Review permissions in Android Settings, limit each app to the access it needs, and use a secure screen lock before adding cards to Google Wallet. These are related but separate protections: permissions control access to device features and data, while payment security also depends on your phone, Google Account, card issuer, and response if the device is lost.

Change or review an app’s permissions

To change access for a particular app, open Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions, select a permission, and choose the narrowest option that still supports the app’s purpose. For example, a map app may need location while in use; a simple flashlight app generally has no obvious need for contacts. A permission request alone does not prove an app is trustworthy or malicious—consider whether the access makes sense for the feature you use. Google’s instructions for changing app permissions cover common Android controls.

To review access by type instead, look under Settings > Security & Privacy or Settings > Privacy > Permission manager, then choose a category such as location, camera, or microphone. Exact labels and routes vary by Android version and phone maker. If a route is missing, search Settings for “Permission manager,” “camera access,” or the permission name. Android’s security and privacy settings guide describes the controls.

Choose the right level of access

  • Allow only while using the app: useful when a feature needs access only while you actively use it.
  • Ask every time: gives you a fresh choice when the app requests access, where Android offers this option.
  • Don’t allow: blocks access, but may disable or limit the related feature.

Available choices depend on the permission and device. If an app stops working after you deny access, return to its permission screen and grant access only if the feature genuinely needs it.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Use device-wide camera and microphone controls

On supported Android versions, you can turn camera or microphone access off for the device rather than changing individual apps. Find these controls in Settings or Quick Settings; their names and locations vary. A device-wide block can stop legitimate app features too, so turn access back on when you need those features.

Check which apps accessed sensitive features

Privacy Dashboard shows recent permission activity and lets you review an app’s access from a permission list. The history window is version-dependent: Google documents seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. Do not assume that your phone shows the same period if it runs another version. See Google’s Privacy Dashboard instructions.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Review unexpected camera, microphone, or location access by asking whether you used an app or a feature that explains it. If the access does not make sense, open that app’s permissions and restrict it. Dashboard history can help identify recent access, but it is not a complete independent audit of everything an app does.

Reduce risk from apps you no longer use

Google Play Protect checks apps from Google Play and other sources and can warn about, deactivate, or remove harmful apps. Google recommends keeping it enabled. Depending on Android version, Play Protect may also remove or pause permissions for apps you have not used. Review its warnings rather than ignoring them. Google explains Play Protect’s checks and controls.

Assess an app before installing it

On a Google Play app listing, check the Data safety section, the permissions the app requests, the privacy policy, and the developer information. These provide different kinds of information:

  • Data safety describes information the developer says the app collects and shares. It is a developer declaration, applies to apps distributed through Google Play, and is not an independent certification.
  • Permissions show technical access the app may request on your device. A permission does not by itself show how the app uses data.
  • Privacy policy and developer details can provide additional context about the app and its stated practices.

The disclosures and permission list can differ for legitimate reasons; neither alone is a complete audit of actual app behavior. Use them together to judge whether the requested access and stated data practices fit the app’s purpose. Google’s explanation of the Data safety section describes what it covers.

Set up Google Wallet payment verification

For contactless payments, Google Wallet requires a supported Android screen lock and a supported verification method, such as a PIN, pattern, password, or Class 3 biometric unlock. This is your phone’s screen-lock verification, not the PIN for your bank card. Google says Wallet requires verification for payment methods and may ask you to verify again after a timeout. See Google Wallet’s purchase verification guidance.

Transit has a separate setting that can allow transit payments without unlocking the phone, where the transit system supports it. That exception does not remove verification for other payments. Check the transit option and local system support before relying on it.

Check whether your phone and card are eligible

Tap to pay is not available on every Android phone, in every country, or with every card. It requires NFC, a supported country and payment method, Google Wallet as the default NFC payment app, and a device that meets Google’s security requirements. A rooted phone, custom ROM, unlocked bootloader, or uncertified software may fail those requirements. Confirm availability for your device, country, and card in Google’s tap-to-pay guidance.

When you add a card, your bank may ask you to verify it by text or email, a phone call, the bank’s app or website, or a temporary authorization shown on a statement. The bank issues any verification code; available methods depend on the issuer and region. Follow the instructions shown in Wallet or provided by your bank. Google describes card verification options.

For eligible cards, Wallet uses a virtual card number for in-store payments and some online or in-app payments, helping avoid sharing the actual card number with a merchant. Eligibility and the exact behavior vary, so do not assume this applies to every card or transaction. Details are in Google’s payment information safety guidance.

What to do if your phone is lost or a payment looks unauthorized

  1. Use Google’s device-finding controls to locate, lock, or erase the phone. Erasing it removes payment cards from that device.
  2. If you think your Google Account may be compromised, secure the account as well as the device.
  3. Contact your card issuer promptly about suspected unauthorized activity and follow its dispute process. Google Wallet Help advises reporting unauthorized activity within 120 days of the transaction date; that is Google’s guidance, not a universal legal deadline.

Google’s steps and account protections are outlined in its guidance for keeping payment information safe.
