Then check what workload triggers the heat or noise, clean only as the manufacturer permits, and use fan or power controls supported by your exact model. Persistent overheating, shutdowns, or mechanical fan noise calls for the device maker’s troubleshooting or service path—not settings copied from another PC.
1. Clear the airflow path first
Move the PC out of an enclosed cabinet or crowded space, and make sure its vents are not pressed against a wall, covered by objects, or clogged with lint. Check the placement while running the workload that causes the problem; a machine that seems fine at idle may struggle during sustained use. Intel’s NUC over-temperature guidance recommends checking for blocked vents and placing the system in a well-ventilated area.
Find out where your model draws air in and exhausts it before repositioning it or adding a stand or external fan. An accessory is useful only if it leaves the intended airflow unobstructed; the cited vendor guidance does not establish a universal benefit or compatibility for these accessories.
2. Identify what is happening—and when
Note whether the main symptom is heat, reduced performance, an unexpected shutdown, or a new fan sound. Intel lists lower reported CPU frequency, throttling, system slowness, shutdowns, and excessive fan noise as possible signs of overheating in its processor overheating troubleshooting guidance. These are reasons to investigate, not proof that overheating is the only cause.

Pay attention to sound quality. Grinding, ticking, squealing, or rattling can point to obstruction or physical fan damage rather than a fan simply responding to a heavy workload. Intel’s NUC fan-noise guidance recommends checking for obstruction and damage.
Also check whether an application is keeping the processor busy. On supported Intel NUC systems, BIOS power-management options and operating-system power settings can both affect behavior; available choices vary by model. A fan running harder during sustained CPU activity may be responding as designed, so reducing performance before identifying the workload can mask the cause rather than fix it.

3. Clean only as the maker instructs
Inspect accessible vents and fan areas for dust and lint, then consult the manual for your exact model’s cleaning procedure. Intel advises cleaning dust from fans and intake and exhaust vents; its NUC fan-noise steps specifically mention cleaning radiators with compressed air. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for access and cleaning rather than assuming that every compact PC should be opened or that components should be removed.
If the procedure for your model permits compressed air, use it only as directed. A suitably designed electronics air duster may be convenient, but the tool does not make it safe to open a case or clean internal parts contrary to the maker’s instructions.

4. Choose supported fan and power settings
If your BIOS or vendor utility offers fan presets, start with a supported automatic or balanced option. Settings and their names differ across systems, and the following examples describe documented NUC contexts rather than universal mini PC defaults.
Fan presets: trade noise against cooling
ASUS’s NUC fan-control guide describes Cool as keeping the system cooler with somewhat more fan noise, Balanced as a compromise, and Quiet as quieter but somewhat warmer. These presets are described for normal desktop use. For prolonged file transfers, stress tests, benchmarking, or sustained processor-heavy work, a different fan response may be appropriate. ASUS says long periods of processor use at 75% or higher may warrant different fan settings in its documented NUC context; that figure is not a universal overheating test or threshold for all mini PCs.

Processor power limits: do not exceed the cooling design
Intel’s NUC power-limit guidance describes BIOS choices such as Balanced, Low-Power, and Max-Performance, with options varying by model. It says sustained Package Power Limit 1 (PL1) should be set at the processor’s TDP and should not exceed the cooling solution’s limits. This is a configuration instruction, not a measured performance target. Do not copy another system’s power values: the processor, chassis, cooling hardware, and vendor implementation all matter.
In practice, a quieter setting can mean less cooling headroom, while a more aggressive fan profile can be more audible. Compare modes on your own model by considering cooling headroom, noise during your usual workload, sustained performance, and whether the BIOS and cooling solution support the setting.

5. Reset or update BIOS only with model-specific steps
For the Intel NUC over-temperature warning, Intel recommends loading BIOS defaults, trying supported Balanced or Cool fan controls, and updating to the latest BIOS for that NUC. Before resetting, record custom settings you may want to restore. Use the system maker’s instructions for the specific model and BIOS update; do not assume that a procedure for one NUC or mini PC applies to another.
6. Get help for persistent overheating or mechanical noise
Contact the device manufacturer if overheating continues after supported airflow and settings checks, if the fan does not operate, or if there is visible damage or abnormal bearing or blade noise. Intel’s processor troubleshooting steps are scoped to build-your-own systems and direct owners of OEM PCs to their computer manufacturer. Intel also advises NUC owners to contact support if the NUC continues to overheat after the listed recovery steps.
Intel says its processors have built-in thermal protection that shuts down the processor if it gets too hot. That statement is about Intel processors; it does not establish that every mini PC has identical thermal behavior or shutdown policies. There is no universal safe temperature or noise limit for compact mini PCs in the cited guidance, so use the thermal specifications for your processor and system rather than treating one temperature as safe for every model.
