For a Go REST API, the right choice depends on how much built-in help you want and whether you need standard net/http compatibility. Gin and Echo offer higher-level framework features; Chi is a composable router that keeps standard Go handler conventions; Fiber offers an Express-influenced API on a separate HTTP engine; and Go’s built-in net/http.ServeMux may be enough without a third-party dependency.

This is a fit-based shortlist, not a universal ranking. Check your Go version and integration requirements, then benchmark your own application rather than choosing from a router microbenchmark alone.

How to choose a Go REST API framework

Start with the application and team constraints, not a claim that one router is fastest. These five options offer different levels of abstraction and compatibility.

  • Built-in features: Decide whether you want request binding, response helpers, centralized error handling, and middleware conventions supplied by a framework, or prefer to assemble those pieces.
  • Handler compatibility: If you need ordinary net/http handlers and middleware, favor options that use those interfaces directly. A separate HTTP engine can make adapters and handler semantics relevant.
  • Team conventions: Consider whether your team prefers a framework-specific context or standard Go handler signatures.
  • Toolchain: Match the framework’s Go version requirements and supported release line to your project.
  • Workload: Measure the API you actually operate. Route lookup alone does not establish whole-service latency or throughput.

Top 5 options for a Go REST API

1. Gin: a higher-level framework for REST APIs

Gin is a Go HTTP framework designed for REST APIs, web applications, and microservices. Its framework context and bundled conveniences suit teams that want a familiar, more guided setup rather than wiring every layer themselves. The project links official guides and an API reference, as well as a Go.dev REST API tutorial.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose Gin when its framework conventions fit your team and you value an integrated set of web-development features. Its published routing benchmark is useful context, but should not be mistaken for a prediction of your service’s end-to-end performance.

2. Echo: framework features on net/http

Echo builds on Go’s standard net/http and adds a router, middleware, request binding, response helpers, and centralized error handling. It is a reasonable fit if you want framework conveniences while retaining a foundation in the standard HTTP package.

The Echo project identifies v5 as its latest major release as of January 18, 2026. It says v4 will continue receiving security updates and bug fixes through December 31, 2026. When choosing a version, account for that stated support timeline and the migration implications for your application.

3. Fiber: an Express-influenced API on fasthttp

Fiber takes inspiration from Express and is built around fasthttp, rather than using the standard net/http engine directly. Its route and middleware style may appeal to developers familiar with Express, but the distinct engine makes compatibility and handler semantics important selection checks. Fiber documents adapters for net/http handlers.

The Fiber repository states that v3 requires Go 1.26 or higher. Verify that requirement against your project’s toolchain before adopting that major version. The repository also notes use of unsafe, another implementation detail to weigh against your project’s compatibility and maintenance needs.

4. Chi: composable routing with standard handlers

Chi is a small, composable router that uses ordinary net/http handlers and middleware. Its project emphasizes route groups, mounting subrouters, and modular composition; its core is described as dependency-free.

Chi suits teams that want to retain standard handler signatures and compose an application from focused pieces. In exchange for that flexibility, expect to assemble more of the application’s conveniences yourself than with a batteries-included framework. The project describes its focus as an “elegant and comfortable design” for REST API servers.

5. Go’s built-in net/http.ServeMux: no third-party router required

net/http.ServeMux is part of Go’s standard library, not a third-party framework. Go 1.22 expanded its route patterns to support HTTP methods and wildcards, making the built-in mux a viable choice when its routing features and your application’s needs are sufficient. See the Go 1.22 release notes.

Choose ServeMux when you want to avoid an additional routing dependency and are comfortable providing any higher-level application features you need. A built-in router is not automatically a complete API framework: consider what your service needs for middleware, request processing, error handling, and responses.

What the published routing benchmark does—and does not—show

Gin’s project benchmark page reports a GitHub API routing test with 203 routes per operation. The figures below were measured on March 15, 2026, using Gin v1.12.0 and Go 1.25.8 on an Apple M4 Pro running macOS (Darwin 25.3.0), arm64. They are the Gin project’s reported results, not independent measurements.

Framework Reported time
Gin 9,944 ns/op
Echo 11,072 ns/op
Chi 94,376 ns/op
Fiber 109,148 ns/op

The same benchmark documentation cautions that its Fiber setup resets fasthttp.RequestCtx each iteration, adding overhead not present in the net/http tests. That difference makes direct cross-framework comparisons especially delicate. The results measure routing in that particular setup; they do not establish production throughput, complete request latency, database performance, or end-to-end application speed.

Practical selection guide

  • Pick Gin if you want a higher-level framework context and bundled conveniences for common web API work.
  • Pick Echo if you want framework features built on net/http, and can choose a release line compatible with your support and migration needs.
  • Pick Fiber if its Express-influenced style is appealing and your Go toolchain and integrations accommodate its fasthttp foundation.
  • Pick Chi if standard handlers, modular composition, and a small router matter more than having a broad set of framework features included.
  • Pick ServeMux if the standard library’s method and wildcard routing is sufficient and you prefer not to add a router dependency.

For a close decision, prototype the routes and middleware your service actually uses, verify integrations with your existing HTTP handlers, and benchmark under representative application conditions. Treat router-only figures as a narrow data point, not a final framework verdict.
