On PS5, Fidelity usually prioritizes visual detail or effects, Performance usually prioritizes frame rate, and Balanced aims for a compromise. These are game-specific presets, not fixed Sony-wide standards: check the selected game’s own mode description to see what changes, including its frame-rate behavior, image clarity and effects.
What Fidelity, Performance, and Balanced mean
The labels describe a developer’s intended trade-off. They do not guarantee a particular resolution, frame rate, or graphics feature across every PS5 game.
- Fidelity: Usually favors visual detail, image quality, or effects. A game may pair that emphasis with a lower frame-rate target, but the label alone does not specify one.
- Performance: Usually favors a higher or steadier frame rate, potentially by changing image quality or other visual settings.
- Balanced: Generally aims for a middle ground, preserving more visual quality than a performance-first option while running faster than a fidelity-first one. The exact compromise varies by game.
Developers decide what each mode changes. Resolution may be native, dynamic, or reconstructed, and settings such as ray tracing may differ too. There is no universal rule that Fidelity means 4K at 30 frames per second or Performance means 1080p at 60.
How to choose a mode
Start with the game’s mode description, then weigh how you want the game to look and feel. If the game provides specific targets or explains its visual changes, use those details rather than relying on the label alone.

- Choose Performance if responsive motion and a higher or steadier frame rate matter most, subject to the game’s implementation.
- Choose Fidelity if you prefer the game’s visual detail or effects and are comfortable with its frame-rate behavior.
- Try Balanced if you want a compromise. Check what the game says it preserves or improves; Balanced does not always mean a particular frame rate.
When comparing options, look at frame-rate target or behavior, image clarity or resolution, and effects such as ray tracing. Also check whether an option is available only on PS5 Pro and whether your display supports any high-refresh feature it uses.
What changes on PS5 Pro?
PS5 Pro does not impose one standard set of modes. Developers can use its hardware to offer different combinations of visual quality, effects, and frame rate, so availability and behavior remain game-specific.

Sony describes hardware-based ray-tracing acceleration as integrated into the PS5 GPU, with developers able to use it in different ways. Its developer coverage discusses PS5 Pro enhancements to Fidelity and Performance modes, including a 60 FPS Performance mode with ray-traced ambient occlusion in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
Sony also cites a PS5 Pro “Performance Pro” option in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, combining Fidelity mode’s crisp 4K resolution and ray-tracing features with Performance mode’s 60 frames per second. These are examples from particular games, not targets guaranteed for other titles.

Do you need a 120 Hz TV?
Not for the Fidelity, Performance, or Balanced labels by themselves. PlayStation says PS5 supports 120 Hz video output for TVs and games that support 120 Hz. A compatible display can matter for a game’s supported high-refresh or intermediate-frame-rate option, but it does not make that option available in every game.
To enable 120 Hz output, use the PS5’s Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output menu. The option applies only when the connected TV and the game support the relevant output. Standard 30 or 60 FPS presets do not, simply by being called Fidelity or Performance, establish a 120 Hz requirement.

Why the game’s own description matters
Sony’s developer examples show that modes can make distinct trade-offs: one cited game offers 30 FPS Fidelity and 60 FPS Performance, while the cited Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Performance Pro mode targets 60 frames per second alongside Fidelity-like visual features. Those figures describe those examples only. For any other title—or a specific PS5 Pro mode—check the game’s official support information or patch notes for current availability and behavior.
