You can use a co-branded credit card for UPI payments in Google Pay only if it is a supported RuPay credit card and its issuer enables RuPay credit-card UPI. Add it through Google Pay’s RuPay-card setup—not the regular credit-card flow—then use its UPI PIN to pay participating merchants. Co-branding alone does not make a card eligible.

Check that your card is eligible

Google Pay’s feature is for RuPay credit cards whose issuing bank supports linking them to UPI. Check both the card’s network and card-specific support with the issuer. If the bank or card is missing from Google Pay’s list, ask the issuer whether that particular RuPay card can be used on UPI.

Your Google Pay phone number must match the mobile number registered with the card. Verification requires outgoing SMS service. Google says Aadhaar verification is available only for some issuing banks; if offered, the mobile number linked to Aadhaar must also match the number registered to the card. See Google’s RuPay card setup guidance.

Co-branded cards can come in different networks

A co-branded product’s name or partnership does not establish UPI eligibility. Google says Flex by Google Pay is offered with Axis Bank and SBI Card on both RuPay and Visa networks, while its help page specifies that UPI QR payments are for the RuPay version only. Check the network on your own card and confirm issuer support; do not assume a Visa version—or another co-branded card—is eligible. Google’s Flex information describes that product.

Do not confuse UPI linking with adding a regular card

Google Pay also supports adding ordinary credit cards for tokenized card payments, a separate feature with different uses. For RuPay credit-card UPI, use the specific Add RuPay credit card option. Google’s general card instructions describe the regular card flow; they do not replace RuPay UPI setup.

Add the RuPay card and set its UPI PIN

  1. Open Google Pay and tap your profile picture.
  2. Choose Add RuPay credit card.
  3. Select the card-issuing bank and the eligible RuPay card.
  4. Complete the on-screen verification. Use the mobile number registered with the card, keep outgoing SMS enabled, and select the matching SIM if prompted. If Aadhaar verification is offered, its linked mobile number must match the card’s registered number.
  5. Follow the prompts to create a UPI PIN for the card, or enter the existing UPI PIN associated with it.

Google’s setup instructions cover linking and verification. The UPI PIN for the card can be different from the ordinary credit-card PIN.

Pay a merchant with the linked card

  1. At checkout, choose the RuPay credit card linked to Google Pay, or scan a merchant’s UPI QR code and select the card as the payment method.
  2. Enter the UPI PIN for that card to authorize the payment.

Google says the card can be used for online merchant payments and payments to merchant business accounts reached through a UPI QR scan. The linked UPI address is intended for merchant checkout: person-to-person attempts fail. See Google’s guidance on using RuPay credit cards.

Know what is excluded, and check acceptance and charges

  • Not for paying people: You cannot use this card to pay friends or family or receive money from them.
  • Not for self-transfers or investing: Google says the card cannot be used to move money from the RuPay card to a savings account or to invest in the stock market.
  • Merchant acceptance can vary: Some merchants may not accept RuPay credit-card payments. Choose another payment method if the card is unavailable or declined.
  • Limits are issuer-controlled: Google says the issuer considers the approved credit limit, its UPI risk-management limits and any limit you set in the bank’s mobile banking app. Google’s guidance does not establish one universal transaction cap.
  • A merchant fee may apply: Google says some merchants may charge a small processing fee inclusive of GST, paid directly to the merchant. It does not say this applies to every payment, so check the checkout screen and merchant terms.

These restrictions and payment conditions are described in Google’s RuPay payment guidance.

Troubleshoot setup or a declined payment

  • The bank or card does not appear: The issuer may not support RuPay credit-card UPI for that card. Confirm eligibility with the issuer rather than assuming any RuPay card will work.
  • Card verification fails: Check that the card details are correct, the registered mobile number matches the number in Google Pay, outgoing SMS works, and the correct SIM is selected. If Aadhaar verification is unavailable, Google advises contacting the issuer.
  • A merchant payment is declined: Confirm the merchant accepts RuPay credit cards, that the payment is a merchant transaction, and that you have not reached an issuer-set or bank-app UPI limit.
  • The PIN is rejected: Enter the UPI PIN created or used for the RuPay card; do not assume it is the card’s ATM or credit-card PIN.

For current steps and issuer-dependent options, consult Google’s setup help and payment help.

If you are choosing between co-branded cards

Compare the card’s network, issuer-confirmed UPI support, annual and transaction fees, issuer-controlled UPI limits and the card’s rewards. Google’s help pages do not provide an issuer-by-issuer comparison or a basis for ranking individual cards; verify current terms with each issuer.

This guidance covers Google Pay in India. Google’s help pages checked on October 4, 2026, do not display publication dates, and issuer support, app steps, limits and fees can change.
