A smart bulb that appears offline usually has a fixable connection or power problem: its wall switch may be off, its wireless signal may be weak, or a router, network, app, or setup change may have interrupted communication. Check power and whether other devices are affected first, then work through the bulb’s network and signal before resetting it. The right steps depend on the bulb’s exact model and how it connects.
1. Check whether the bulb has power—and whether the problem is broader
Make sure the fixture’s wall switch is on and stays on. Some smart bulbs need continuous power; switching the fixture off can make the bulb appear offline in its app. If the switch is controlled by a timer or another automation, check that it is not cutting power unexpectedly.
Next, see whether one bulb is offline or several devices have lost connection. If multiple Wi-Fi devices are unreachable, check the router and internet service before resetting a single bulb. TP-Link’s guidance for its smart bulbs also begins with checking that the switch is on: TP-Link Smart Bulb support.
2. Confirm how your bulb connects
“Smart bulb” does not identify a single wireless standard or setup. Depending on the model, a bulb may connect directly to Wi-Fi, use a bridge or hub, or rely on another supported smart-home network. Check the model’s manual or support page for its network requirements before changing router settings.

Some devices require the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band during setup; that is not a requirement for every bulb. Google’s general smart-device guidance also notes that access-point or client isolation can prevent local devices from communicating. Apply these checks only if they match your bulb’s setup: Google’s Seamless Setup troubleshooting.
3. Test wireless signal and interference
A bulb near the edge of reliable coverage may disconnect intermittently or respond slowly. Where practical, temporarily move the bulb or access point closer, or test the bulb in a fixture nearer the router. Consider walls, furniture, nearby electronics, and competing wireless networks that could weaken or disrupt the signal. Google’s guidance describes how wireless interference can affect connections and response times, and suggests testing placement and interference: Troubleshoot wireless interference.

If your Kasa app reports signal strength below -70 dBm, TP-Link advises moving the device closer to the router. That threshold is Kasa-specific support guidance, not a universal cutoff for smart bulbs. See TP-Link’s Kasa connection guidance.
A range extender or repeater may help if testing shows weak coverage where the bulb is installed. It will not fix a bulb that has lost power, a cloud-service outage, or an incompatible router setting, so diagnose the cause before buying one.

4. Check for recent network or software changes
If you recently changed the Wi-Fi name or password, replaced the router, or changed its settings, the bulb may need to be connected again through its manufacturer’s app. Follow the bulb’s own setup instructions; steps vary by model and network type.
Check for available updates to the app and bulb firmware. For Kasa devices, TP-Link also recommends restarting the router and device as part of troubleshooting. Google’s Nest connection guidance offers broader network troubleshooting context, but its product-specific steps should not be assumed to apply to every bulb: Troubleshoot Wi-Fi and connection issues for Nest products.

5. Reset only by following the exact model’s instructions
A reset can help when ordinary reconnection steps fail, but reset procedures are not interchangeable across brands or models. Check the manual before cycling power or pressing a reset button, and distinguish a reconnection or non-destructive reset from a factory reset that erases configuration.
For the older TP-Link LB100, LB110, and LB120 models covered by its cited Deco guide, three off/on cycles reset the bulb without losing configuration, while five cycles perform a factory reset. A factory reset means setting the bulb up again. Do not use those sequences for another model unless its instructions explicitly call for them: TP-Link Smart Bulb support.

6. Decide when to contact support or replace something
If one bulb remains unreachable after you have confirmed continuous power, checked the model’s network requirements, tested signal, addressed relevant software or router changes, and followed its reset instructions, contact the bulb’s manufacturer. A bulb fault is one possibility, but persistent disconnection alone does not prove the hardware has failed.
Buy a replacement bulb only when the evidence points to a fault with that bulb. Add a coverage accessory only when weak signal is the diagnosed cause. Neither is a general remedy for power interruptions, cloud outages, or incompatible settings. TP-Link’s Kasa guidance describes connection troubleshooting and signal checks: What should I do if my Kasa device keeps losing connection or going Offline?
