No evidence here establishes that REST is dying or that gRPC and GraphQL are taking over industry-wide. They solve different problems: REST is an architectural style, gRPC is a remote procedure call framework, and GraphQL is a query language and runtime. Teams can choose among them—or operate more than one—according to their clients, services, and operational needs.

Is REST dead?

No. The available primary-source material does not provide comparable adoption data showing that REST is disappearing or that gRPC and GraphQL are becoming industry-wide replacements. Project documentation can establish what a technology supports and how its maintainers describe its uses; it cannot, by itself, establish market share.

REST is also more than a label for any JSON endpoint sent over HTTP. It is an architectural style associated with the Web. Roy T. Fielding’s 2017 reflections, published by Google Research, discuss REST’s history, evolution, and shortcomings while treating it as a continuing guide to understanding the Web. That broader meaning makes simple “REST versus GraphQL” comparisons imprecise: the terms describe different kinds of things.

There is direct evidence that the options can coexist. GitHub documents both REST and GraphQL APIs. That example does not measure how common coexistence is across the industry, but it shows that adopting GraphQL need not mean removing REST.

What is the difference between REST, gRPC, and GraphQL?

Approach What it is How clients interact with it What to evaluate
REST An architectural style associated with the design of the Web. Clients interact with resources and their representations through an API. Whether the resource model and representations suit the clients and whether the endpoints meet the system’s needs.
gRPC An open-source remote procedure call (RPC) framework. Services define methods; generated client and server code provides typed, method-like interfaces for remote calls. Protocol Buffers are used by default to describe interfaces and encode messages, though other formats are possible. Whether RPC and streaming patterns fit the service, and whether transport, language support, tooling, and deployment fit the environment.
GraphQL An API query language and runtime organized around a schema. Clients specify the fields they need and can traverse related objects in a query. Whether client-selected data shapes are useful, and whether resolvers, query cost, and schema ownership can be managed well.

The distinction matters: REST describes an architectural approach, gRPC provides an RPC framework, and GraphQL gives clients a way to query data through a schema. They are not three interchangeable formats for the same interface.

When should you use gRPC instead of REST?

Consider gRPC when the interaction is naturally expressed as a call to a defined service method, especially when streaming is important or services need a language-independent interface. The gRPC documentation describes use in distributed systems, mobile clients communicating with cloud services, and language-independent protocol design. Those are the project’s stated use cases, not a measurement of industry adoption.

Choose the call pattern that matches the exchange

gRPC documents four RPC patterns:

  • Unary: one request followed by one response.
  • Server streaming: one request followed by a stream of responses.
  • Client streaming: a stream of requests followed by one response.
  • Bidirectional streaming: both sides send streams of messages.

Message order is maintained within an individual stream. gRPC follows HTTP semantics over HTTP/2 while supporting full-duplex streaming; that does not make its service-method model identical to typical REST conventions.

Account for tooling and service operations

gRPC’s generated code and interface definitions can provide a structured contract, but teams should also evaluate how they inspect and operate those services. The gRPC reflection protocol can expose a server’s protobuf-defined API and referenced types to tools such as grpcurl and Postman. The project describes reflection as serving a role comparable to publishing an OpenAPI document for a REST API.

That reflection capability is an option to evaluate, not a reason to assume every gRPC service is automatically easy to explore. Consider the languages your clients and services use, the transport and deployment environment, and the tooling available to the people who build and troubleshoot the system.

Why use GraphQL if REST works?

GraphQL is useful when different clients need different combinations of fields or when a client needs to traverse related data. Instead of requiring a client to request a fixed representation, a GraphQL query specifies the fields needed for that operation. This can consolidate related data needs that might otherwise involve multiple endpoint requests.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

That flexibility is not a guaranteed performance improvement. Whether a GraphQL operation reduces network round trips—or performs well overall—depends on the server implementation and workload. A query that looks like one client operation can still require substantial work behind the API.

Plan for query cost and resolver behavior

Apollo’s overview identifies two risks teams need to address: nested queries can trigger repeated database trips, known as the N+1 problem, and deep or complex operations can consume substantial resources. These are implementation risks to manage, not evidence that GraphQL is inherently slow or insecure.

Teams using GraphQL should consider how their schema and resolvers fetch data, how they limit or control expensive queries, and how they monitor API behavior. Schema ownership and governance matter as the API and the organization using it grow.

How should you choose among them?

Start with the actual interaction and the costs your team can manage, rather than treating one approach as the successor to another.

  • Client data needs: GraphQL lets clients select fields and traverse related objects. REST can suit resource-oriented interfaces and stable, cacheable endpoints. Decide based on the representations clients need and how those needs change.
  • Service communication and streaming: gRPC’s unary and streaming RPC patterns are worth evaluating for distributed services and mobile-to-cloud communication.
  • Operational controls: GraphQL calls for attention to resolver behavior, query cost, monitoring, and schema governance. For gRPC, assess transport, language support, service tooling, and deployment needs.
  • Existing interfaces: A working REST API does not have to be replaced just because a GraphQL or gRPC use case appears. GitHub’s documentation of both REST and GraphQL APIs is one concrete example of coexistence.
  • Evidence for a migration: Do not infer a universal industry shift from a project’s feature list or examples of adopters. The sources cited here do not provide a comparable dataset for REST, gRPC, and GraphQL adoption, nor a workload-specific benchmark that establishes one as faster overall.

What does “taking over” actually mean?

It could mean that a technology is gaining adoption, replacing existing systems, or becoming a better fit for particular workloads. Those are distinct claims. The available sources explain the capabilities and intended uses of gRPC and GraphQL, and GitHub documents REST and GraphQL side by side; they do not establish a comparable industry-wide trend or show that one approach is universally superior.

The useful conclusion is narrower: API choices have different trade-offs, and a system can use multiple approaches where their strengths fit. Choose based on the interface clients need, the shape of service communication, and the operational work the team is prepared to own—not on an unproven declaration that REST is dead.
