To preserve encrypted chat history for restoration on another device, enable Secure storage separately and set up a recovery method. On messenger.com, go to Profile picture → Privacy & safety → End-to-end encrypted chats → Secure storage.
Encryption and Secure storage do different things
End-to-end encryption protects the content of personal messages and calls between the sender’s and recipient’s devices. Meta says the rollout to default encryption began in December 2023; in March 2024, it noted that chats could be upgraded at different times. A separate global “turn on encryption” step is therefore not a reliable instruction for current accounts. Meta’s rollout announcement and its Messenger encryption explainer describe that transition.
Secure storage preserves encrypted chat history so it can be restored or accessed on another device. It does not replace encryption; it is the recovery layer for encrypted history. Meta describes the content protections and storage design in its Messenger security engineering overview.
Before you turn on Secure storage
- Update Messenger and sign in to the account whose encrypted history you want to keep.
- If the history is still available on an older device, keep that device and its Messenger data intact until the new device has restored the history.
- Choose a recovery method you expect to retain access to. Meta’s explainer lists a six-digit PIN and a virtual key stored in Google Drive or iCloud. Help Center recovery material also describes a 40-character code and one-time codes in some situations; the options shown can vary by account and recovery flow. Turn on Secure storage on messenger.com
- Go to messenger.com and open your profile menu.
- Select Privacy & safety.
- Select End-to-end encrypted chats.
- Open Secure storage.
- Select Turn on secure storage and follow the prompts to choose a recovery method.
- Save the PIN, code, or account-key access details somewhere you can reach if the device is lost—not only on that device.
Meta documents this desktop route in its Secure storage settings and reset guidance. On mobile, look in Messenger’s privacy and safety settings for End-to-end encrypted chats and Secure storage. The exact tap sequence and labels may vary by app version, device, and account rollout.

Choose a recovery method you can keep using
Use the options Messenger actually presents to your account; not every method is necessarily available in every recovery flow. The practical choice is the one whose credential or linked account you can still access when you change or lose a phone.
- PIN or code: You must preserve the credential and be able to enter it during restoration. Keep a secure copy separate from the phone you might lose.
- Key in iCloud or Google Drive: Restoration depends on being able to access the linked Apple or Google account on the replacement device.
Think through what happens if the phone, the PIN or code, or access to the cloud account becomes unavailable. If the recovery method is inaccessible, Messenger may not be able to restore the encrypted history.

Restore encrypted chats on a new device
- Install or open Messenger on the new device and sign in to the same account.
- When Messenger offers to restore encrypted chat history, follow the on-screen recovery flow.
- Enter the saved PIN or use the account-key or code option offered in that flow.
Meta’s Help Center says PIN restoration requires Secure storage to be enabled. Its recovery material says a one-time code may be offered in some cases; it also advises that a forgotten PIN may need to be reset from a device where Secure storage is enabled. If you forgot your Messenger PIN or recovery fails
- Check whether another signed-in device still has access to the history; leave its Messenger data intact while you investigate.
- Look for the saved PIN, one-time code, 40-character code, or access to the Apple or Google account associated with the key, depending on what your recovery flow uses.
- If the PIN is forgotten, follow Messenger’s offered recovery or reset flow. Meta’s Help Center material indicates that a PIN reset may need to be done on a device where Secure storage is enabled.
- Do not delete Secure storage as a troubleshooting shortcut. Meta warns that deleting it permanently deletes the stored encrypted chat history and that Meta cannot restore that backup or reset the security method for you. Read Meta’s Secure storage reset warning.
What end-to-end encryption does not protect
Meta’s explanation that it cannot see or listen to content during delivery refers to the encrypted message or call content, not every aspect of a Facebook or Messenger account. Encryption does not make account-login security irrelevant, nor does it prevent someone using an already-authorized, unlocked device from viewing its contents. Account two-factor authentication is a separate protection: Meta’s security-key instructions concern Facebook account login, not Messenger Secure storage recovery. What to know about Messenger backup changes
On May 11, 2026, Meta announced a broad rollout of Labyrinth 1.1, describing improvements to encrypted backups across device loss, device changes, and long sign-in gaps. This is a service-side rollout, not a setting you can enable yourself, and the announcement does not establish that every account already has identical backup behavior.
