A practical design usually sends logs through CloudWatch Logs when a source or routing step requires it, then uses subscription filters to deliver selected records to Amazon S3, Data Firehose, Kinesis Data Streams, or OpenSearch Service. Some AWS services can deliver directly to S3 or Firehose instead. The right pattern depends on the source, processing and replay needs, account and Region boundaries, security, retention, and cost.
What AWS log aggregation does
Log aggregation collects records produced by separate workloads and services and makes them available through a shared storage or analysis path. Centralization helps teams investigate incidents across components, preserve records for later queries, and apply consistent access controls. It does not require every log to follow the same route: AWS sources differ in their native destinations and supported integrations.
A common architecture is to send logs from workloads into CloudWatch Logs, use subscription filters to route selected streams across accounts, and land them in a central Amazon S3 archive. From there, teams can use Athena or other analytics consumers for queries, or OpenSearch Service for search-oriented investigation. Data Firehose can manage delivery to supported destinations; Kinesis Data Streams can be added when a flexible stream, custom processing, or replay is important.
How do I centralize logs across AWS accounts?
- Inventory each source. Record which services produce logs, their native delivery options, and whether CloudWatch Logs is needed as an intermediary. Sources do not all share one ingest path. The AWS Centralized Logging with OpenSearch documentation describes distinct source flows, including delivery through S3, CloudWatch Logs with Firehose, or Kinesis Data Streams.
- Choose a central logging account and destination. A typical enterprise design uses a dedicated account for log storage and processing. AWS’s Terraform architecture pattern shows EKS, Lambda, and RDS logs moving through CloudWatch Logs and subscription filters into a logging account, where Firehose delivers them to S3.
- Configure cross-account delivery permissions. Create a destination in the central account and authorize the intended source accounts and Regions to write to it. AWS describes using an IAM role to permit source accounts and Regions to send records to the stream. Keep access to centralized production logs limited to the people and systems that need it.
- Set subscription filters for the records you need. CloudWatch Logs subscription filters route selected log data to supported destinations, including Kinesis Data Streams, Lambda, Data Firehose, and OpenSearch Service. AWS documents that subscription deliveries are base64 encoded and gzip compressed; centralized subscriptions can include account, Region, and source-log-group system fields. See CloudWatch Logs subscription filters.
- Define downstream analysis and failure handling. Attach query or search services to the archive or stream, then decide how failed records are retried, backed up, alerted on, and recovered. In documented OpenSearch workflows, failed processing records can be exported to an S3 backup bucket.
The precise trigger and processing sequence depends on the source. The OpenSearch solution documentation describes examples in which SQS or EventBridge starts downstream processing, so confirm the documented flow for each source rather than assuming one universal pipeline.

Should I use Data Firehose or Kinesis Data Streams?
| Requirement | Likely fit | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Managed delivery to a supported destination such as S3 or OpenSearch | Amazon Data Firehose | AWS says Firehose scales with produced data and supports direct connections to S3, OpenSearch, or Redshift without additional code. Confirm support for the specific source and destination. AWS subscription filter guidance. |
| Custom consumers, added processing logic, or replay | Amazon Kinesis Data Streams | Plan stream and shard sizing for traffic and account for retention and replay behavior. AWS describes the stream as a temporary intermediary that supports replay. AWS subscription filter guidance. |
| Durable central archive with later querying | Amazon S3 with Athena or another analytics consumer | The AWS enterprise pattern uses S3 and names Athena and EMR as downstream options. AWS Terraform architecture pattern. |
| Interactive search across components | Amazon OpenSearch Service | Use a source-specific ingest flow and verify Region and cross-account constraints for that source. AWS centralized logging solution. |
In short, Firehose is generally the simpler managed delivery choice when it supports the desired source and destination. Choose Kinesis Data Streams when consumers need stream-level flexibility, additional processing, or replay that a direct managed delivery path does not provide. Kinesis requires deliberate shard sizing; do not treat it as a no-configuration substitute for Firehose.
Where should I store and search AWS logs?
Use S3 for a central archive
S3 is a useful durable landing point when logs need to be retained and made available to more than one downstream analytics path. AWS’s enterprise architecture pattern routes account logs through CloudWatch Logs subscription filters and Firehose into S3, then identifies Athena, OpenSearch, and EMR as downstream options. The same archive can therefore support query-based analysis as well as search or other processing, subject to the chosen integrations and configuration.

Use Athena for queries over archived data
Athena is an option when the objective is to query records held in the S3 archive. The cited enterprise pattern identifies Athena as a downstream consumer; it does not prescribe a universal schema or query setup, so the format and organization should be designed for the workload.
Use OpenSearch for search-oriented investigation
OpenSearch Service fits workflows where users need to search and analyze logs interactively across components. AWS’s centralized logging solution uses several ingest routes depending on how each source publishes. Its supported-source list includes CloudTrail, S3 access logs, CloudFront, ALB, WAF, Lambda, VPC Flow Logs, and AWS Config. Check the solution’s source table and Region requirements before adopting it for a particular source.

Can AWS services send logs directly to S3?
Some AWS services support direct delivery to S3 or Data Firehose, while others publish through CloudWatch Logs or use a different route. Avoid adding a CloudWatch Logs hop automatically when the source can deliver directly and no CloudWatch-based filtering or routing is needed. However, AWS states CloudWatch delivery charges can still apply when a service sends logs directly to S3 or Firehose. Check the current service-specific delivery documentation and model the full pipeline rather than assuming direct delivery eliminates CloudWatch-related charges. See AWS service log delivery guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I check before deploying?
- Source compatibility: Verify each service’s supported destinations and whether CloudWatch Logs subscriptions are available for the specific log group or delivery type.
- Processing and replay: Decide whether managed delivery is enough or consumers need custom transformation, independent stream access, or replay.
- Account and Region boundaries: Confirm permissions and cross-account behavior for each source. The Centralized Logging with OpenSearch solution requires supported log outputs to be in the same Region as that solution; this is a constraint of that documented solution, not a universal rule for every AWS architecture.
- CloudFront real-time logs: The OpenSearch solution documentation notes a specific cross-account ingestion limitation for CloudFront real-time logs. Validate that flow independently rather than generalizing from other CloudFront log types.
- Security and audience: Central production logs can contain sensitive operational information. Grant access according to the intended audience and restrict cross-account write permissions to the expected sources.
- Cost and retention: Include source delivery, ingestion, processing, storage duration, and query or search destinations in estimates. Rates vary by service and Region; the AWS documentation notes that CloudWatch delivery charges may apply even for direct-to-S3 or direct-to-Firehose delivery. Check current pricing for the actual workload.
- Failure recovery: Specify retries, backup or dead-letter handling, alerts, and an owner responsible for recovery. Some documented OpenSearch flows back up failed records to S3, but production designs still need an explicit recovery process.
AWS service capabilities, quotas, pricing, and regional support can change. Validate the current documentation for the exact source, destination, and Region before implementing a production pipeline.
