Spring Boot can publish application metrics to Amazon CloudWatch through Micrometer, but the right setup depends on your Spring Cloud AWS version. For Spring Cloud AWS 4.0.2, add the CloudWatch registry and use the documented management.cloudwatch.metrics.export properties; older examples may use a different prefix. First confirm that Actuator is collecting the meter you expect, then verify the registry’s CloudWatch export configuration.
How Spring Boot metrics reach CloudWatch
Spring Boot Actuator uses Micrometer for metrics. Actuator supplies automatic instrumentation and can configure registry implementations available on the runtime classpath; Micrometer provides the meter API and backend adapters. A CloudWatch registry exports those meters to Amazon CloudWatch, which stores and serves the resulting metric time series. Spring Cloud AWS can provide the Spring Boot auto-configuration for that registry. See the Spring Boot metrics reference and the Micrometer CloudWatch guide.
Choose an integration route
| Route | Best fit | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| Spring Cloud AWS auto-configuration | A compatible Spring Cloud AWS application where Boot-managed setup is preferred | Release-specific properties such as namespace and export step; Spring Cloud AWS manages more of the registry setup |
| Direct Micrometer registry construction | A project that needs custom registry or client wiring | Construction of CloudWatchMeterRegistry, its CloudWatchConfig, Clock, and CloudWatchAsyncClient, as well as registry lifecycle |
In either case, align Spring Boot, Spring Cloud AWS, and Micrometer dependencies with the versions selected for your project. The title alone does not establish a compatible version set; use the documentation for your release train rather than assuming examples from different releases can be combined.
Configure Spring Cloud AWS 4.0.2
The Spring Cloud AWS 4.0.2 CloudWatch metrics guide specifies the io.micrometer:micrometer-registry-cloudwatch2 dependency and documents a namespace property under management.cloudwatch.metrics.export. Its documented export step default is 1m. The example namespace below is illustrative, not a required value. Consult the Spring Cloud AWS 4.0.2 reference for the exact property list for your application.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The documented enable switch is spring.cloud.aws.cloudwatch.enabled. Keep this configuration paired with the corresponding Spring Cloud AWS release; it is not a universal set of CloudWatch properties for every version.
Why property prefixes in examples differ
Micrometer’s generic CloudWatch page describes Spring Cloud AWS support with the prefix management.metrics.export.cloudwatch. Spring Cloud AWS 4.0.2 instead documents management.cloudwatch.metrics.export. Legacy Spring Cloud AWS references are also version-specific. Do not copy one prefix into a configuration intended for another release: an unrecognized property can leave the registry configured differently than expected. Compare your dependencies and configuration with the Micrometer documentation, the 4.0.2 reference, and the legacy Spring Cloud AWS reference that applies to your version.

Construct the registry directly when you need custom wiring
Micrometer documents a direct construction route using CloudWatchMeterRegistry with a CloudWatchConfig, a Clock, and a CloudWatchAsyncClient. Its sample supplies the namespace through CloudWatchConfig.namespace(); the guide also notes that you can supply a custom asynchronous client. This gives your application explicit responsibility for client and registry construction instead of delegating setup to Spring Cloud AWS auto-configuration. Follow the Micrometer CloudWatch implementation guide for the API details appropriate to the Micrometer version you use.
Check collection locally before troubleshooting export
Spring Boot documents automatic JVM and system metrics, as well as HTTP request metrics for Spring MVC and WebFlux. A commonly used web meter is http.server.requests. The Actuator metrics endpoint can tell you whether a meter is being collected before you investigate why it is not appearing in CloudWatch. The endpoint is not exposed by default, so expose it deliberately in a way that fits your operational and security requirements. Query it using Micrometer’s meter name; the backend may display a normalized name that looks different.

To register application-specific measurements, inject the Spring-managed MeterRegistry and create the appropriate meters. A MeterBinder is useful when registration depends on other beans or when you want to reuse the instrumentation.
Troubleshoot missing CloudWatch metrics
- Confirm the meter exists locally. Use the Actuator metrics endpoint to check the Micrometer meter name, such as
http.server.requests. If it is absent, investigate instrumentation and collection before CloudWatch export. - Confirm the registry dependency. For the Spring Cloud AWS 4.0.2 route, check that
io.micrometer:micrometer-registry-cloudwatch2is present and that dependency versions match the project’s selected release train. - Check the property prefix and enablement. Use the prefix documented for the precise Spring Cloud AWS version, and check its CloudWatch enable property. Do not assume the older
management.metrics.export.cloudwatchprefix is interchangeable with the 4.0.2management.cloudwatch.metrics.exportprefix. - Verify namespace and AWS runtime configuration. Confirm that the configured namespace is the one you expect, and check the AWS client, credentials, and region settings for your deployment. The integration references specify registry dependency, namespace, and enablement details, but do not define one credential configuration that applies to every SDK and runtime; use the documentation for your selected SDK and environment.
- Compare the displayed metric name with the local meter name. CloudWatch’s naming convention may normalize names, so do not conclude that export failed solely because the displayed form differs.
Choose a useful CloudWatch namespace and dimensions
AWS states that “Metrics are uniquely defined by a name, a namespace, and one or more dimensions.” A namespace groups metrics in CloudWatch, so use a stable value that distinguishes this application from unrelated publishers. Choose dimensions that help operators filter by meaningful service or deployment attributes. Keep the set of dimension values bounded as an operational practice: dimensions are part of metric identity, so uncontrolled variation can fragment related measurements. See the Amazon CloudWatch Developer Guide.
