A DIY seven-segment display can be built by wiring the LED segments directly to a controller or by using a display driver. For a multi-digit Arduino project, a MAX7219-based module is a practical route: the MAX7219 is designed for common-cathode displays, scans up to eight digits, and handles refresh for you. The right pinout, current-limiting components, and supply depend on the specific display and circuit, so check the component datasheets before connecting power.
How a seven-segment display works
A seven-segment display forms numerals by illuminating combinations of seven LED bars, typically labeled a through g. Many packages also include a decimal-point LED. The display’s wiring depends in part on how its LEDs share a connection: common-anode and common-cathode parts have different electrical arrangements and are not interchangeable in every driver circuit.
Choose a build approach
| Approach | Best suited to | Controller and refresh work | Display compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct GPIO wiring | Learning segment mapping or controlling a simple display with a suitable circuit | Uses controller pins for the segments; a multi-digit multiplexed design needs ongoing refresh logic. | Determine the pinout and electrical requirements from the selected display’s datasheet and the controller’s limits. |
| MAX7219 driver or module | A multi-digit numeric display where simpler controller wiring and automatic scanning are priorities | The driver uses a serial interface and handles multiplex scanning and refresh; it supports up to eight digits. | The MAX7219 is specified for common-cathode displays. Verify the module labels and the display’s specifications. |
Direct wiring for hands-on control
Driving segments directly gives you control over how each bar is addressed and is useful for learning the display’s segment map. If you use multiplexing to control multiple digits with fewer controller pins, the controller must repeatedly refresh the digits. The circuit must also suit the display and controller; there is no universal resistor value or pin assignment that can safely be applied to every part.
Use a MAX7219 to simplify a multi-digit build
Analog Devices describes the MAX7219/MAX7221 as serial-interface drivers for common-cathode seven-segment numeric displays, with multiplex scanning, segment and digit drivers, a BCD code-B decoder, and storage for digit data. Those built-in functions reduce the low-level display-driving work compared with implementing scanning yourself. The MAX7219 specification covers displays of up to eight digits; check your module and display documentation to confirm they match. Analog Devices MAX7219 product documentation

Build a four-digit Arduino example
An Arduino Project Hub tutorial published March 9, 2021, uses an Arduino Nano, a four-digit display, and a MAX7219/MAX7221 driver. Its example counts from 0 to 9999, making it a useful reference for a basic multi-digit project’s structure and code. Treat it as an example, not a substitute for checking the parts you have: match its wiring to your board and display documentation. Arduino Project Hub four-digit MAX7219 tutorial
Check compatibility before wiring
- Identify the display. Find its exact part number, pinout, common-anode or common-cathode arrangement, and electrical limits in its datasheet.
- Match the driver. If using a MAX7219, confirm the display is common-cathode and check the module’s actual pin labels and documentation.
- Plan current limiting and power. Select components and a supply based on the display and controller specifications; do not assume values from a generic diagram apply to your parts.
- Choose how digits are refreshed. With direct multiplexing, implement ongoing refresh. With a MAX7219, the driver handles scanning internally.
- Test the example against your hardware. Use a project tutorial for code and organization, then verify every connection against your own board and display documentation before powering the circuit.
Why exact part documentation matters
Seven-segment displays differ in pin assignment and electrical requirements, while controllers and driver modules have their own limits. The available specifications establish the MAX7219’s common-cathode compatibility and digit capacity, but they do not provide one universal bare-display circuit. Use the datasheet for the display you selected alongside the documentation for your controller or driver to determine the correct wiring and supply design.
