You can run a Spring Boot GraalVM native image on AWS Lambda by packaging the executable with an executable bootstrap script as a ZIP and using a Lambda custom runtime. That is a different deployment model from managed Java with SnapStart, which resumes environments from snapshots at published function versions. Neither option is automatically faster or simpler for every application: native images add AOT compatibility and packaging work, while SnapStart has restore-time correctness and cost considerations. Measure both with your application and workload.

How do I run a Spring Boot GraalVM native image on AWS Lambda?

A GraalVM Native Image is a platform-specific executable produced ahead of time, not a JAR that Lambda runs on a JVM. It does not need a bundled JVM, so the build target and the Lambda execution environment must be compatible. Spring Boot uses ahead-of-time (AOT) processing to prepare the application for native compilation. Because native compilation assumes a closed world of known application behavior, code that discovers classes, resources, serialization types, or proxies at runtime may require explicit hints. Some dynamic bean configuration and profile or property patterns also have limitations. See Spring’s Native Image introduction before choosing this route, especially if the application relies heavily on runtime discovery.

Build the native application

The Spring Boot native-image guide documents two build routes: Cloud Native Buildpacks using Paketo’s Java Native Image buildpack, or GraalVM Native Build Tools. With the Buildpacks route, the documented Maven command is mvn -Pnative spring-boot:build-image. For Gradle, the guide documents bootBuildImage when the native plugin is applied. The current guide says its Buildpacks route requires at least JDK 25 and Docker. Those are version-specific instructions, not universal requirements for every route or older project; check the selected Spring Boot, JDK/GraalVM, and plugin versions against the current Spring Boot native application guide.

The result you need for Lambda is a native executable built for a compatible target platform. A binary built for a different platform is not made compatible merely by placing it in a ZIP.

Package the custom runtime

Spring Cloud Function documents a Lambda custom-runtime example in which the ZIP contains the native executable and a file named bootstrap. The sample script changes into ${LAMBDA_TASK_ROOT:-.} and runs the executable. Put both files at the ZIP’s root, make bootstrap executable, and ensure the script invokes the actual executable filename. The AWS custom runtime contract requires that entrypoint and a runtime capable of processing Lambda events and returning responses; a missing or non-executable entrypoint can result in Runtime.InvalidEntrypoint. See the Spring Cloud Function AWS adapter documentation for its example packaging path.

In practical terms, this is not a Java-runtime ZIP deployment: the bootstrap is the entrypoint to a custom runtime, and the native executable must participate in the Lambda event/response flow expected by the adapter. Verify the ZIP contents, permissions, target compatibility, and invocation behavior in the intended Lambda configuration before relying on a release.

Do I need a custom runtime for GraalVM on Lambda?

For the documented Spring Cloud Function GraalVM native-image route, yes: the example uses a custom runtime with bootstrap. That route should not be confused with a managed Java runtime. Managed Java plus SnapStart is a separate option for JVM applications; SnapStart does not turn a native custom runtime into a managed Java runtime.

AWS supports SnapStart for Java 11 and later managed runtimes. It creates snapshots from initialized execution environments for published function versions; it does not apply to $LATEST or OS-only runtimes. Check the current AWS SnapStart documentation for supported runtimes and configuration details.

GraalVM native image or managed Java with SnapStart?

The right comparison is between two deployment strategies for the same workload, not between a general claim about native startup and AWS’s best-case SnapStart statement. Spring describes native images as generally starting faster and using less memory than JVM counterparts, but the amount depends on the application and environment. AWS says SnapStart can reduce initialization latency from several seconds to “as low as sub-second” in optimal scenarios. That is not a workload-matched benchmark comparing a Spring Boot native image with SnapStart.

What does the Lambda bootstrap file need to do?

It must be an executable entrypoint named exactly bootstrap, located where Lambda expects it in the deployment package. For the Spring Cloud Function example, it changes to ${LAMBDA_TASK_ROOT:-.} and starts the packaged native executable. The custom runtime then has to receive invocation events and return responses according to AWS’s runtime contract. The filename, executable permission, and successful launch all matter: a ZIP that contains the executable but lacks a valid bootstrap does not satisfy the custom runtime requirements.

Keep the script narrow: locate the task-root directory, start the binary that was packaged, and avoid silently invoking a different file or assuming a JVM is present. Validate the packaged artifact itself rather than only testing the executable outside Lambda; packaging and entrypoint mistakes can prevent the runtime from starting at all.

How should I compare startup, memory, and cost?

Benchmark both approaches with the same application behavior, architecture, Lambda memory setting, and traffic pattern. Compare cold-start distributions as well as warm invocation latency, and observe memory under representative load. Include the effects of native compilation and compatibility fixes in the engineering decision, not just the runtime measurement.

  • For the native build, verify that the executable runs on the Lambda target and that all runtime-discovered behavior has the required native-image support.
  • For SnapStart, measure behavior on published versions and validate that restored execution environments handle state and connections correctly.
  • Track configured memory and billed duration for each option. For SnapStart, include snapshot caching and restoration charges as well as standard Lambda duration charges.
  • Repeat measurements under the traffic pattern that matters to the service. A cold-start improvement may be less important if most invocations reuse warm environments, while a workload with frequent initialization may make startup more consequential.

The official sources cited here do not provide an apples-to-apples benchmark for this exact Spring Boot comparison. AWS’s optimal-scenario SnapStart latency and Spring’s general native-image characteristics are useful context, not substitutes for measurements of your function.

Which Spring optimizations are worth testing?

Before changing runtimes, inspect application initialization and Lambda configuration. Spring Cloud Function’s performance guidance identifies SnapStart, memory configuration, SDK client placement, and Spring initialization work as areas to examine. It cautions against unnecessary work in custom @PostConstruct initializers and notes that functional bean registration can be faster than @Bean-style registration in the described custom-runtime context. Treat these as candidates to test in your application, not guaranteed wins. The details are in the Spring Cloud Function AWS adapter guide.

For SnapStart, test restore-time correctness

A snapshot resumes initialized state, so initialization that would normally happen once per fresh environment may not be sufficient after restore. AWS calls out uniqueness and freshness concerns: validate that IDs and pseudorandom state do not repeat unexpectedly, secrets and temporary data are current, and network connections remain usable or are refreshed as needed. Include these checks in integration tests that exercise restored environments.

For native images, test the features that are discovered dynamically

Exercise the application paths that use reflection, resource loading, serialization, proxies, or dynamically configured beans. Failures can emerge only when a less common code path executes, so a successful native build alone does not prove that all runtime behavior is supported.
