Start with the PS5’s automatic display settings, then enable HDR, VRR, 120 Hz output, and ALLM when your display and game support them. These options can improve the signal sent to your screen or reduce display-side processing, but they do not guarantee a game will render at its highest resolution or frame rate. Sony notes that the result depends on the entire entertainment setup: PS5 video output settings.

Recommended PS5 display settings

Setting Recommended choice What to know
Resolution Automatic The PS5 detects the TV’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution. Change it when troubleshooting or when you deliberately need a supported output such as 1440p. 4K requires a compatible screen and output configuration; Sony describes it as nearly four times the definition of 1080p HD. Sony’s resolution guide.
HDR On When Supported Unsupported games and apps remain in SDR. Always On converts SDR content to HDR output, which may not suit every display or viewer. Use Adjust HDR to calibrate brightness for your own screen; there is no universal calibration value. Sony’s HDR settings guidance.
VRR Automatic On supported TVs and games, variable refresh rate adjusts the display refresh rate in real time. Apply to Unsupported Games is optional; Sony advises turning it off if you encounter unexpected behavior. Depending on content frequency, VRR can cause slight brightness fluctuations on some BRAVIA TVs. PS5 VRR settings; Sony BRAVIA VRR guidance.
120 Hz Output Automatic Allows supported games and displays to use 120 Hz output. It does not make every game run at 120 frames per second. Turn it off if it causes video-output problems with your monitor or TV. Sony’s 120 Hz guidance.
ALLM Automatic A compatible TV can switch to low-latency mode while you play. VRR output may engage low-latency behavior even if ALLM is Off; to disable that behavior completely, disable VRR as well. The PS5 needs current system software and does not send an ALLM signal while a media app is running. Sony’s ALLM guidance.
Video Transfer Rate Automatic If the picture flickers, test -1 or -2. These settings limit some combinations of 4K, 120 Hz, and color formats, so they are troubleshooting options rather than general picture enhancements. Sony’s video transfer rate guidance.
Deep Color Output Leave at its default/Automatic setting Change only if troubleshooting a specific compatibility issue. Sony’s output settings guide.
RGB Range Leave at its default Change it only if the connected HDMI device reports the RGB range incorrectly. Sony’s RGB Range guidance.
Adjust Display Area Leave unchanged unless needed Use it only when the image is cropped or surrounded by a border. Sony’s display-area guidance.

How to set up HDR, VRR, 120 Hz, and ALLM

On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Choose the options below where available; menus or available choices can vary with the connected display and console capabilities.

  1. Set Resolution to Automatic.
  2. Set HDR to On When Supported, then select Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen calibration for your display.
  3. Set VRR to Automatic. Enable Apply to Unsupported Games only if you want to try it, and turn it off if it causes unexpected behavior.
  4. Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic and ALLM to Automatic when both are offered and supported by your TV or monitor.
  5. Leave Video Transfer Rate on Automatic unless flicker prompts you to test -1 or -2.

These settings make compatible output possible; the game and display still determine which modes actually work. For example, a 120 Hz signal option is not a promise that a particular title renders 120 frames per second.

Why an HDR picture can look washed out

HDR appearance depends on the specific display and calibration, so a single PS5 setting cannot guarantee that every screen will look right. Use On When Supported to avoid forcing HDR output for SDR games and apps, then run Adjust HDR for the screen in use. If the picture remains unexpectedly washed out, avoid changing RGB Range unless the HDMI device is reporting it incorrectly; mismatched range settings can make the image look wrong rather than improve it.

How to get 4K at 120 Hz

When 4K/120 Hz is unavailable, check the full signal path rather than assuming the console is defective. Sony recommends the HDMI cable included with the PS5 or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K/120 Hz. If your included cable is working, there is no need to replace it just because you are changing display settings.

  1. Confirm that the TV or monitor supports the desired 4K/120 Hz signal.
  2. Update the display firmware, then check the manual for which HDMI port supports the feature and whether a TV-specific HDMI format setting must be enabled.
  3. Connect the PS5 directly to that port for a test, or check whether a receiver or other intermediary supports the same signal.
  4. On the PS5, check Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and leave Resolution and Video Transfer Rate on Automatic while troubleshooting.
  5. If VRR is part of the setup, enable the display’s VRR HDMI format where applicable. Sony says HDMI port locations and available formats vary by TV model and region; the BRAVIA guidance applies to listed models BRAVIA 9, BRAVIA 8, BRAVIA 8 II, BRAVIA 7, BRAVIA 5, and A95L, not necessarily other Sony displays or brands. Check Sony’s BRAVIA HDMI and VRR guidance.

What to check before changing a setting

  • Confirm display support: 4K resolution, 120 Hz input, VRR, ALLM, HDR, compatible HDMI ports, and restrictions when features are combined are separate capabilities. An HDMI version label alone does not establish that every feature works. Check the display manual and model-specific documentation.
  • Keep troubleshooting changes targeted: use -1 or -2 Video Transfer Rate for flicker, RGB Range for an incorrect reported range, and Adjust Display Area for cropping or borders. These are not general image-quality upgrades.
  • Account for feature interactions: VRR can trigger low-latency behavior even with ALLM Off, and VRR may produce slight brightness fluctuations on some BRAVIA displays depending on content frequency.
  • Check console model limits: 8K output and Enhance PSSR Image Quality are available only on PS5 consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. 8K requires a display supporting 8K at 60 Hz with Display Stream Compression; VRR is disabled during 8K output, and Sony notes other feature limitations. Verify the console model and display documentation before expecting these options.

Sony Interactive Entertainment describes the automatic resolution behavior this way: “Your PS5® console detects your TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution.” PlayStation Support.
