The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 is a better flip phone in the ways you notice while it is closed: its 4.1-inch edge-to-edge FlexWindow is substantially larger, and Samsung has added DeX to the Flip line. But for Galaxy Z Flip6 owners, the upgrade case is modest. The rear-camera hardware is largely unchanged, and one independent side-by-side battery test found no endurance gain. The Flip7 is compelling if the bigger cover screen is the feature you want; it is less persuasive as a general-purpose generational upgrade.

What changed on the Galaxy Z Flip7?

Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Flip7 on July 9, 2025. Its defining change is the cover display: a 4.1-inch FlexWindow that spans the outside more fully than the Flip6’s. Samsung gives its resolution as 1048 × 948 pixels and its refresh rate as 60/120Hz. The inner display is a 6.9-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with adaptive 1–120Hz refresh; because of its rounded corners, Samsung says the viewable diagonal is 6.8 inches. Samsung’s launch announcement lists the specifications.

The phone weighs 188g. Folded, it measures 75.2 × 85.5 × 13.7mm; unfolded, 75.2 × 166.7 × 6.5mm. It remains a compact phone to carry when closed, while opening it gives you a tall, conventional smartphone screen.

Is the larger FlexWindow useful?

It is the most meaningful everyday improvement if you want to do more without unfolding the phone. A larger display gives quick interactions and camera preview more room, and the flip form still lets you use the rear cameras for selfies or prop the phone at an angle for hands-free shots.

However, display size is not the same as unrestricted app support. Android Central reports that full app use on the cover screen remains limited and may require Labs or MultiStar. Before buying, consider which specific tasks you expect to do while the phone is folded rather than assuming every app will work there just as it does on the inner screen. TechRadar reviewer Philip Berne called the cover screen a “showstopper,” but found Now Brief unhelpful in his own use; those are individual impressions, not guarantees of how the interface will suit you. Android Central’s review and TechRadar’s review discuss the cover-screen experience.

How good are the battery and performance?

The Flip7 has a 4,300mAh battery, up from the Flip6’s 4,000mAh. Samsung says the Flip7 can play video for up to 31 hours under its test conditions. That manufacturer figure is not a promise of everyday runtime: screen brightness, network conditions, apps and usage all affect how long a charge lasts. Samsung’s announcement provides the capacity and video-playback claim.

In Android Central’s two-hour, full-brightness 4K HDR streaming comparison, the Flip6 ended with 72% charge and the Flip7 with 70%. That is one reviewer’s test protocol, not a universal benchmark, but it offers no evidence of longer endurance for the newer phone in that comparison. The larger capacity alone therefore should not be read as a clear battery-life upgrade.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7, 512GB - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Model name: Galaxy Z Flip7
  • Operating system: Android 16
  • Display Size: 6.9 inches
  • Cellular technology: 5G
  • Storage Capacity: 512GB of internal storage provides ample space for apps, photos, videos, and files without worrying about running out of memory

The Flip7 switches to Samsung’s Exynos 2500, whereas the Flip6 uses a Snapdragon platform. Android Central’s reviewer found everyday performance strong but reported more heat under challenging conditions. In that review’s Geekbench 6 test, the Flip7 scored 1,849 single-core and 6,822 multi-core, compared with 2,248 and 6,940 for the Flip6. Those results reflect that review’s test conditions and software versions; they are not a guarantee of performance in every workload. Samsung’s 2026 first-quarter report identifies the Flip7 platform and software.

Are the cameras better than the Flip6’s?

Not in hardware in any substantial way. The Flip7 has a 50MP main camera and a 12MP ultrawide on the back, plus a 10MP selfie camera. Android Central describes the camera configuration as unchanged from the previous model and found no noticeable difference in direct comparisons. Tom’s Guide likewise found similar main-camera detail to the Flip6, while praising Samsung’s camera software. The phone can record up to 4K at 60fps, but it has no dedicated telephoto camera. Android Central and Tom’s Guide describe their camera findings.

The format still offers a distinctive shooting option: when the phone is folded, you can frame selfies with the higher-resolution rear cameras and use the hinge to hold the phone at a useful angle. That convenience is a benefit of the design, not evidence that the camera system itself has made a generational leap.

What about durability and software support?

Samsung lists IP48 water and dust protection. That rating is a stated protection specification, not a guarantee that a particular phone will withstand every spill, particle or drop. The hinge and foldable inner screen also make physical condition important in a way that a rating alone cannot predict.

Samsung commits to seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from global launch. It is a clear, long support commitment, but it does not establish how long an individual handset will remain in good physical condition. Samsung’s product environmental report states the support policy.

DeX also arrives on the Flip line for the first time. It adds a desktop-style mode to the phone, which may matter if you want to connect it to a larger display and use a more desktop-like interface. Samsung lists DeX among the Flip7’s platform features in its 2026 first-quarter report.

Should Flip6 owners upgrade?

For most Flip6 owners with a working phone, the decision comes down to whether the larger FlexWindow and DeX solve a real need. The Flip7 adds a useful physical change and a larger battery capacity, but camera hardware remains familiar, and Android Central’s streaming comparison did not show better endurance. That makes this an incremental upgrade rather than a clear all-round leap.

  • Consider upgrading if you specifically want the larger cover display, expect to use it often for quick tasks or camera framing, or value DeX and Samsung’s stated support window.
  • Keeping the Flip6 is reasonable if its cover screen, battery and cameras already meet your needs; the evidence here does not establish a compelling camera or endurance improvement.

Who should buy the Galaxy Z Flip7?

The Flip7 makes the most sense for someone who already wants a compact clamshell phone and values the expanded cover screen, hands-free shooting options and Samsung’s long support commitment. Its case is weaker if your top priorities are leading camera hardware, proven battery gains over the prior generation, sustained high-end performance, or unrestricted cover-screen app use.

For U.S. buyers comparing clamshells, Android Central identifies Motorola’s Razr family as the principal competition. Its reviewer describes Motorola’s cover-screen experience as more unrestricted, while Samsung’s support commitment is longer. Compare the current models around the tasks you actually use, as well as camera features, battery and thermal behavior, and support, before choosing.

“A little too late” is a judgment about the pace of progress, not a claim that Samsung missed a particular launch window. The Flip7 improves the outside of an already established foldable format, but leaves two common upgrade expectations—better cameras and clearly longer battery life—largely unanswered.
