk with file system.” That is a version-specific fix, not proof that every missing-drive symptom has the same cause.
- Download Clonezilla Live from the official stable downloads page.
- Recreate the boot medium using the project’s USB instructions. A USB flash drive can be used to create or test boot media, but it will not fix an internal drive absent from BIOS/UEFI or an unsupported storage controller.
- Boot the new medium with the intended architecture and boot mode for the computer.
- In Clonezilla’s disk-selection workflow, allow the scan to complete and inspect the devices it lists.
Clonezilla’s restore documentation says, “Clonezilla will scan the disks on the machine in every few secs, and show you the results:” This describes the documented workflow, not a guarantee that every controller or device will be supported.

Read the device list carefully
Device names can differ between Clonezilla and the computer’s installed operating system. Where Clonezilla shows capacity or model information, use it to identify the intended disk rather than relying on a remembered name or drive letter. If the expected device remains absent after the scan, note exactly which disks appear and compare their sizes and models with the hardware you expect to see.
Do not guess when choosing a source or destination. A restore or clone operation can overwrite the destination disk, so confirm the identity of both devices before proceeding. The project’s Clonezilla Live usage documentation describes the live workflow.

When firmware sees the drive but Clonezilla does not
At this point, collect the details needed to check the specific computer and controller rather than changing storage settings at random:
- Computer make and model
- Drive type and connection, such as SATA, NVMe, or a USB adapter or enclosure
- Storage mode or controller configuration shown in firmware
- Clonezilla Live release and boot mode
- Any controller identifiers or error messages displayed by Clonezilla
Use the computer manufacturer’s documentation or support information to assess whether that controller is supported and what configuration is appropriate. The available evidence does not establish a universal VMD/RST, RAID, or AHCI setting change. Switching storage modes can affect whether the installed operating system boots, so do not disable VMD/RST or change RAID to AHCI without model-specific instructions and a plan to restore the original setting.

Clonezilla’s project site and documentation explain the supported Live workflows, but the cause of a particular detection failure depends on the computer and its storage path. No frequency estimate for these failures is established by the cited project materials.
