You can add layers to an apartment’s security without drilling, but start by checking the locks and latches already installed. Report missing or broken hardware to your landlord or property manager, then consider only removable devices that fit your door or window, comply with your lease and building rules, and leave a safe exit.

Start with the hardware already in the apartment

Inspect the main entry door, its latch and deadbolt, the strike area, accessible windows, and any patio or sliding door. Check that each existing lock operates as intended, and note missing parts or defects. Report problems promptly to the landlord or property manager, preferably in writing, and keep a copy of the request. Ask which temporary additions are allowed before attaching or placing anything.

Use the installed locks consistently. A portable device should not become a substitute for repairing a broken or absent required lock. Tenant duties and a landlord’s repair obligations depend on local law, the lease, and the type of dwelling.

Local requirements are not universal

For example, Texas Property Code Chapter 92 addresses residential security devices, including exterior-door locks, window latches, sliding-door security bars, and other devices. Section 92.153 lists devices required in covered dwellings, subject to exceptions, and the chapter also addresses installation, repair, and replacement responsibilities. These provisions apply in Texas; they do not establish requirements elsewhere. Read the Texas Property Code Chapter 92 and consult local tenant guidance for your situation.

In England, Approved Document Q concerns security of doors and windows against physical attack in new dwellings and parts of buildings providing access to flats. It is building-regulation guidance, not a general statement of renter rights, and it does not establish rules for other UK nations or countries. See the UK government’s Approved Document Q.

Choose a removable device for the specific opening

No-drill devices are not interchangeable. Before buying one, check how it engages the door or window, whether it is intended for use only while you are inside, how it is removed, and whether it could obstruct an exit. The cited sources do not provide controlled comparisons proving that one style resists forced entry better than another.

Option What it does Check before using it
Portable interior door lock Engages part of the door and frame to add a temporary layer from inside. Confirm it is compatible with the door’s construction and latch arrangement, is used as directed, and can be removed quickly for exit.
Door or security bar Braces against a door or opening; designs differ in where and how they brace. Match the bar to the door, floor, or track it relies on, and make sure it does not trap occupants or block emergency egress.
Sliding-door track bar Occupies part of a sliding door’s track to limit movement. Check track dimensions, opening direction, and fit; do not assume a bar suits every patio door.
Window security bar Restrains a window opening when fitted for that window. Verify compatibility with the frame and opening style, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and preserve a usable emergency exit where applicable.
Door-stop or contact alarm Alerts occupants when a door or window is disturbed, depending on the device. Treat it as an alert, not a lock or reinforcement. Check placement and whether the sound or notification will be useful to you.

For an entry door

A portable interior lock or a correctly fitted door bar may be an option while you are home. These products engage doors in different ways, so check the exact door and follow the product’s directions rather than assuming a device advertised for renters will fit. Do not use a device that makes a quick exit difficult.

For a sliding patio door or accessible window

A track bar or window bar may suit some openings, but dimensions, frame styles, and opening directions vary. ABUS describes its FPR217 as a square-profile window security bar that installs without drilling into the frame and says it suits almost all common window types. That is the manufacturer’s product description, not independent confirmation for every window or proof of forced-entry performance. Check the specific window and the ABUS FPR217 instructions and product information before relying on it.

If you want an alert

A door-stop alarm or removable contact alarm can provide awareness, but an alarm signals; it does not physically secure a latch, door, or frame. A renter-focused guide discusses portable locks, bars, and alarms as no-drill possibilities, while warning against altering building hardware or interfering with exits. Treat that as general editorial advice rather than a legal rule or a product test: Rent Certain’s renter-focused guide.

Check permission and keep exits usable

“Removable” does not automatically mean permitted or risk-free. A device may mark a surface, conflict with a lease or building rule, alter building hardware, or interfere with emergency egress. Check your lease and ask building management before attaching or changing anything. If you are uncertain whether a device affects fire safety, ask management or consult local fire-safety guidance; requirements vary by building and jurisdiction.

  1. Inspect the door, windows, and patio entry; record any missing or inoperable hardware.
  2. Report defects to the landlord or property manager and ask what temporary additions are allowed.
  3. Use functioning installed locks consistently while repair requests are addressed.
  4. Match any removable device to the exact opening and install or position it as directed.
  5. Check that occupants can still exit quickly and that the device does not obstruct an emergency route.
