It does not prescribe one concurrency model, and a program that compiles can still have logic bugs, deadlocks, or performance bottlenecks. Choose between message passing, shared state, and async work according to how your program communicates and what its workload needs.
How Rust helps make concurrent code safe
Rust’s ownership rules and type system catch many concurrency mistakes before a program runs. Its standard library offers threads, channels, synchronization primitives, and marker traits rather than forcing every program into one design. This is the foundation of the Rust book’s idea of “fearless concurrency”—not a promise that every concurrent program is automatically correct or fast. The Rust Programming Language: Fearless Concurrency
What Send and Sync mean
Sendindicates that a type’s value can be transferred safely between threads.Syncindicates that references to a value can be shared safely across threads.
These are marker traits that Rust implements automatically for types whose components meet the relevant requirements. They help the compiler determine whether a value can cross a thread boundary or be accessed from multiple threads. The Rust Programming Language: Extensible Concurrency with Send and Sync
Why Rc<T> and Arc<T> differ
Rc<T> uses a non-atomic reference count and is intended for single-threaded ownership; it cannot be sent across threads. Arc<T> uses atomic reference counting and supports shared ownership across threads when its inner type satisfies the necessary Send and Sync bounds. Those atomic operations have overhead, so Arc is useful when cross-thread shared ownership is needed, not as a universal replacement for Rc. Rust standard library: Arc<T>

Choose message passing or shared state
The main design question is whether workers should exchange owned values or access the same value. Message passing makes communication and ownership transfers explicit. Shared state is appropriate when multiple threads need access to common data, but it requires a synchronization strategy for mutation.
| Approach | How communication or access works | Typical fit | Costs and risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Channels | A sender transfers values to a receiver. | Tasks can send work or results instead of jointly mutating the same data. | Ownership flow is explicit; choose this when it suits the program’s communication pattern. The sources provide no comparative performance benchmark. |
| Shared state with a lock | Threads access common data through a synchronization primitive such as Mutex<T> or RwLock<T>. |
Several threads need access to the same value, especially when mutation is required. | Lock contention and synchronization costs are possible; inconsistent lock ordering can cause deadlock. |
| Atomic operations | Threads coordinate through atomic operations on suitable values. | Simple operations on numeric or other atomic types where the primitive matches the required update. | Choose only when the operation fits; the sources provide no general performance comparison with locks or channels. |
When channels fit
Rust’s standard-library channels let one component send a value to another, transferring ownership through the communication path. They can keep worker responsibilities distinct when a task can send its result rather than share mutable data. The Rust book repeats the slogan “Do not communicate by sharing memory; instead, share memory by communicating,” attributing it to Go documentation. Treat it as a useful design slogan, not a rule that channels are always preferable. The Rust Programming Language: Transfer Data Between Threads with Message Passing

When shared state fits
A Mutex<T> protects data so only the thread holding its lock accesses the protected value at a time. Combining Arc<Mutex<T>> lets multiple threads hold shared ownership of the mutex and serialize mutation. A read/write lock can fit access patterns with multiple readers and controlled writes; an atomic type can be more direct for a suitable simple operation. The Rust Programming Language: Shared-State Concurrency
Rust’s type guarantees do not eliminate design hazards. A program can deadlock if threads acquire multiple locks in conflicting orders. Lock contention and synchronization also have costs, while Arc adds atomic reference-counting overhead. Keep critical sections small, organize locks around actual access patterns, and measure in the target workload rather than assuming one primitive is faster. Rust standard library: Arc<T>

Async futures are not the same as threads
An async fn call produces a Future; calling it does not immediately run the function body. The future is evaluated when it is awaited or polled. Async is a concurrency programming model, while whether tasks execute in parallel depends on the executor and runtime arrangement. Async syntax alone does not create a thread. Rust Reference: async functions
Threads and async are different tools, not synonyms. The right choice depends on the work, how it waits or uses the CPU, the application’s executor or runtime, and the target operating system. The available official sources point readers to the Async Book for a fuller discussion of async-versus-thread tradeoffs, but do not establish a universal speed or memory advantage for either approach. How to choose and evaluate a design
- Map the work. Determine whether tasks mainly compute, wait on I/O, or alternate between both; identify which tasks need to communicate.
- Prefer ownership transfer when it fits. If workers can send work or results without jointly mutating data, consider channels.
- Use shared state only where needed. Choose immutable sharing, a mutex or read/write lock, or atomic operations according to how the value is accessed and updated.
- Check cross-thread bounds. Confirm the types being transferred or shared satisfy the required
SendandSyncconstraints. - Measure the application’s actual workload. Include contention and synchronization costs; do not infer performance from a primitive’s name or from async syntax alone.
There is no universally best concurrency model. Rust provides compile-time checks that rule out many unsafe thread interactions, while leaving developers responsible for choosing a sound design and checking its runtime behavior.
