Clonezilla’s disk-to-disk workflow erases the selected destination drive. Back up important files first, verify which disk is the source and which is the target, and stop at both confirmation prompts until you are certain the target is the drive you intend to erase.
Before you start: protect your data and identify the drives
Make a separate backup of important data before cloning. The destination drive is not a backup while Clonezilla is writing to it: the Clonezilla project’s official disk-to-disk guide warns that all data on the selected target will be overwritten.
- Decide which physical drive contains the data you want to keep; that is the source.
- Decide which drive may be erased and receive the copy; that is the target.
- Check the drive information shown in Clonezilla against the capacities and the connections or installation you prepared. Do not identify a drive by a label such as
sdaorsdbalone; those are examples, not dependable names for a particular computer. - Make sure the Clonezilla boot media is separate from the target drive you intend to erase.
You can connect the destination internally if the computer has room, or use an external enclosure and a compatible cable. Check the computer and drive specifications before selecting hardware; the guide does not establish compatibility for particular drive sizes, form factors, or interfaces.
Clone a drive with Clonezilla step by step
- Prepare Clonezilla Live boot media, connect or install the destination drive, and boot the computer from Clonezilla Live.
- At the Clonezilla menus, choose Start Clonezilla → device-device → Beginner → disk_to_local_disk. This selects the documented beginner workflow for copying one local disk to another.
- At the source-disk list, select the drive that holds the original data. Check the displayed information and confirm it matches the source you identified before booting.
- At the target-disk list, select the drive whose contents may be erased. Check its displayed information and physical connection or installation again. Clonezilla’s guide warns that choosing the wrong target overwrites its existing data.
- Read both confirmation prompts carefully. Continue only if the selected source and target are correct and you accept erasing the target. If anything is unclear, stop rather than guessing.
- Let the cloning operation finish, then shut down before changing which drives are connected.
What happens when the target is larger?
Clonezilla’s guide describes a default that copies the source layout’s size, so a larger target can have unused space after cloning. The guide’s example uses a 20 GB source containing 8 GB of data and a 60 GB target; these figures illustrate the behavior, not a recommendation or benchmark. It documents the -k1 option to adjust the partition layout to use the larger target. If you need that behavior, consult the guide’s option details before starting; do not assume the extra capacity will be used automatically.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
After cloning: disconnect one drive before booting
When Clonezilla has finished, shut down and disconnect either the original source or the new clone before booting the operating system. The Clonezilla guide warns that the two disks have identical filesystem UUIDs after cloning; with both connected, those duplicate identifiers may confuse the operating system during boot. Once you have confirmed the clone works, reconnect drives only when you have a specific need and understand how your system will identify them.
