Yes, temporarily. If clearing removes shader data the game or graphics driver would otherwise reuse, the game may need to compile those shaders again. When that work happens during gameplay, it can cause stutters. But clearing is not guaranteed to make stuttering worse: removing damaged cache files can help with certain crashes, performance problems, or visual artifacts.
Why can clearing a shader cache cause stuttering?
A shader cache keeps shader-related data so it can be reused instead of generated again. The cache might be managed by the game, the operating system, or the graphics driver; there is not necessarily one cache shared by every part of a PC.
If clearing removes data a game needs, that data may have to be compiled again. Microsoft explains that compiling shaders on a player’s device at launch—or just in time during gameplay—can mean longer loading and in-game shader-compilation stutter. The effect depends on the game, graphics API, cache that was cleared, and when compilation happens.
If the game prepares shaders during a loading screen, the noticeable cost may instead be longer loading or preparation. If it compiles a needed shader while you are playing, you may notice a hitch at that point. The available evidence does not establish a typical extra-stutter amount or a fixed time for rebuilding across games.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When might clearing the cache help?
Clearing is a reasonable troubleshooting step when there is a specific reason to suspect damaged cache data, rather than a general first response to any stutter. NVIDIA support says damaged NVIDIA Shader Cache files may cause a game or application to crash on launch, perform worse, or show visual artifacts; it also says deleted files are recreated when an app or game next launches.
That guidance concerns NVIDIA’s cache and those listed symptoms. It does not show that clearing a healthy cache fixes every kind of stutter, or that the same procedure applies to another vendor’s cache.

Should you clear it to fix stuttering?
Usually, do not clear it simply because a game stutters. First note when the hitch occurs and whether the game is compiling or preparing shaders. A hitch after a cache reset may reflect shader recompilation; stuttering can also have other causes, and the cited sources do not establish that cache clearing resolves unrelated issues such as asset streaming, CPU limits, driver problems, or frame pacing.
- If you recently cleared a cache: let the game’s shader preparation finish where it offers that option. Avoid repeatedly clearing the cache without a reason, since that can remove data the game or driver could otherwise reuse.
- If you suspect corruption: use the cache-clearing instructions for the specific game or GPU vendor and platform. Record the symptom and its timing before changing settings so you can tell whether the result changed.
- If stuttering persists: do not assume the cache is responsible. Check game-specific guidance and investigate other possible causes rather than repeatedly deleting shader data.
Why there is no universal shader-cache clearing step
Microsoft’s Direct3D 12 documentation describes several kinds of shader cache, including driver-managed and operating-system-managed caches, and notes that a particular cache kind may not exist in every implementation. Cache handling can also vary with the graphics API and driver. A folder path or deletion procedure for one vendor is therefore not a universal instruction for Windows, other GPU vendors, or consoles.

AMD, for example, describes Radeon Shader Cache as storing frequently used game shaders rather than regenerating them each time, with faster loading and reduced CPU use as intended benefits. AMD says its control defaults to “AMD optimized” and can be disabled globally. Those are AMD-specific descriptions, not settings that should be generalized to other graphics vendors.

Precompiling shaders can move some compilation out of gameplay. Microsoft describes Advanced Shader Delivery as a way to precompile shaders and deliver them with supported games on supported Windows 11 Direct3D 12 setups. Support depends on Windows, GPU and driver support, and storefront integration, so it is not a general cache-clearing remedy or a feature available in every game.
