PostgreSQL provides full-text search through tsvector, tsquery, and the @@ match operator. Hibernate ORM 6 can execute the database-specific SQL, but it does not turn that feature into Hibernate Search: PostgreSQL handles tokenization, matching, ranking, and indexing, while Hibernate maps entities and runs queries. A practical integration starts by choosing how to build and index the vector, then querying it with bound user input.
How PostgreSQL full-text search works
PostgreSQL parses source text into a tsvector, which contains normalized lexemes and their positions. A tsquery represents normalized search terms and operators. The @@ operator tests whether a vector matches a query. The selected text-search configuration determines how text is parsed and normalized, so choose it deliberately and use a stable, explicit configuration for both indexing and searching. See the PostgreSQL introduction to full-text search.
Use the query-conversion function that fits the input. to_tsquery accepts explicit query syntax; plain-text and phrase-oriented helpers are available for less structured user input. Bind user-entered text as a query parameter and pass it through the appropriate conversion function. Do not assemble query operators from unchecked strings. PostgreSQL also offers ranking and highlighting functions, allowing results to be ordered and snippets generated in the database.
Choose how to build and index the search vector
PostgreSQL supports two common designs. An expression index avoids storing a separate vector; a stored tsvector column is reusable but must stay synchronized with its source fields.

| Design | How it works | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expression index | Index an expression such as to_tsvector('english', coalesce(title, '') || ' ' || coalesce(body, '')). |
No separately persisted vector to maintain. | The query expression must match the index expression. Use a named configuration: PostgreSQL requires the two-argument text-search function in an expression index. |
| Stored vector | Store a tsvector built from the chosen source fields, then index it. |
Useful when multiple queries share the same vector representation. | Update the vector when source fields change. PostgreSQL documents triggers as one way to maintain it. |
PostgreSQL documents both text-search table designs and text-search indexes. An expression index can be compact, while a stored vector makes the search representation explicit and reusable; choose based on write complexity, reuse, storage, and the need to keep the indexed and queried expressions aligned.
Choose an index access method
Search can run without an index, but PostgreSQL notes that practical searches are usually too slow without one. GIN is the usual starting point for a regularly searched tsvector. PostgreSQL’s documentation says, “GIN indexes are the preferred text search index type.”

| Index | What to know | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| GIN | Indexes lexemes and posting lists; PostgreSQL identifies it as the preferred text-search index type. | It does not store weight labels, so weighted queries can require table-row rechecks. |
| GiST | Uses lossy signatures for text search. | Can return false candidates that PostgreSQL must recheck. Evaluate it against the workload rather than assuming it is faster or smaller. |
Neither access method has a universal performance win established here. Consider update patterns, index size and build cost, query semantics, and workload. The PostgreSQL 16 index documentation describes these access methods and their recheck behavior.
Use Hibernate ORM 6 to run PostgreSQL search
Keep the boundary clear: PostgreSQL owns tsvector, tsquery, @@, text-search configurations, ranking, highlighting, and GIN or GiST indexes. Hibernate ORM maps entities and executes SQL or HQL. For PostgreSQL-specific operators and functions, use a native SQL query or another suitable Hibernate query mapping. Make selected columns and result mappings explicit, particularly when returning ranked results or projections.

A typical SQL query compares a vector with a converted, bound search string and can select a ranking value for ordering. The exact SQL depends on whether the application uses an expression index or a stored vector and on which query-conversion function fits the input. Confirm the syntax and mappings against the deployed PostgreSQL and Hibernate ORM versions: the Hibernate documentation does not provide one universal end-to-end recipe for every ORM 6 minor release.
Where @Formula fits
Hibernate ORM’s @Formula maps a native SQL clause as a virtual, read-only value. It can expose a computed expression on an entity, but it is not a general search API, does not make a computed vector writable, and does not replace choosing and maintaining an index. Because it embeds native SQL, it may also reduce portability. See the Hibernate ORM 6.0 mapping documentation for @Formula.

PostgreSQL-native search or Hibernate Search?
These are different architectures, not interchangeable APIs. PostgreSQL-native search keeps the index and matching work in PostgreSQL. Hibernate Search is a separate full-text option using Lucene or Elasticsearch, with its own mapping and query model for indexing ORM entities in those engines.
| Choice | Where search runs | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| PostgreSQL full-text search | In PostgreSQL, using tsvector, tsquery, and database indexes. |
The search representation and workload fit PostgreSQL’s native text-search capabilities, and keeping search in the database suits the application. |
| Hibernate Search | In Lucene or Elasticsearch, using Hibernate Search’s mapping and query model. | The application specifically needs an architecture based on those search engines. |
The choice depends on where the index should live, the operational components the application will run, the integration model, and required search features. Hibernate Search annotations and APIs do not configure PostgreSQL’s native full-text feature. Consult the Hibernate Search documentation for that separate option and the Hibernate ORM 6.6 documentation for the ORM series.

Version and deployment checks
The cited PostgreSQL mechanics are documented in PostgreSQL 16 and current PostgreSQL documentation; the @Formula behavior is documented in the Hibernate ORM 6.0 guide, and Hibernate publishes a 6.6 documentation series. These references do not establish exact patch-level compatibility for every PostgreSQL and Hibernate pairing. Check the documentation for the versions actually deployed and verify the SQL, parameter binding, and result mappings in that stack.
