It complements rather than replaces a conventional station survey: station measurements establish a connected route through the cave, while a scan records detailed geometry around the scanner. The right method depends on the cave, the detail needed, and how the resulting data will be controlled and processed.
What cave LiDAR captures—and what it does not
LiDAR, short for light detection and ranging, measures distances to surfaces and combines those measurements into a point cloud: a dense set of three-dimensional points. In cave work, ground-based systems are often described as terrestrial laser scanning, or TLS. A point cloud can preserve passage shape in more detail than a simplified plan or centerline map, but it is not automatically a connected cave survey or a finished map.
Conventional cave surveying measures a route from station to station. Teams record direction with a compass, distance with a tape or laser range finder, and passage slope with an inclinometer; those observations can be assembled into a connected map. A range finder measures an individual survey leg—it does not produce a LiDAR point cloud. As Mammoth Cave National Park explains, “lasers cannot bend around corners,” so measurements are collected from station to station. Mammoth Cave National Park’s cave-mapping overview describes this approach.
The two products answer different questions. A station survey helps establish where passages go and how they connect. LiDAR records the surrounding surfaces visible from scan positions. A project may need one, the other, or both.

Which 3D method fits the cave?
| Method | How it works | Best suited to | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) | A tripod-mounted scanner collects many range measurements from fixed positions. | Detailed geometry and surface documentation where the team can set up and cover the areas of interest. | Often requires multiple scan positions; scans must be registered into a shared coordinate frame and processed. |
| Mobile LiDAR / SLAM | A handheld or portable system scans as the operator moves; software estimates the device’s path and orientation. | Continuous capture through passages where stopping to set up a tripod at each position is impractical. | Trajectory estimation can accumulate drift. Preserve survey control and check registration when location accuracy matters. |
| Close-range photogrammetry | Overlapping photographs are used to build a 3D model. | Projects that need image texture and detailed visual context where lighting and image overlap are sufficient. | Capture quality depends on lighting and usable image coverage; it serves different completeness and detail goals than laser scanning. |
| Hybrid capture | LiDAR geometry is combined with imagery or photogrammetry. | Work that needs measurable shape as well as visual information for interpretation. | The datasets still need to be aligned and handled as part of the processing workflow. |
A 2020 comparison of TLS, a SLAM-based portable instrument and a commercial camera for natural cave surveys illustrates that these systems can serve different acquisition and representation goals; it does not establish one universal winner. The CNR repository paper describes that comparison. A 2016 review of cave TLS discusses its sensors, methods and applications. Oludare and Pradhan’s review provides broader context.
What teams use cave scans for
Documenting passage shape
A scan can show ceilings, wall profiles, shelves, niches and other complex surfaces that a centerline map may simplify or omit. This richer geometry can support cave morphology work, documentation and interpretation. For archaeology and heritage projects, surfaces beyond the floor may matter when human use or artifacts relate to walls or ceilings; that is a reason to consider 3D capture, not a requirement for every archaeological survey.

Monitoring sensitive areas
Repeat scans can provide a basis for comparing a sensitive area over time. The National Park Service says LiDAR or time-of-flight laser scanning can be used to monitor high-value cave resources and identify change. It notes that precision near one millimeter is possible depending on the setup; that is a qualified possibility, not a typical or guaranteed result for every scanner, cave or survey. Fine precision also does not ensure that every subtle visitor impact will be detectable. The NPS guidance on geological monitoring of caves and associated landscapes explains the use and limits of monitoring.
Supporting geological interpretation
Laser-scan intensity may help with lithological interpretation, but it is affected by acquisition geometry, surface microtopography and atmospheric conditions. A Gouffre Georges case study proposed corrections for those influences; its findings are site- and method-specific, not a universal calibration recipe. The 2022 study in the University of Bologna repository describes the case.

Mapping while moving
Mobile systems can capture passage geometry without external positioning infrastructure, which can be useful underground. That does not make position and connection to other surveys automatic. A conventional survey framework may still be needed to tie the scan to dependable locations or existing cave maps. The National Speleological Society journal paper on three-dimensional mobile cave mapping describes a portable approach.
How a cave LiDAR survey is carried out
- Define the deliverable. Decide whether the project needs a connected route, cross-sections, detailed surface geometry, a visual model, or repeat change detection. A point cloud alone may not answer every one of those needs.
- Choose the capture method. Consider passage dimensions, bends, occluded surfaces, safe setup locations, access, required detail and field constraints. Static TLS uses fixed scan positions; mobile systems capture while moving; imagery can add visual texture where conditions allow.
- Plan coverage and control. Identify where scanners can be placed or carried and how overlapping scans will be aligned. For mobile mapping, plan how to validate the estimated trajectory against survey control if positional accuracy matters. Keep station-survey ties where the map must connect to a broader coordinate frame or existing survey.
- Capture the data. Collect scans from enough positions to see the surfaces that matter. Bends, narrow passages, fissures, low ceilings and other occlusions can leave gaps if a scanner cannot see around or reach them.
- Register and process. Align scan positions into a consistent coordinate frame, clean and interpret the point cloud, and assess whether the coverage suits the intended use. Processing may include substantial storage, computing, software and specialist effort.
- Create and validate the deliverable. Convert the point cloud into the needed map, model, sections or comparison. Check that the result is registered and complete enough for its intended use; retain the underlying control and survey context where dependable location is important.
Practical limits underground
- Access and visibility: Tight bends, low passages, fissures, occlusion and restricted setup locations can make it difficult to capture all relevant surfaces. Wet or reflective surfaces and fragile formations may also constrain deployment depending on the equipment and site.
- Field burden: The NPS notes that scanners can be relatively large, heavy and delicate, and may depend on substantial batteries or electrical power. Cost and personnel demands can also be significant.
- Registration and drift: Fixed scans need alignment; mobile systems depend on trajectory estimates that can drift. Neither a dense point cloud nor a visually convincing model proves that its coordinates are correct.
- Data workload: Large point clouds take storage and processing. Teams need suitable software, computing resources and expertise to turn raw scans into a useful and checked product.
- Environmental fit: Lighting affects photogrammetry; moisture, surface characteristics and atmospheric conditions can affect capture or interpretation. Suitability should be assessed for the cave and instrument, rather than assumed across all sites.

- Field burden: Can the team support the equipment’s weight, power needs, staffing and time underground?
- Processing capacity: Are the storage, software, compute and expertise available for point-cloud handling?
- Environmental fit: Will illumination, moisture, surface properties or fragile formations affect the method?
Phone-based depth scanning is a separate category from professional TLS and handheld mobile systems. A 2026 article compares smartphone LiDAR for cave mapping with a FARO Focus3D S120, but that comparison does not show that a particular phone or app is best or appropriate for every cave. The article in Geology Today addresses that specific comparison. Likewise, a 2017 proceedings paper documents the Caveatron as an integrated cave-survey and LiDAR instrument, but does not establish its current availability. The Caveatron paper describes the device.
