If your Fitbit tracker won’t sync, start with the simplest check: keep it near your phone, open the Google Health app (formerly branded as the Fitbit app), and request a manual sync. Confirm that Bluetooth and internet access are both available, then work through phone-specific checks before restarting or re-pairing the tracker.
What needs to work for a Fitbit tracker to sync?
Fitbit trackers and watches send data to the Google Health app over Bluetooth Low Energy. The phone also needs Wi-Fi or cellular internet so the app can transfer that data to your account. Bluetooth being connected by itself does not guarantee that account sync will finish. Google says a nearby Fitbit normally syncs automatically when you open the app; when it does not, its Help Center identifies a connection issue as a likely problem. Google Health Help Center: How Fitbit devices sync data.
This guide is for Bluetooth-connected trackers and watches. Fitbit Aria Air also uses Bluetooth, but Aria and Aria 2 scales use Wi-Fi, so their connection troubleshooting is different.
Try a manual sync and check both connections
- Bring the tracker close to the phone. Open the Google Health app and pull down on the Today tab or the device connection screen until the sync progress indicator appears. Google also documents a Connections → Sync option.
- Check whether sync completed. Look at the device’s “last synced when” information and see whether it changes.
- Confirm both connections. Make sure Bluetooth is on and the phone can access the internet through Wi-Fi or cellular data.
- Refresh Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth off, wait several seconds, then turn it back on and try syncing again.
Google’s instructions for manual syncing and connection checks are in its iPhone and iPad sync guide and Android sync guide.

Check for an old pairing or another nearby phone
A stale Bluetooth profile or a Fitbit paired to another phone can interfere with syncing. Google’s iPhone guidance says a device can sync with only one device at a time. If you have another nearby phone signed into the same account, follow Google’s platform-specific directions to remove the Google Health app and old pairing from that phone. Android guidance also advises removing competing pairings.
Use the instructions for your phone rather than deleting unrelated Bluetooth devices. The steps and settings differ between Android and iPhone or iPad.

Check app, permissions, and background settings
For either platform
- Force quit the Google Health app, open it again, and check for an app update.
- Confirm the phone allows the app to use Bluetooth and operate in the background.
For Android
Google notes that background-data restrictions can prevent automatic syncing. Power-saving settings and location permissions may also matter during setup. Android menu names vary by OS version and phone manufacturer, so look for the relevant app, battery, data-use, and permission settings in your phone’s Settings app. Google’s overview is How to use the Google Health app on an Android phone.
Before reinstalling on iPhone or iPad
Reinstalling the app is a later troubleshooting step, not the first one to try. Before deleting it, check that your version of iOS is still supported; an unsupported phone may not be able to reinstall the app. Google’s setup guidance covers app and device compatibility: Why you can’t set up a Fitbit device.

Restart the phone and tracker
Restart the phone and Fitbit separately, then open the app and try a manual sync again. Use the restart method for your exact Fitbit model: button combinations and cable-based procedures are not universal. Google says restarting a Fitbit does not delete fitness data.

When to contact support
If the platform-specific troubleshooting, restarts, and app-based re-pairing do not restore syncing, contact Google/Fitbit Customer Support. A factory reset is not a general first-line fix for a sync problem, so do not reset the tracker simply because Bluetooth syncing failed.
